Samedi 27 Juin

The clouds thinned a bit during breakfast with mountain peaks revealed on spots of sun, but clouds moved back by the time we left. They didn't look as threatening of rain at least. We finished breakfast before our friends came down, but lingered over coffee for a bit.

As we walked today, the views were interesting because of the way the clouds alternately obscured and revealed different panoramas. We decided to wuss out and take the Telecabine lift, cutting out shot 1 1/4 hours of straight climbing. The weather was sufficiently iffy that we thought a shorter day might be better. There was still plenty of steep climb left when we disembarked from the lift. After cresting the first peak, there was a very brief descent, then a sharp, steep peak. That was a hairy climb with sharp drops off either side. It was necessary to use hands to grab onto rocks or trees at times. A little vertigo at times, too.

We found a funky little country place for lunch after trekking through trails filled with cow poop. We were able to get light lunches of vegetable soup with cheese and raw ham or salad Savoyarde.

Toward the end of the day, we missed a turn. I thought we caught up at the next section, but it was not the same one described in the notes. By the time we were sure we were off track, we had to backtrack a long way. We tried a couple of other incorrect alternatives and ended up getting in about two hours later than I had expected. So much for a short day. Good thing we took the lift!

Food:

8:00 am. Small croissant, small pastry, jam, blackberry yogurt, chocolate muesli with milk, 6 ounces orange juice, coffee, small banana

1:30 pm. Bowl vegetable soup, 2-3 oz abondance cheese, 2 oz raw ham, 33 cl peach iced tea

7:30 pm. 6 oz sparkling rose, tabouleh salad, shot glass pureed melon soup with mint, veal osso bucco, 1/2 cup tagliatelle pasta, green beans, apple tart

2:00 pm. 1 cup vegetable soup, 2-3 oz cheese, 2 oz raw ham, 33 cl peach iced tea

7:30 pm. 6 oz sparkling rose, small piece crusty bread, tabouleh, melon soup in shot glass, osso bucco, tagliatelle, small zucchini half with cheese

Dimanche 28 Juin

A lovely sunny morning. Awkward start to the day when Bob broke some crockery cereal bowls; a bowl stuck to the one he picked up then detached and fell on the stack below. I fear we haven't made a very good impression at this hotel. Dad accidentally forgot to turn back the key from the last hotel so we had to ask the hotelier here to help return it; she was appalled that we had taken it. They also knew we had gotten lost en route due to the hour of our arrival.

Well, we had good intentions. The hotelier told us last night that church would be at 9:30 am today. We left in plenty of time to walk there but there was no one there. A woman was cutting fragrant flowers from a tree nearby. She told us the Mass here was yesterday evening. There would be Mass in an hour in Abondance, the town we walk to tomorrow. She even offered us a ride as she was going there anyway, but we would have to walk back. Dad was wearing dress shoes that have no support and neither of us had used sunscreen. We had to settle for visiting the church, saying a few quiet prayers, and lighting another candle for Grandma.

We came back to change into more comfortable city walking clothes and to slather ok the sunscreen. We walked back through the town, taking photos. I bought a small brioche roll to munch while walking. There were several restaurants open, bit we have been eating so much that a big lunch didn't even sound good. We finally returned to a small bakery/mini- market and bought apricots, pastries, and peach iced tea to eat at the little table outside. It was the perfect lunch.

We are back at the hotel for a short rest before a short afternoon hike.

Food:

8:00 am. Med/large croissant, jam, large slice cheese, thin slice sausage, 1/2 cup plain yogurt with jam, Bosc pear, 6 oz orange juice, coffee

Mercredi 24 Juin

Our "stay-put" day at Lac de Montriond. After breakfast, we walked to Morzine for the market. The first part of our walk retraced the end of the previous day back to the village of
Montriond. From there, we found the way across to Morzine, a total of about 5 km. The weather was beautiful and warm. The market was wonderful, a combination of vendors of cheese, meats, vegetables and fruits, clothing, and other assorted merchandise. We bought some things for ourselves, some gifts, and some bread and cheese for picnic the next day. Then we found our way to the main part of town. I had to check out the supermarket, then we found a little cafe where we had crepes with emmental and local jam which they referred to as raw. It was delicious! The walk back was very enjoyable in the warm sun. When we reached Montriond village, we decided to stop at the bar for a small beer. We drank it on the sunny terrace which we had to ourselves. They had nifty plastic chairs with backs that leaned in a semi-reclining position, so I stretched out in the sun and woke up about 45 minutes later!

