Getting tired of gray days already. I sometimes forget how spoiled we were this winter with the tons of sunshine, though I know I did appreciate it as it happened.
Making our monthly stock-up trip to Madison today. Will be strange not to have you there to spend some time together. Hope we can arrange something relatively soon, though I understand you have an extremely busy schedule. Love ya!
Good day but got exhausted from shopping. Did the marathon of Penzey's, (lunch at Porta Alba), Target, TJ's, bakery, Costco, Brennan's and Woodman's. Needed a few things from each place, so by the time we settled down for dinner I drank a ton of water to rehydrate and it felt awesome to relax. Got home around 8:45 pm.

Hope you have a good time at your con in Appleton this weekend. Let the season begin!
My scale is down a bit, finally under 140 for the first time in many months. I do realize it may be a result of the intestinal issues, but the first weigh-in after vacation on Monday was still above 140 so it has been during this week of (mostly) getting better that it has started to fall. I am hopeful that this is the start of a body response to cutting back on sugar and increasing the intensity of my exercises. This week I have been back to lower intensity because of an overall lack of energy, but I did a somewhat more intensive one today.
Food:
6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 149 g strawberries, coffee
11:45 am Blueberry soy shake, hot cross bun, large orange
4:30 pm 11 TJ's wine crackers
6:45 pm 6 oz Naughty Girl red wine, 8 oz bay scallops, 8 oz asparagus, 1 c whole wheat spaghetti, 2 tsp olive oil, 1 tbl lemon juice, 12 oz skim milk

I was really exhausted by about mid-day yesterday. Made it through the afternoon at work, took a brief nap when I got home. Dad suggested half-price sushi night at Tokyo which was easy enough to digest and work-free, then I came home and crawled in bed at 6:45 pm. It was a good choice as I feel more energetic today. Still not quite back to normal, but okay.

Enjoyed the movie last night. It stayed pretty true to the book. I didn't think some of the casting was great, at least it didn't work for me. President Snow played his part well but his look was too wise and benevolent for the character. Most of the characters were a little off of my visualization, but the movie still worked.
Feeling a little guilty for doing a shorter workout this morning. I have been returning to some of the older workouts, not quite as fast-paced, while my body returns slowly to normal. Couldn't quite motivate to look for a short cardio to add to the weights.
Feeling a little woozy today. Darn.

Yay! I was able to get up and complete my exercises this morning, maybe not at full energy level, but I made it! And I was diarrhea-free this morning so far. My tummy is not really rumbling yet after breakfast either. Let's hope....
So far, so good. I've had rumbles and some mild diarrhea, but minor. Hopefully I'm on the mend.
My butt is peeling. Kind of puts a different spin on Brand New Butt.
Made homemade pork chops w/dressing today - old time comfort food for a tummy that has now agreed to eat.

Well, I took my last dose of Cipro this morning and it doesn't appear to have done anything. I'm not having frequent bouts, but I still feel rumbles whenever I eat and I still have some issues, especially at bedtime or in the mornings. I'm beginning to wonder if it's some kind of intestinal parasite. I didn't eat any unwashed fruit but I did get saltwater in my mouth when snorkeling, though I'm pretty sure I didn't swallow any. I'll have to give Paul Munck a call tomorrow if there's no further improvement. The most frustrating thing is that I didn't feel it was a good idea to get up to exercise with a rumbling tummy and I really wanted to!
Our choir director frustrates me. He is very poor at clearly directing his rhythm, then yells at the choir for not following him. On the sustained notes when it is easiest to check in for the beat, he likes to just hold both hands still to draw out the beat. He also changes tempos frequently but doesn't clearly demarcate. Aaaagh!
Any ideas yet what you'd like for your birthday? Grandma also needs ideas.
Food:
8:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 145 g strawberries
11:45 am 2 eggs, 1 pc bacon, 2 pancakes, 1 tbl whipped butter, 1 tbl syrup, coffee
7:00 pm Filet O'Fish, 6 baby carrots, 12 oz Gatorade Perform (for electrolytes lost), 4 oz Activia prune yogurt

