The exercise instructor at the resort (who was from New Jersey) was really working with me to work in parallel instead of turnout position for most exercises as she said it is a much more natural alignment of the body. I have been trying to incorporate this into my workouts at home where possible and be more mindful of my alignment. She said the parallel position, especially with the pelvis dropped, is much easier on the lower back. You can actually feel the difference immediately. Breaking old habits can be difficult, though.
