Tues 25 Mar

Somewhat sleepy/dopey this morning. Maybe because I did a new step video so I had to follow closely to keep up, always a challenge early in the morning.

It's noon and I'm still a little sleepy. Busy morning, running in several directions at once doesn't help.

Mon 24 Mar

Michael is home safely, had a great time, and a nice concert last night. He would have liked about 3.5 hrs more of sleep today, but he'll catch up eventually. He starts playing with the Pacelli tennis team tonight.

I do not recommend the coconut water. I tried ice, but even cold, I couldn't make myself finish it. I don't care how many minerals/nutrients it has, it sucks.

I created my own Southwest Chicken Stew today. Threw 3 frozen chicken breasts in the crock pot on low with a generous seasoning of cumin and Goya Bitter Orange seasoned salt this morning. At noon, I added a can of rinsed black beans and a can of diced tomatoes w/green chiles and a coarsely chopped yellow pepper. At 5, I cut the chicken breasts into chunks and stirred it up and started a pot of brown rice. I served it in bowls w/a brown rice base and a ladle or two of stew on top. It was yummy.

Sun 23 Mar

Ballet wasn't as hard as I feared it might be this morning. Actually felt kind of good to exercise after a day off.

Hope Michael is having a wonderful time with his choir trip. He was so looking forward to it. They do a joint concert with SPASH tonight at St. Paul's Methodist so we'll skip out early from our choir practice to go hear them.

Too big a crowd for breakfast at Olympic w/Grandma, so we tried the brunch buffet at Charcoal Grill. Nothing to write home about but not bad overall.

Just learned that our flights to/from Geneva have layovers in NYC, but the second flight takes off from a different airport. We will need to get ourselves, and presumably our luggage, from La Guardia to JFK and vice versa on the return trip. That should make things a little more interesting.

Bought ourselves Champion tshirts from Target that are synthetic wicking material similar to UnderArmor but cheaper. Should be fine.

BTW, Grandma would be happy to buy you a good sports bra for Easter in addition to the socks. If you can get to a store to buy one, put it on your Jedi Master Card and she will pay for it. You might be able to get to Fontana on State St.

Food:

8:15 am Vanilla soy shake, 147 g strawberries, slice Cinnabon cinnamon toast, 1 tsp margarine
12:15 pm 1/2 c scrambled eggs w/cheese, 1/2 slice French toast w/strawberries, 1 very small biscuit w/gravy, 3/4 c melon, 1 slice bacon, 3 oz rotisserie chicken, 1/2 c American fries, 1" slice kringle, coffee

Sat 22 Mar

Haven't hopped in the shower yet, but will soon. We're bringing coupons to try Jamba Juice oatmeal for $1 (good thru the end of March), so we could grab some early and eat at Monty's later.

Will take a break from exercising, other that walking around to shop, today again in hopes that my over-trained legs will recover enough to get back on track again by tomorrow. I allow up to 2 days off per week, so I'm still in my okay zone.

Made it home just before the coach turned into a pumpkin. Driving wasn't pretty; road kept threatening to poof in and out of existence.

Food:

8:00 am White chocolate raspberry scone, 168 g strawberries, cherry juice from concentrate, tea
2:30 pm 2 lg potato/zucchini pancakes, 1/3 c sour cream, 1/3 c apple/cranberry sauce, 8 oz coffee malted, 1/3 pc strawberry/rhubarb pie

Fri 27 Mar

Couldn't make myself get out of bed to exercise early this morning. Last night I couldn't fall asleep til I was sure Michael, Nick and John had settled down. Then I woke up around 2:30 to listen to be sure they got up and got moving. Then I had to come down about 3:15 to be sure Michael had remembered everything so he didn't call in a panic when he got to the bus for us to bring something. Plus the cat didn't want to stay downstairs with the boys, he preferred to crawl on me. Dad put him in the hall and closed the door and he pawed at the door and meowed for awhile. By the time 4:40 alarm went off, I wanted another hour of uninterrupted sleep! I get done with work early this afternoon due to working late two days this week, so I can work out then.