Back in the saddle again. Got home about 12:30 am and promptly crashed. Had a lovely time in Jamaica, except for contracting traveler's diarrhea on Wed morning which did not completely subside for the remainder of the trip. Put a damper on eating Jamaican food and participating in the activities I had planned. We went out snorkeling on Monday and spent three hours without realizing it. I was toast when I finally crawled out of the water, both literally and figuratively. The waterproof sunscreen apparently wore off early, so my calves and the area just below my bathing suit bottom were burned badly. Fortunately I wore my long sleeve rashguard so the top was safe, but the butt burn is still red. We did have a great time cruising the shoreline and reef, though.
Monday afternoon required a nap to rest from the snorkeling exhibition, but it was pleasant to sit on our porch and read. Every evening just after the beautiful sunsets, a large flock of bats would swoop past over the sidewalks right in front of the cottages on their mosquito quest. It was fun to watch them come through. Meals were served in the little bar hut and we were able to get to know the other couples at the resort by chatting over dinner and drinks.
Tuesday we walked to the site of Bob Marley's cottage nearby which took us through the village. We spent a little time soaking in the mineral water pool where he apparently sat and composed some of his music. In the afternoon we took a kayak around the lagoon. One of the other guests went spearfishing with some of the staff and they brought in an impressive haul of rock lobsters, an octopus, a squid, and some other fish. They cooked them up in the evening with a bonfire on the beach, but they waited so late to start that I couldn't stay awake and went to crash. May have been better that I slept because my illness came on during the night that night.
I sent Dad fishing by himself on Wed morning - he caught a little barracuda but we couldn't eat it because the small ones are sometimes poisonous. This one failed the test when Top Shelf, our Jamaican activity person, cut a small piece of the fish and set it down for the ants and they ran away. If they wouldn't eat it, it's a good bet we shouldn't either! We skipped the taxi ride into Negril on Wed afternoon with other couples staying at the resort, but they assured me we didn't miss much. They said it seemed seedy and they were constantly assaulted by merchants trying to sell things. We both just hung out at the cabins and read and napped instead.
Thursday we had planned to go with another couple to a nearby waterfall and river trip. I was not able to leave the security of rest and nearby bathroom, so Dad went with them and another couple and they had a great time. I felt well enough in late morning to do a little more snorkeling with one of the other women, but that was about all I was good for all day. I ate lunch (which may have been a mistake) and spent most of the rest of the day in the cabin listening to the workmen on the other side of the building. I did come down with Dad to dinner which they set up at tables on the beach, but I couldn't eat anything. Just drank several glasses of water and did manage ice cream which would at least slide down easy and give me some nourishment?
We had to be ready at 7 am on Friday for our 1 1/2 hour taxi to the airport. I was dreading the ride through the pothole-heavy roads as my stomach and lower tract were still actively protesting at about 6 am, but fortunately I recovered sufficiently to make it through the entire day without further incident. I was very grateful to fall into my bed this morning.
I'm still being quite cautious about what I put in my belly today, and I'm holding off on returning to my exercise regime until tomorrow. I'm still a little weak and my lower tract has only protested mildly today. I started a 3-day course of Cipro on Thurs night.
I'm finding it hard to deal with the fact that I can only expend brief bursts of energy before I get tired and need a rest. I fear if I push beyond that point, I will start rumbling and spurting again. I want my health back.
Cooked and ate supper tonight, albeit small portions. Hope it has no ill effects. I was pretty tired after grocery shopping and needed a rest before preparing it.
Food;
8:15 am Laura's oatmeal w/blueberries, flaxseed meal, protein powder and soy milk
11:30 am 11 wine crackers
1:45 pm Vanilla soy shake, Nature Valley Oat N Honey granola bars (packet of 2)
4:00 pm 2 servings Jamaican chocolate tea
7:00 pm 2.85 oz mediterranean breaded salmon, 1/4 c green beans, 1/3 c mashed sweet potatoes, 12 oz skim milk

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Are you wearing the green today? I am. I figure since we will be in Chicago today where they celebrate big time, we should look the part.
If anything happens with Grandma while we're gone, they may call your cell phone because Michael is going hiking/camping in the Porkies for his spring break and he may not have phone reception up there. Call us at the resort if any dire circumstances arise.
Had a really nice lunch at Seasons 52. When we checked in, they noted our green tshirts and said they had just checked the Internet. They asked what rank I thought the Chicago St Paddy celebration was for US cities. I guessed second and they were so pleased I was correct that they gave us a free flatbread. Dad also got a free dessert for his birthday so we saved $12 on our meal. We did DAgostino pizza for supper.
Food:
7:45 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, blueberries, protein powder and soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, coffee
2:00 pm. Shrimp flatbread, large salad w/seared ahi tuna, chopped apple, butternut squash, nuts, craisins, miso viniagrette
7:00 pm. Margherita pizza, 9 oz Guiness

