Fri 15 May
Forgot to charge my Apple watch yesterday with the early morning for the conference and it died around 5 am, but thankfully was able to be fully recharged. Conference was quite good, especially the video of the Ishpeming family that lost their son to suicide, "Do It for Daniel". Also really liked listening to Dr. Chris Carr, Packer team psychologist. Heading up to Door County this morning for a week, including Ridges programming.

Had a surprise visit from Axel last night. I had missed the text he sent on Thursday to say he was coming, so when he texted at 1:30 to say he'd be here around 7:00, it was a surprise. He had rented a car to take a friend to Chicago early on Tuesday, so he thought he'd use the opportunity to come and see us. We grilled chicken after he arrived and visited a bit before heading to bed. He hadn't been sure if he would stay over or drive back that night, but he was very tired so he decided to sleep and get up around 3 am to be back in time to pick up his friend in Madison at 6:30. I woke up just before 4 am to use the bathroom, and I saw a light in his room and his car was still here. I had to work to get a response from him as he had laid back down for "5 more minutes" and was out like a light. I roused him and sent him on his way.

It's Mothers Day! Bob bought me a beautiful alpaca sweater from the Cultural Fest a couple of weeks ago, Michael texted sweet greetings yesterday (he couldn't remember if Mother's Day was Saturday or Sunday), and Hobbes texted her greetings this morning. We will go up to Era Pancake House for brunch later, after I bake some banana bread muffins for Leone to take over this afternoon.

Hot water heater died yesterday, and conveniently when Bob had a day free and could bring Michael to help purchase and install a new one and haul the old one away. The last one lasted 16 years, so if this one is similar, it will make it to our mid 80s. Michael smashed his elbow carrying one of them on the stairs, but it seemed to get better with that wonderful stuff I bought from the Monday market guy in Spain, as well as immediate ice and a mom kiss. He'll be sore for a couple days though.

Very much enjoyed the Judy Collins concert last night at the Grand. Eventful night: the watch woke me up around 11:30 three times to let me know I had an important message, and it seemes it was just referring to a text from Lisa to thank me for the gift card and coming to her dinner. Took a bit to get back to sleep after being rudely awakened. Toward morning, thought my congestion had broken to a runny nose, and it turned out to be a bloody nose. Watch also said my temperature was high in the night.

Home again, home again! Good to be back safely and in familiar surroundings. Weight was up, so I'll have to be attentive to limiting excess eating and be more diligent with exercise again. Good Friday. Planning to go to church at noon today, even though we don't sing. Holy Thursday service went well. Roads weren't too bad, though the trees were still iced over and most every block along the route had large and small branches down. A big branch of one of Robert's trees hit the side of our garage, but Bob doesn't think it did any damage.

Walked to the indoor Farmer's Market this morning and loaded up on fresh-baked pastries. Also a dozen eggs and some chocolate sugar cookies. In a couple of hours, we will march with the No Kings rally with our newly-made signs. Mine says: GOVERNMENT Of the People, by the people, for the people, ALL the people." Bob's says: "Votes for all" with No Kings symbols. Planning to go to church tonight so we have tomorrow free if either Laura or Axel gets back to us regarding a visit. They have Spring Break this week, so might either or both be headed elsewhere for some R&R.

Had a really nice day yesterday. Drove over to Appleton in the afternoon and did a little Costco. Found a few things to take to St Martin as well as replenishing our AA batteries (which was the original errand). Got some new pastries to try. Topped it off with wine and dinner at Mondo by the River, and bought 3 bottles of Juan Gil to bring home. Saw Crystal from the winery and spent some time chatting with her.

Happy Birthday, Bob! For his birthday, even more snow and the wind moved around that which had been cleared. I am going to try to walk to Franciscans to help supervise the shelter option for our homeless folks. Joanne and Jane were going to be there at 6:30 am, but I'm just not that good a soul so I'm shooting for 9 am. I figure if any of the early folks then need to leave, I can relieve them. I'm hoping more reinforcements will come at noon when they would normally open, but I suppose it depends if they can get there. Not so sure how I'll do walking in this wind and deep snow.

The winter storm is here. Quite a bit of snow down already, I'd estimate 8-9 inches based on the porch railing which usually doesn't get blown too much. I heard sleet when I first woke up. Visibility isn't great. Supposed to continue all day into Monday.

Today we are heading down to Madison to lunch with Laura and get our errands done. Going to sit with Leone this morning while Mick goes to pick up his new car! He is leasing, I believe from a place in Wausau. He was already able to sell his old car for parts for $400 and get it out of the way yesterday, so he's ready to go. His friend, Jeff, is taking him up to get the new wheels. This will be my first visit with Leone since returning from Spain. Mick said she had a little fall yesterday, but was checked out by the hospice nurse and seems okay, if a little sore. Won't get to gym, but since Nichol is gone and they're offering Hard Core Strength, I wouldn't have gone anyway.

It will be very nice to get a new furnace and have the house comfortably heated again. We are most fortunate that the gas fireplace is so effective in throwing out heat, and also that the temperatures are supposed to moderate quite a bit this week.