Friday weigh-in was down to 127 so I'm only 2 pounds up due to vacation. I suspect that because the eating has been off lately, I'll actually have to work those two pounds back off. I don't think I can attribute any more to water or fluctuation. Sigh.

Dad and I will try to leave for Madison around 9 am. We want to get to Fontana, REI, and Target besides Monty's, groceries, and any errands you may want to run. If you have things you need to do on your own, we can do the Fontana/REI on our own but you are also most welcome to come with us. We'll call as we come in to Madison and you can let us know your preferences if we don't hear sooner.

Food:

7:00 am Blueberry scone, cherry juice from concentrate, 163 g strawberries, coffee

Thurs 26 Mar

Got a really good deal on airfare last night to Geneva - saved $400-$500 over what I had expected to pay and got good times for departures/arrivals with only one stop each way. We will fly out of O'Hare on Sun, Jun 21 in the afternoon and return on Thurs, Jul 2 in the evening. We won't need to stay overnight in Chicago on either end which saves some money. We did discover that Dad's passport expired in January, so he is in process of getting it renewed but he has plenty of time. I will send in the trip deposits today. I'm a little excited - can you tell?

Hope Mpls is tolerable and the interview goes well. I'm assuming we'll hear from you whenever you get a response from any of the interviews that's notable. Dad and I will come for sure on Saturday. We also want to get to Fontana to get fitted for good hiking boots so we can start breaking them in. We have 3 months to get our feet and legs in shape for Alpine hiking.

It was good to take my day off from exercise today. Three out of the last four days were heavy on lower body and my legs are really feeling it. I want to strengthen them but I sure don't want to cause injury.

I'm sure the whole interview/hiring politics is completely annoying, but nice to know you have two interested parties. I hope that when all is said and done, you find an option that makes you happy.

Food:

7:00 am 1 c All-Bran Strawberry Medley, 1/2 c light vanilla soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, cherry juice from concentrate, coffee

Wed 25 Mar

Had to weigh in again today to see if there is any improvement - it was 127.8, a little better. I still have a little water retention based on the fit of my ring, but it's coming down to normal. Hopefully the scale will pop down a bit more, too.

I believe I've found a way to make financing the hiking trip work in spite of the nasty tax burden again. I can fund much of the trip from my own savings for now and Dad can help me put a little of it back as he gets past taxes. I'd like to get down to Fontana soon to get us both good shoes so we can break them in. We're thinking about this Saturday since Michael will be with his choir at St. John's. Do you think you could free up enough time for a mid-afternoon lunch at Monty's when they might not be as busy?

Where are you flying to now? Another interview? Details?

Good luck with the interview. Absolutely we can take you grocery shopping as long as you can spare the time. I planned a Woodman's stop anyway to restock soy milk and look for coconut water.

Didn't do very well on calories today. Purposely had basic breakfast and lunch because I knew there would be a bake sale at work, but I bought/ate more than I should have. Need to get it back under control!

Tues 24 Mar

The first time back on the scale after vacation was not a pleasant experience. Up to 128.6. Ate some of the leftover pasta for supper last night, one of the less salty ones, but still think there might be a little water in that number. Going to have to jack up the exercise and be more careful right away til that weight comes back down. Hopefully it's just a little normal fluctuation and not actual weight gain. I will finish the scones I brought home from Door Co, but never more than one a day.

Sun 22 Mar

Back to getting up early to exercise, though Sundays it's not til 6:45 which really isn't all that early. Tomorrow it's back to 4:45. Yesterday I waited for the new DVDs to arrive so I didn't hit the exercise til 11:00. Dad and I took a nice late afternoon walk to supplement.