Happy Birthday, Bob! I just realized that I completely forgot Kathy and John Hartman's birthdays which are Mar 1 and Feb 11 respectively. We always exchange cards and small gifts, and I never even thought about it this year. Maybe if they let Bob's birthday slide, we can agree that we will exchange gifts at Christmas but let the birthdays slide.
I am all out of berries this morning and missing them. Didn't want to buy some to have them left while we're gone, but maybe we'll pick some up for breakfast Sunday in the hotel since we probably have to leave before the hotel breakfast will be set up.
Damn, I cut a nice little chunk out of my thumb cutting up peppers for my eggs at lunch and the damn thing won't stop bleeding. I'm getting really tired of holding it upright with pressure through a wad of paper towel. It can stp bleeding any time now.
Nice hibachi at Tokyo Steak House with Grandma, Michael and Aly in tow. Aly had never eaten hibachi or sushi before, but she did well.

Beware the Ides of March. This is especially meaningful for Dad as it signals that he will get older tomorrow.
I am tired today. Ecumenical choir rehearsal was a little longer than usual last night so I didn't hit the pillow til abou 9:45. I slept well, so I suspect it's more the psychology of knowing I was shorted over an hour on my sleep. It was a chore to exercise this morning, but I did it.
I would like a "Gandalf for President" button.

Let us know when you will have a few hours available on a Saturday so we can get together. We miss you!

Got one call at 9:10 pm last night as the only call for the whole week of wearing the pager. That call only took half an hour and could be handled from home so it was the best of all possible weeks. I am so happy.
I was tired this morning, possibly because I was sleeping so soundly when the alarm went off that I was loathe to give it up. I hadn't slept great the previous two nights, so good solid sleep felt wonderful.
Sorry you can't be with us for Easter. I do remember you mentioning that April was going to be hellaciously busy this year. Maybe we can tuck down for a visit on Mar 31 and catch you before the craziness starts?

I was tired this morning, possibly because I was sleeping so soundly when the alarm went off that I was loathe to give it up. I hadn't slept great the previous two nights, so good solid sleep felt wonderful.
Sorry you can't be with us for Easter. I do remember you mentioning that April was going to be hellaciously busy this year. Maybe we can tuck down for a visit on Mar 31 and catch you before the craziness starts?

I hope that Dad and I will be singing with Steve at his dad's funeral on Wed morning. It will be good to stand with Steve in friendship and support. What a difficult time he has had of late.
Got to work this morning and looked at my calendar - I had completely forgotten that I had made a breakfast appointment with a client at 8:30. I had a coupon for $5 off breakfast at Ranchitos that needed to be used in March, so I ordered a full breakfast, tasted a little, and brought the remainder home for another meal.
One of my ultimate comfort foods: Uncle Will's meatballs. A very satisfying supper.
Food:
7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 141 g strawberries, coffee
8:45 am 1/4 c egg/shredded beef/veggie combo, 2-3 bites of cantaloupe, 1 homemade tortilla, coffee
11:45 am Vanilla soy shake, 50 g Irish soda bread, orange

Doing pretty well on my sugar reduction plan (except for the two ponczkas). I found myself looking at lots of sugary treats at Aldi's yesterday but putting them back on the shelves. I will try to do Easter basket shopping (except for Grandma) with a less sugar, more healthy treats idea in mind. Suggestions are most welcome.
When I enter a food into the SparkPeople food log, it will sometimes suggest an alternate word when it doesn't recognize what I have entered. When I put in "ponczka", it asked me if I meant "panicky".
Deb McComas has to have another bladder surgery just one year after the last one as the previous "fix" is wearing out. Heckuva way to spend spring break.
Good nap this afternoon, most welcome since I did not sleep very well last night.
I am happy that I'm quite satisfied with a slice of Irish soda bread as a snack, as opposed to sweets. The bread has a slightly sweet dough, but it's subtle enough that it wouldn't have satisfied a sweet tooth. Also satisfied myself with half a large banana for dessert as opposed to other sweets. (And last night's rum-soaked grilled pineapple was as good a dessert as you could want!) I expect to sample the local desserts in Jamaica, but they are often fruit- or coconut-based.
Food:
8:00 am Ponczka, 1/2 grapefruit, 141 g strawberries, coffee
12:00 pm Crepe, 2 scrambled eggs, veggie mix, coffee
3:45 pm 42 g Irish soda bread
5:15 pm 3 oz chicken breast, 1 c veggies(zucchini, peppers, onions, asparagus), 1/2 c brown rice, 12 oz skim milk, .5 large banana