March already. Belt's opens on Friday, Daylight Savings time returns next Sunday. The year marches on. The furnace has pretty much died, only blows the fan to circulate what heat is thrown off by the fireplace and occasionally the space heaters. The bathroom was chilly this morning and the hot water from the shower gave off clouds of steam.
Coldest Night of the Year was a resounding success last night. We earned over $35,000 for One Big Tent.

Home again, home again, riggety jig. Spain was again a wonderful experience, even though it was very windy much of the time which limited our hikes somewhat. There were weather advisories for the wind, and branches/trees down in some of the venues. We did visit the Gil Bros winery in Jumilla for a wonderful day where we met three women traveling together from Appleton. We all went to a Michelin-starred restaurant in Jumilla for lunch afterward and it was a real treat, not too badly priced. Also visited the Archaelogical Museum in Alicante and had a tour of an exhibit on the history of Denia.
Back to Body Pump this morning - should be envigorating. The cold is hard to reacclimate, but we'll manage.

My Apple watch decided I should get up and move every hour after I went to the bathroom at 2:30. Did not make for a restful night after that. Today I need to remember to go to HSP to collect hats and other items made for the OBT folks by the Prayer Shawl group. I'll have to drop them off on Wed morning since we are closing OBT on Monday due to the extreme cold in the forecast (windchills should be really nasty), and the fact that it's MLK day and the Salvation Army staff will not be in house and would have to make a special trip to let us in.

I am annoyed. Bob asked me to pick him up when he dropped off his car for service, but I do not believe he ever said it was at a different location than the last two times I did this recently. I waited a long time outside the Nissan dealership, texted him twice with no response, and finally gave up and drove home. En route, I got a call from him saying he was waiting at Check's and had seen me drive by. Now I will not have time for breakfast before Body Pump. I am annoyed.
Finally sitting down to breakfast at 10:17.

Finally got our Apple watches around 5 pm yesterday. I had trouble setting mine up and Bob figured out that I didn't have my phone updated so it took a bit of time to download and update the phone first. All set up now and getting used to new procedures. The size of the watch didn't bother me at all which was a pleasant surprise. I found a watch face that gives me easy access to the information I want, at least at this point. It needs to be charged every day, but I find it easier if it gets to be habit.

Got my lab draw done this morning so I'll see if the Citrus Bergamot is doing anything to help control cholesterol. Should get our Apple watches today; kind of excited to try a new device and say bye-bye Fitbit.

Social Justice committee meeting at 6:30 tonight. I think I missed the last one because I wasn't feeling well and there may have been some breaks over the holidays, so it feels like it's been a long time since I attended one. Otherwise, my day is free to start planning my packing a bit more for Spain. I will contact the wine rep who promised to put us in touch with the winery in Spain for a possible tasting.

Had a lovely time visiting with the daughter yesterday, and got our Madison errands done as well. Her thoughtful Christmas gifts to us were little care packages of multiple Lush products in sizes we can take to Spain if we like, though at least the face mask I will use here where I can keep it on while I soak in the hot tub at night.

Both Bob and I ordered new Apple watches yesterday; have decided to ditch Fitbit as it isn't working as well as it used to. They sold out to Google who has effectively ruined it, probably because they prefer to sell their high-end smart watches. Had a good time at the choir party at Sharon's last night. Bob and I were the stars of the word game. I had a long chat with Fr. Steve, but it was better than I would have expected. Sharon put out a huge spread of food and refreshments.

Dusting of snow out there, not too cold at this point. Choir sings for Mass tonight, then party at Sharon's house with lots of food and the Packers/Bears playoff game. Two weeks from today, we get on a plane to Spain.

Already 9 days into the new year, how quickly it passes! Not going to gym for the video today, and will evaluate whether to do Pilates mat again since I was so wiped after last time. Looks like the rain continued a bit last night, and it's above freezing this morning, so hopefully not iced over.

Back to Bootstrap after several weeks off with the holidays. Board meeting for OBT tonight at Trinity. Did my whole Pilates mat yesterday but felt pretty wiped out for the rest of the day.

Not going to gym today as Nichol canceled and it is just the video, and the pavement outside is shiny with ice. I'll just stay in and try to do a Pilates mat for a change. Maybe get to taking down some of the Christmas decorations.

Taylor's birthday! Hope she has a good one. I have Spanish group today, and it has been long enough since I last attended (since I skipped the previous one), that I am sort of looking forward to it. I just need not to commit too often.

Needed two doses of ibuprofen last night between hip discomfort and restlessness. Will go to the Winter Market this morning for eggs since I'm down to only two. Had to throw out the really old cartons as the eggs had started to solidify, and had to send Bob to the grocery store for a dozen for the frittata for Hartmans. Cantor at 5 pm tonight.

Happy New Year! Hard to believe it's been 26 years since Y2K and all the frou-frou about the new millenium. Hartmans are coming for brunch this morning, so I need to get cracking soon to get things prepared. I have the baked French toast trays ready to go into the oven, but I need to prepare a frittata and Nueske bacon. And prepare the table. Should be doable.