When we returned, there was time for a sunny strolll around the lake. We stopped on the terrace of the hotel at the far end for an iced tea. After dinner, we strolled around the lake in the opposite direction. There were more slugs out in the evening,

Food:

8:30 am. Small sweet bread, small chunk crusty bread, strawberry jam, 6 ounces orange juice, large cup hot chocolate, small bowl cornflakes, milk, coffee

1:00 pm. Crepe, 3-4 small slices emmental cheese, 3-4 pieces raw ham, 12 ounces mango iced tea

7:30 pm. White wine, crayfish on bed of spinach cooked in butter, trout cooked in butter, 2 small turned potatoes, peas in stock, raspberry tart

5:00 pm. 12 ounces mango iced tea

7:30 pm. Large portion crayfish on a bed of spinach cooked in butter, trout cooked in butter, au gratin potatoes, vegetable, 3 pieces local cheeses, creme brûlée, white wine, espresso, small square dark chocolate

Vendredi 26 Juin

I guess nice weather couldn't be expected to last forever. We had a heavy rain last night that stopped by breakfast time. We decided to do the half-day walk into Switzerland with Sue and David. A ways out of town, on a steep climb, the heavy rains returned. We got to test the efficacy of our waterproofs. By the time we neared the Swiss town of Morgins, it finally let up. We found a nice restaurant in town and tried cheese fondue and rosti. It was a bit pricey but delicious. On the walk back, we had some lighter rain on and off. Our "half day" took from about 10 am tim 6 pm.

Food:

8:30 am. Small croissant, orange marmalade, small pastry, nutella, 6 ounces orange juice, coffee, 6 ounces peach yogurt, soft-boiled egg, small banana

1:15 pm. Small square rosti, cheese fondue with bread cubes, 12 ounces beer

3:00 pm. 4 squares Swiss milk chocolate

7:30 pm. Kir royals cocktail, red wine, wild mushroom spinach tart, duck leg, green beans, small baked potato, small sundae with sliced bananas, caramel sauce, espresso, small square dark chocolate

Jeudi 25 Juin

Great hiking day. More beautiful warm weather. We met up with the other Headwaters couple, David and Sue from England, about halfway through the day and walked together to the end. I think it was less tiring to share conversation with new folks. We hiked to the smaller benchmark on the biggest mountain. To go all the way up would have taken another couple of hours and brought us in to our destination quite late.

Food:

8:00 am. Small croissant, 4" pc crusty bread, blueberry jam, 1 tbl butter, 6 ounces plain yogurt, 6 ounces orange juice, of cup hot chocolate, very small bowl corn flakes, milk

2:00 pm. 2 chunks brioche with dried fruit, 4-5 thin slices venison sausage with hazelnuts, 2 ounces goat cheese, chocolate pudding cup

6:00 pm. Pint beer

7:30 pm. Glass red wine, large salad with bacon and emmental cheese shreds, tomato wedges, slice crusty bread, 5 oz steak, 4-5 large homemade fries, green beans, lemon sorbet with vodka

Can't believe we're finally going to leave home later today to go to France. One thing about planning and anticipating a trip for so far in advance is that it takes on a sort of unreality. You live the trip so virtually, it seems inconceivable that it will ever be real. I think I'm excited.

Cleaning off a good workspace on the counter was less difficult than I had anticipated. Dad said he'd work on the fridge today. I'll do my best to leave the house liveable for you - and I apologize for whatever doesn't get done.

I seem to be more than usually hungry today. Maybe because yesterday I was stressed and not too interested in food. I did, however, make sure I got food in me yesterday, so I wish my body wouldn't try to compensate so for hunger.

Another graduation party to attend, however briefly. Fun.