Not going to get the promised night off from choir practice after all. The director is off with his family on their spring break, but Vicki is going to direct and Chris will accompany so we don't miss another week. Two weeks ago we had the Sunday snowstorm, and I expect we weren't the only ones gone for our spring break last week.

Sat 21 Mar

I'm expecting delivery of some new exercise DVDs today. I'm going to hold off working out til at least 10:30-11:00 in hopes that they arrive so I can try one out.

Looks like the hiking trip to the Pyrenees is a no-go. Dad will take a big tax hit again this year since the accountant still couldn't seem to figure out the appropriate estimated tax to pay during the year. Dad's earnings have seemed quite stable, so I really think it is a poor accountant issue, but he has to pay the taxes now so that shoots his savings. I can't bankroll the whole trip or neither of us would have anything left for emergencies. I guess it goes back to being a "someday" dream.

The new DVDs came. Tried the Jillian Michaels 30- day blast. Each of 3 levels is about 20 min plus warmup and cooldown. Sounded simple but it's nicely intense. Had planned to do all three back to back, but I'm winded after one. Maybe I'll try another one later in the day.

Food:

9:00 am Cherry scone, 8 oz Door Co Cherry juice, tea
12:30 pm Chobani 0% blueberry yogurt, hot cross bun, 1/3 pc chocolate cake w/frosting

Fri 20 Mar

Traveling day. Got up and packed as much as possible before breakfast, will load car after we eat. Suman will come with us to breakfast, then fly home this afternoon out of Green Bay. We helped him choose gifts for the kids at Al's last night - a Viking book for Haden and Pippi Longstocking books for Morgan. Kitty requested a canvas bag from the Packer Hall of Fame.

Food:

10:00 am 2 granola/pecan pancakes, 2 pats Promise, 3 tbl real maple syrup, coffee

8:30 pm 4 bites chocolate mint cake

Thurs 19 Mar

We went back to the Bistro for breakfast today. Will do the White Gull with Suman tomorrow as he will come and take a room at the Newport tonight when he finishes his work. We expect him in time for dinner, and will take him to Al's. Everybody who visits Door Co needs to go to Al's at least once.

Temperatures are much colder today. We had enjoyed 50s and sunshine but today is back to reality. Temps in the 20s, might see low 30s in mid-afternoon. Brisk wind, too.

Wed 18 Mar

Didn't get/make opportunity to exercise today as we went to meet Suman in Green Bay. We left around noon from the hotel and got back in the evening with full bellies from Victoria's in Appleton.

Decided to try a new breakfast place - scandalous! We went back to the Bistro at Liberty Square where we had dinner last night. They are almost across the street from the Market so about 2-3 blocks from our hotel instead of a drive to Fish Creek. They were wonderful - delicious food, prices comparable to White Gull, gracious hosts. This place will definitely join the roster of regular haunts.

Took Suman to the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame. Grandma enjoyed it, too. It has been extensively remodeled since I last saw it 10 years ago or more.

Tues 17 Mar

It got tiresome to update the blog on the iPod and the lobby computer was just too slow. Went back to the old-fashioned notebook log, figuring I could put in the updates when I got back to my familiar setup.

Vacation was very restful. First time I can remember going to Door Co and not cracking open a book, but we enjoyed Animal Crossing in its stead. Grandma enjoyed several episodes of Little House that I had brought. She probably got a little bored though listening to all of us play Animal Crossing throughout the day.

Happy birthday, Dad!

Another beautiful, sunny day! Breakfast at White Gull is the perfect start to the day. Drove thru Peninsula and climbed the tower twice - and without need for a jacket! Sun 15 Mar

Oh no! I have to cope with change again. My website for tracking daily steps now switched to tracking overall exercise, rated as moderate or vigorous and strength training. You now set weekly goals in those categories. Going to take some getting used to not to be tracking in just steps and their equivalents.

Arrived in Door Co in mid-afternoon. Stopped in Green Bay for lunch at Red Lobster first. Weather is gorgeous. Dad and I took a nice hour-long walk.