Hoping to get most of the packing/vacation prep done today since I have to be home with the pager this weekend. I started collecting things last Saturday, so today I'll try to finalize choices and get things put into bags. I was thrilled to find my lost sunglasses last night. We went to Ranchitos for the coconut shrimp and I asked the waitress if I might have left them there last week. I was thrilled when she found them in a bin behind the desk. Saves me needing to purchase another pair for vacation,
We will take Dad out for dinner next Friday night to Tokyo Steak House for hibachi for his birthday. Michael and Aly will come, as will Grandma. Wish you could be with us, too.
Gave in at the grocery store to a small pack (2) of prune ponczkas. I have been trying to eschew the sweets but the season for ponczkas is short and they are so yummy.
Oooh, I had fun with making supper tonight. I got to use one of the gadgets from the basket I won last December that I had thought I would never use - the Pineapple Corer/Slicer. It is SLICK! You attach the handle and set it on top of the pineapple after cutting off both ends and just screw downward. The little angled blade makes perfect slices while the center piece cleanly cuts the core. When you get to the bottom, you just lift the pineapple clear of the rind with minimal waste, remove the handle and turn the spiral onto a plate. One cut makes it into nice little rings. (Then I dipped each ring in a small dish of rum and grilled them - yum!)
Food:
7:15 am Prune ponczka, 1/2 grapefruit, 140 g strawberries, coffee, 38 g Irish soda bread
12:30 pm Blueberry soy shake, 2 large scrambled eggs, 1/4 c chopped red pepper, 1 large chopped cherry tomato, basil/thyme, 1 tbl shredded cheddar, 42 g Irish soda bread
6:45 pm 1 chicken/smoked mozzarella/artichoke sausage, 1 hot dog bun, 1 tbl pineapple salsa, 4 slices rum grilled pineapple, 4 large baby carrots, 1/2 c Grillin' Beans, 12 oz skim milk

In looking ahead to next week, forecasters are predicting 50s and even 60s for much of the week. I am sooooo ready! Knowing Wisconsin, it may be followed by a week in single digits, but I'll take what I can get. I need to pick up a new pair of sunglasses as mine have disappeared. The neck strap had taken to coming loose on one side, so I assume it fell off when I had them hanging around my neck on a day when the sunshine was sufficiently sporadic that I didn't miss them when I went back outside. Still sort of hoping they'll turn up as they were nice ones.
Got up as usual to exercise this morning, but my right hip started complaining when I walked. Realized that the Mon/Tues routines had lying abduction/adduction segments and the Wed/Thurs routines had a lot of kickboxing kicks. I guess the old hip decided it wanted a day off. I will be home tomorrow since I'm on call, so I can do day 6 then. Speaking of on call, I have so far been extremely fortunate that I have had no calls whatsoever.
Seriously enjoyed Yourmometer this morning. Definitely my kind of humor.
When I went to Ranchitos for the birthday lunch today, I noticed as I was leaving that the supper special was coconut shrimp (for only $8.45). I suspected at the time that I knew what I'd be eating for supper, and I was right. And as a bonus, I found my missing sunglasses there!
Food:
7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 147 g strawberries, coffee
12:00 pm Chips/salsa, 2 spinach enchiladas, mole sauce, 1/2 c refried beans, 1 tbl shredded cheese, 1/2 c Mexican rice, 1/4 c iceberg lettuce, .75 tbl sour cream
6:00 pm Margarita, chips/salsa, 5 coconut shrimp, 1/2 c Mexican rice, 1/2 c iceberg lettuce, 1 tbl chopped tomatoes

I joined the Tame Your Sweet Tooth challenge on Spark People, but it would have been better timing for the challenge to start a week or two ago as I had already taken it on myself to do something like this, using Lent as a motivator. I have been doing quite well. I am only really having sweets/desserts if we travel someplace special, e.g. our Chicago weekend. I don't intend to pass up the special treats I may have only one chance to try. I expect to try some fun stuff in Jamaica on vacation also, but hopefully in moderation. I'm actually more looking forward to the fruits and fresh fish.
I had been eating a small sweet treat several times a day which is likely a major factor in why I can't get the weight loss thing going again in spite of stepping up the intensity of many of my workouts. In the past when I have successfully lost weight, sweets had to take a backseat as an extremely occasional treat instead of a daily indulgence even if they are factored into my calories for the day.