Got an email back from United saying that Travelocity should change our reservations at no cost because they screwed up. I will call them today, but I'm not holding out much hope. There is an outside chance that they might move us to an earlier flight Sunday that would change our arrangements. I'll let you know as soon as I know anything. If they book us on a morning flight, we may ask about crashing at your place Saturday night and driving to Chicago together in the morning.

Working with a supervisor from Travelocity; waiting for a callback as he checks with the airlines. He believes we can check our bags through from Chicago and is checking to see why United would have informed me otherwise. If we don't have to collect our bags, transport them, and check them in again at Kennedy, I think the time window should be adequate. Hope he's right.

Confirmation email came through. The whole change thing has just wiped me out though. Running on fumes. Got first load of laundry in, rest ready to go. No longer have a full day left to prepare as I had planned. Hope my brain restarts soon so I don't forget anything important.

Michael's 18th birthday! He stayed up til midnight to usher it in.

Hopefully Grandma is all set now that she has her medication. I'm sure you'll all do well together; just remember to keep in touch with her as I know she's feeling bad that you will be so far away soon.

We had a very delightful meal at @1800, the remodeled The Restaurant, for Michael's birthday. They had offered a 2-for-1 $25 gift certificate sale on the radio so it was a tad more affordable for a high-end restaurant. The food was exquisite and the service impeccable. Michael really enjoyed himself, as did we all.

Didn't sleep too well last night. Suffering some anxiety of my own between hoping I can get Grandma settled down so she doesn't suffer too much or make things difficult for you and Michael and a little anxiety about this iffy flight transfer time in NYC. If all goes right on schedule, the transfer ought to be doable, but so much is out of our control. I feel like the massage last night was wasted, given that the anxiety persists. Hopefully it will dissipate as I realize how unproductive it is.

I got Grandma all medicated for you. She has anti-dizziness/nausea medication that she had to go on when she got sick right before we were all supposed to drive out to Oregon, and anti-anxiety medication that I want her to take regularly at least til we get back. Hope this calms her down.

So is Janelle a Richmond person? And I like the idea of the Meet poster, but the first one should be Meet Hobbes. Janelle sounds like a fun person to be around, whether she knows it or not.

In 2 more days, my baby turns 18 - his golden birthday, no less. Wish you could be here to celebrate with us.

Mosquitos decided to do a large-scale taste test on my left calf. I have about 8-9 bites on the calf altogether - delightful. And now they're really starting to swell up so my leg looks lumpy and distorted.

We will try to throw the large red cooler in the back of the car soon so we don't forget.

Is your "Snoring" drawing Waiting for Dumbledore?

Now I'm a little concerned about our flights. I just got an email response from United indicating that not only do we need to secure our own transportation between LaGuardia and JFK, we will not be able to check our baggage straight through from Chicago. This means we have 2 hrs 25 min between flights to collect our baggage at LGA, secure a tax to JFK, check in again at JFK and get to our gate. The United representative did not think we had adequate time and recommended we try to fly standby on an earlier flight. There is a United flight from ORD to LGA leaving at 1:01 and arriving at 4:19 that would give us another hour. I have emailed back to ask how we could switch to this flight without substantial cost to us. Travelocity was singularly unhelpful when I called them as the original booking agent. They said they didn't get an email from the airline saying the transfer time was invalid, therefore we should have enough time.

Just had a very nice massage - feel all relaxed and mushy.

Grandma was so worried while she was laying on the floor that she would spoil our trip. I'm sure she'll be equally worried about burdening you and Michael. Hopefully this little tumble gave her a wake-up call to be more careful. We moved the little exercise bike back out of the way yesterday so she has less floor obstacles to trip over, and we've had a "discussion" about balancing on one foot to put on and take off clothing when her balance is compromised. Just think, someday you may have to have those little "discussions" with me - yikes!

Sun 14 Jun

Eventful morning - Leone called while I was eating breakfast to say she had been trying to call Grandma all morning with no answer. I figured it was probably her phone, but I showered early and went over to check. She answered my knock and told me to use the key to get in. She was lying on the kitchen floor and had been there all night; she fell and couldn't get up. I really can't conceive of being so out of touch with your body mechanics that you couldn't get yourself up somehow, but she said she had tried many things unsuccessfully. She had crawled from the living room to the kitchen hoping she could reach the phone, but when she couldn't, she lay on the hard floor all night. We had been to Fazoli's with her after the Suzuki concert. She had fallen shortly thereafter when she went to close her windows in the living room.