Food:

8:15 am 1 c Raisin Bran Extra, 1/2 c light vanilla soy milk, cherry juice from concentrate

Sat 14 Mar

Was blown away by how bad the Pacelli fish fry came out on the calorie counter. I was hungry and tired so I actually ate everything that came with it, and it was a full day's calories and fat in one meal! I felt vaguely nauseous all evening thinking about what I had put in my body. And since this cold has taken my energy for awhile, I couldn't even do another workout to make up for it a little. Not sure if I'll find energy to work out today either. Saturday has always been an optional-workout day. I'd like to, but I don't want to push exhaustion when I should be recovering.

Need to pack and decide what diversions to take to Door Co. Considering taking that box of photos you started to organize for me years ago and a couple of blank albums. Might be fun to go through old photos when no other obligations are calling.

BTW, picked up the Hartman portraits yesterday. I like them very much.

No pie, sigh!

Food:

8:00 am 1 serving hot wheat cereal, 1 tsp packed brown sugar, 2 oz light vanilla soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, cherry juice from concentrate, coffee

1:00 pm Slice banana bread
6:15 pm 3 oz tilapia, 1 tbl chipotle tartar sauce, large toasted bun, large leaf lettuce, 2 slices tomato, 1 c fruit salad

Fri 13 Mar

Two months of Fri the 13 in a row! Woo hoo!

Wasn't a problem getting up to exercise this morning, so I'm glad I opted to "sleep in" yesterday when I really felt like I needed it. Tomorrow I can really sleep in as I just have to do laundry, pack, pm church w/Grandma. I feel like break starts as soon as I leave work today.

Hope you have a wonderful, fun and restful spring break. We'll be thinking of you often.

Michael and John picked up take-out Pacelli fish fry for us for supper.

12 March 2009

Thurs 12 Mar

I broke down and shaved my legs today. Maybe I should have waited for warmer weather - those furry knee socks probably helped keep me warm.

Still trying to fight off the cold, and hoping it doesn't hit full force to put a damper on my Door County week. At least I'll have plenty of opportunity to rest while I'm there. Going to try to figure out a couple of fitness DVD's that could be done in the limited living room space of the Newport to complement swimming and their small fitness room.

Thought I might power through and get my fifth exercise day in today instead of skipping Thursday as is my pattern. When the alarm went off at 4:40, decided it was best to get the extra rest as the cold is developing and hope that tomorrow will feel more like a day to get up and move. Hope it was the right decision.

I'm more interested in getting my body temp back up within normal limits and sleep than food, but I guess I'll eat a Greek yogurt and granola to get some protein before tending to my warmth needs.

Food:

7:00 am 1 c Raisin Bran Extra, 1/2 c skim milk, 1/2 grapefruit, cherry juice from concentrate, coffee
11:45 am Blueberry soy shake, slice 12-grain toast, 1 tbl nutella, med banana

Wed 11 Mar

Thought I was going to beat this cold but today it feels like it's definitely coming on. Throat feels sore and drainy, etc. Will slam more Cold-Eze and try to rest. Michael asked me to switch Suzuki on Monday so I don't have to go out tonight. Just have to get through a cold work day. Sigh.

I think the cold is winning the fight.

Tues 10 Mar

The week moves along - soon it will be spring break. I think we'll make it. Hope all is going well preparing for interviews. Do you ever hear anything back from any you've completed?

Try finding a tennis ball and laying on the floor with it under your offending sore shoulder blade. Move around a little to use the ball to massage the spot. Low-tech self-massage.

I've been in a cooking mood lately. Sunday night was roasted veggie pizza, last night was turkey cheddar eggs w/peppers and onions, tonight casserole w/chicken, whole wheat pasta, red pepper, eggplant, onion, and mozzarella cheese. It's fun to cook when you're in the mood.