Checked out well on my physical. Paul said I take better care of myself than 95% of his patients. Now if I'd just schedule that darn colonoscopy...... maybe when I set up the mammogram and next year's physical appointment, I'll just get it on the books.

I have my physical this morning with Dr. Munck. Need to 'fess up to the weight remaining about 15-20 lbs higher than it should be and still not having scheduled a colonoscopy in spite of encouragement the last three physicals. This year he suggested Dad get one, too. I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet and put it on the schedule. I'm not really dreading the procedure as much as the fact that, with 3-5 days of diet changes plus the last day of prep and a day of recovery, it's daunting to find a chunk of your schedule that will accommodate it.

We have early choir at 1:15 today because our director has an evening commitment. I kind of prefer this because it's nice to have the Sunday evening free, though it means rushing Grandma a bit. I don't rush her too much since it's not a vital commitment to be on time. If we're late, we still sing most of the music.

Had to go in for fasting labs this morning since I missed the appointment yesterday. I made the original appointment a year ago before I even had a calendar for this year, and the Clinic's computer is glitchy and not currently producing reminder letters so I had no idea I was supposed to have fasting labs yesterday. Fortunately, the lab now has Saturday hours as my physical is scheduled for 8 am on Monday, also a surprise.
Came home after labs and put together some yummy breakfast crepes. I originally had my heart set on banana/Nutella, but discovered I had no Nutella and anything that resembled it in my cupboard was old and no longer smelled appetizing. Upside is that I now have more room in my cupboard. I compromised by mixing some light sour cream with brown sugar and cinnamon, and slicing some strawberries along with the bananas and did not at all feel deprived.
Cantoring went fine at church. Spaghetti on the stove with many good peppers and zucchini and onions.
Food:
9:15 am 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g blackberries, coffee
9:45 am 2 crepes, 1 med banana, 2 extra large strawberries, 1/8 c light sour cream, 1/2 tbl brown sugar, cinnamon, coffee
1:00 pm Chocolate soy shake, 2 Benton's honey graham crackers, 1 tbl Peter Pan Whipped PB
6:45 pm 1 c whole wheat spaghetti, 3 oz extra lean ground beef, 1/8 c onion, 1/4 c red pepper, 1/2 small zucchini, 1/2 c arrabiata sauce, 1/2 tbl grated parmesan, 12 oz skim milk, 4 oz Espresso Chocowine

Fri 2 Mar
Had evening after work out with current coworkers, second monthly installment of a new tradition, last night. Shouldn't have given in to the second margarita, but the first one went down so nicely! Oh, well.
Decided to sleep in this morning because I don't really have anything major planned for tomorrow since I have to cantor in the evening. I have more energy to exercise on a Saturday at home because I can do it after I've had breakfast and a chance to relax a bit at the computer. So Friday seemed the better choice for the day of rest this week.
Going out to breakfast with a client this morning, so just doing my fruit at home.
Wow, this restaurant we went to believes in overfeeding. Their omelettes use 7 eggs each! I ordered two eggs over easy and got three.
Went to Clancy's for fish. Saw Tom and Louise Pease and chatted on our way out. Been a long time since we've seen Tom.
Food:
7:00 am 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g blackberries, coffee
8:30 am 3 eggs, 2 pc wheat? toast, 1 tub orange marmalade, 1 bite hash browns, coffee
11:45 am Strawberry/banana soy shake, large pear
5:45 pm 4 oz Prairie Fume, 5 oz lemon pepper baked fish, 3/4 c rosemary red potatoes, 1/4 c cole slaw, 1/2 slice rye bread, 1/2 pat butter

Welcome, March! Looks like a cold, gray lamb out there.
Had a nice dinner at El Ranchito last night with Linda Weitz, Deb Pierce-Johnson, Sarah Janz, Tracy Dorrler, and Sue Chapman. We laughed and caught up on old times. I rarely do a get-together with the girls, so it was a nice change of pace. Followed by Ecumenical choir, so I shorted my sleep length two nights in a row.
Going to meet a new client today who is very manic. It's like talking to the Energizer bunny.
Evening out after work for current coworkers. Gave in to a second margarita and am definitely feeling it. Noshed on chicken and beef nachos and queso fundido. I had to bring in a heavy bag of groceries from the car and I tripped and sat in a puddle leaving the garage. Ooops!
Food:
7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 100 g blackberries, coffee
12:30 pm Vanilla soy shake, Country Hearth English muffin, 1.5 tbl Peter Pan Whipped PB, large pear