She is fine, though a little sore. She couldn't get up with my assistance only, so I had to go and get the guy who helps in the kitchen. He suggested we also bring the nurse so he went and got her. We were able to get her up with them pulling on her arms and me lifting her shoulders from behind, and once she was up, she was fine. She was mentally clear and able to move around. The nurse thought I should still take her to the ER to get checked out. She was able to move around to change her clothes and she walked to the car as usual. A little stiff turning sideways to get in. They checked her blood, urine, and a chest xray and she's fine. She was recommended to have her urine rechecked midweek as there was microscopic blood in the urine, but he really didn't think it was a big thing. We were discharged and back at Oakridge in time for lunch. She's enjoying telling her story to all her comrades. She said she didn't sleep at all on the floor so she was quite tired and promised me she would lay down in her bed for awhile.

As to your packing day food suggestions, it sounds great. I can feel the cholesterol already! And Ginza hibachi is always a good choice. Nice to end with one of your favorites.

Had a nice long walk on a beautiful evening to cap off the day, followed by freshly baked rhubarb coffee cake with good vanilla ice cream.

Wow, trip countdown is getting so close as to feel realistic. Gotta get some packing/planning solidified this weekend.

To confirm the schedule:
Sun 21 Jun: Bob and Sue leave Stevens Point around 5:30 am
Pick up Laura in Madison around 7:30 am, eat good brunch either in Madison (Pancake House?) or en route
Laura drop Bob and Sue at O'Hare by 11:00 am
Flight leaves Chicago O'Hare at 2:00 pm
Laura brings Matrix back to Madison/Stevens Point (your choice)

It will be good to have an idea when you plan to come up to Point so I can let Grandma and Michael know what to expect.

Sun 28 Jul Laura and Michael pick Grandma up around 9:50 am to go to church at Newman. Take her to County Market
after Mass if she needs groceries, and take her for a meal to wherever you all choose

Thurs 2 Jul Laura and Michael drive Matrix to O'Hare to pick up parental units (allow about 5 hrs travel time plus any stops)
Flight arrives at O'hare at 7:46 pm
LeGault family drives Matrix back to Madison and crashes at Laura's apartment

Fri 3 Jul LeGault family plus Keaton pack up Laura's things into UHaul which Laura has procured. Possible meal together at
Jade Garden?
Bob, Sue, and Michael return to Stevens Point when all is packed
Laura and Keaton depart in UHaul for Richmond, VA

Please let me know if you have additions or corrections for the schedule.

We thought about the truck thing and thought not. If you leave us the key for the apartment, we'll come back at a later date before Aug 15 to pick up any left-behinds. Unless that won't work....

I take it Jenna won't be physically in the apartment any more after you leave? We could drive down on July 11th easily enough. Will Jenna be physically in Madison to turn in the keys? Maybe we could leave them in the apartment after our last run and she (or the landlord) could collect them there? How much stuff do you expect to be there to haul home?

Just was confirmed as a Facebook friend of Masa! He showed up as someone I might know with his name in Chinese characters.

Running late this morning; spent many frustrating minutes restringing the hoodie. At least it's done.

Michael and his girlfriend Steph hiked with us at RIb; we tried a new trail that turned out to be quite a bit shorter but beautiful. Then we went to Great Dane and got seated almost immediately but waited a ridiculously long time for our food to come. The manager came and apologized and offered us free desserts. Then when the food finally came, it was cold. When the manager came to inquire, we told her that the food was cold so she still gave us the free desserts but did not charge us at all for the meal.

Tried unsuccessfully to download another copy of our trip notes so we could print them from the computer rather than pay copy store prices to photocopy the thick packet. I couldn't determine which number/code they wanted to identify our specific trip package, or I may not have been entering my name exactly as they wanted it. Bottom line, I gave up and emailed the lady at Breakaway Adventures at 9:30 last night, and I had the requested information before 7:30 this morning. I continue to be impressed with their service.