Sun 8 Mar

Made it up to exercise in spite of the time change. Decided to turn on Dad's Verilux light to help my body to get in the swing of daylight while I'm at the computer. I usually don't suffer from DST hangover until Monday morning getting up so early for work.

Snow had good timing - we got a snow day from choir! Got to putz with my pizza so I roasted some fresh veggies and fresh pineapple to top the pizza. Twas yummy - wish I could have shared it with you. Michael still isn't feeling up to snuff, so he slept most of the afternoon after church and ate some of my leftover Irish stew.

Food:

8:00 am Kwik Trip cinnamon roll, small banana

Sat 7 Mar

Sounds good - we'll try to leave closer to 10 than 11, and there's no specific rush so we should have time to find what you need.

While I'm thinking of it, I could use some tips for incorporating swimming into the fitness scheme for spring break. Any ideas for how a swimmer of just basic ability and little stamina would do this for 5 days?

Also while I'm thinking of it, if you could plan into your schedule to come home for a few days after graduation, I'd like to schedule you to see the dentist, eye doctor, and photo session with John Hartman. I'd just need to know what days you could spare. Also, I hope you plan to come for Easter. Since you may be farther away next year, it would really be nice if you'd stay over and do vigil and brunch with us, but even Saturday dinner is better than nothing. (Sorry if that comes off as a guilt trip - I don't mean to. I just would love to have you with us while we still can.)

Hitting the road around 10:10 am. See you soon.

Thinking of you and wishing you the best of luck on your interviews. I know this can be a very frustrating process, most especially in these financial times. Planning to leave tomorrow between 10-11 am. Does this work for you?

Feeling back to normal again today. Nice to see temps above freezing on the thermometer when I get up.

When you take the bus to Chicago for an interview, do you wear your interview clothes all day or take things to change? Just curious.

My thoughts for Saturday were for us to get there sometime noon or a little after - we could do lunch if you haven't eaten yet, any shopping that you'd like, and dinner if that works out. We're flexible depending on your schedule so let us know what works best for you.

Wed 4 Mar

It was really hard to get up this morning and exercise. Would probably have been just as hard to get up an hour later for work even if I skipped exercise today instead of tomorrow. I'm somewhat achy and slightly chilled and really hoping I'm not getting what Michael had. I don't have a sore throat and it's not really bad, so hopefully my body is healthy enough to fight it off. I don't wanna be sick! Maybe it's just the aftermath of having a Point beer last night.

Feeling better by noon, so hopefully the tiredness/achiness was a passing thing. Good riddance!

Michael's 5-minute strep test was negative and he appears to be getting his energy back. They will run a 24-hour test to be sure. He was not fond of the throat swab.

-11° again! Yucch! I am so anxious to stop whining when I get up in the morning. I don't imagine you enjoy walking to school in this cold either. I guess the only way to stop whining is to shut up and forget about it. At least the grapefruit have been really good lately.

Sun 1 Mar

March is coming in sunny but still nasty cold. Just got through reading part of a blog on SparkPeople from women starting/going through menopause. When I was having children, it seemed that women couldn't wait to share their pregnancy/delivery stories. Now, judging from the number and average length of responses, the same tendency stretches to menopause stories. I guess if we have to go through it, we want to be able to tell about it. Like guys who have been overseas telling war stories, I suppose.

Thinking about making a visit to you on Sat, Mar 7 - just to see you, have lunch or dinner together, shop, the usual. Let me know if it's a good weekend for you,

Also, before I forget again, when do you want out of our cell phone plan? Your contract runs through 3/29/09, so you can have out any time thereafter without us paying $200 for a penalty. We have to stick with Sprint month-to-month on the rest of us til Michael's contract is up on 9/29/09 so it's no problem to keep you on our plan as long as you like. Just let me know what works best for you.

Nummers! Just tried Chobani Greek yogurt for the first time. I had the nonfat vanilla and it was delicious! Came up a bit short on protein today, but I'm just a hair over calories already so I'll let it go today.