Found an old video Hips and Thighs of Steel 2000 that had somehow migrated upstairs by Michael's video game stack. Did it this morning and remembered that it is a real thigh-killer. Lots of lunges and squats as well as other thigh exercises. It will make a good addition to the repertoire.

Hiking at Rib on the agenda for tonight for those overworked thighs. Hope they're back to shape by then.

I agree that the ballet woman has a weird port de bras. I used to be really frustrated with her bent elbows til I just stopped watching her arms. She also isn't consistent with arms to second or fifth from one side to the next. But I still find the routine to be consistently good and helpful in sculpting lower body, even over time.

Neither Dad nor I are sure about the rugs, so we'll have to scout about for them. I expect they're around somewhere.

Glad you were able to modify the arms to work for you. I find doing the workout once a week enough to notice the results.

I don't like being cold again so soon. Wish I had time to hop in the hot tub but I'm Eucharist coordinator today so we have to get to church early. Guess the coffee will have to warm me up.

Not too sore from the walk today. Managed to do ballet with not much more difficulty than usual. Funny how that DVD remains challenging even when I manage to do it every week. Not sure if I'll get up really early the morning we leave to sneak it in. I'll decide closer to the time.

St. Joe's chicken dinner and two graduation parties on the agenda this afternoon/evening. Whoa! Partied out.

Oh, I feel wonderful! I slept 11.25 hours last night for the first time in who knows how long! Bound to be good for recovering from my cold.

The clouds are rolling in, so it looks like the weather forecast may be unfortunately accurate for Walk Wisconsin, but at least Dad and I will be better geared out to accommodate the weather than most folks. I'm actually looking forward to seeing if our consistent hill training will serve us in good stead for 13.2 miles on the Green Circle.

Walk Wisconsin conquered, soggy though it was. Felt mighty good to slide into the hot tub to get warm again. My feet appear to have come through it unscathed this year - good boots and socks, hooray! Dad weathered it well also. He's soaking in the hot tub now. I feel good about the prospect of the hike now, knowing we handled today well. Granted the hike will be on significantly different terrain with less oxygen, but we'll also take our time much moreso, with longer breaks. I never had my backpack off my back today. I would slip it off to rest my shoulders on breaks on the hikes.

Hoping your brain is kinder today and you're not being so hard on yourself. Love you!

Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to an evening with nothing on the schedule beyond picking up the registration for Walk Wisconsin. Maybe I'll even watch a movie.

Why couldn't we have today's weather tomorrow for Walk Wisconsin - sunny, low 70s, beautiful breezes. Tomorrow when we walk, it's forecast to be low to mid-fifties and rainy. Delightful. Whine, whine.

We checked in the attic and there were two suitcases that will be fine for the trip. Dad was so sure there was only one, but I won't have need of the purple one anyway.

25th wedding anniversary!!!

It was really hard to get up this morning, but I made myself do it anyway. Did the Cardio Soul DVD which turned out to be a good choice as it was energetic and sufficiently unfamiliar that I had to pay attention. Nose is still runny but I feel fine. I expect there may be treats at work today as a well-liked psychiatrist who left Portage County a year or two ago is returning today.

Mon 1 Jun

Hope you have managed to get all your work done, get some rest, and that your schedule this morning goes off without a hitch. Hope your travels are safe and as relaxing as possible, and your visit to Richmond is successful in finding the perfect apartment at a reasonable cost. How's that for hoping for perfection?

BTW, your red plaid flannel top and green fuzzy capris must have fallen out of your laundry basket. They were neatly folded on the futon this morning. I put them in the bag with your left-behind clothes from last time. If you need them before we next see you, let me know and I'll figure something out.

I am feeling a little better coldwise, though still coughing and nose blowing somewhat. Hoping that I'm on the mend. We ate at Majarajah at about 7 pm before we left Madison yesterday. We ran a lot of errands - Trader Joe's, REI, Target, Old Navy, Woodman's. Busy day, didn't get home til about 10:30 pm so I didn't get much sleep before my exercise time this morning.

Hiked Rib with Barb this evening. Either she adjusted her pace or I was feeling better as I didn't feel like I was slowing her down today.
