It was harder than usual to get up this morning, but somehow those days I feel more virtuous when I do it. I added a segment of the SparkPeople video for some cardio before the weights video for a more complete workout. Gotta reverse this weight gain trend!

Had a good hike last night, but tired when I got home. We tried sending Steve a Facebook message to join us at the Dane afterward if he felt the need to get away, but I don't know if he got the message as we didn't hear back from him. Weather was certainly beautiful for the hike.
Tonight is the last night before Michael's new girlfriend heads off to Green Bay for college so I invited them for dinner. Actually I texted Michael earlier today. I thought he accepted a bit quickly because he may not have cleared it with her. He got back to me later to say she had to be home to pack til 8 pm, but I didn't find his response til I was going to text him to ask where they were. In the meantime, I had baked a fresh cherry crisp and had 6 ears of corn on the grill. I was able to save two of the pork chops before grilling for another day. Oh, well.

Now that the fair is history for another year, it's hard to deny that summer is waning. Time to crack down on eating treats as this weekend was not good in that department. Did reasonably well at the fair, except for an indulgence in chocolate chip cookies at the end, but overall ate more than I ought and the scale confirmed it. Can't continue in this vein.

Finally got to hike again last night. I was on the pager the rest of the week, so as soon as I was free, we took advantage of the cooler weather and got back to Rib. I was really tired all day from having to wake up to deal with the pager late Thurs, but I made it. Dinner at the Dane was a welcome reward.
Today it's on to Mpls. We got a really awesome deal at the Sofitel for tonight - $77 tax included. Nice dinner somewhere in the Cities, some shopping and church today, and the fair tomorrow!

Last night's union meeting was really scary. The county board is voting to remove the need to have just cause to let someone go and completely eliminating seniority rights, so as soon as the contract ends, they can choose to let anyone go without much recourse. Makes me feel like I'll have to watch every step very closely. No more adding snack food to my food trackers at work or stopping to run errands on my breaks. Fortunately, I have a very good boss at this time so I don't think she'll arbitrarily axe people.
A plethora of extra large centipedes in the basement this morning. Not a nice way to start the day.

Made it to Thursday so far. After vacation, the first work week seems somewhat interminable, even though it's been reasonably calm. I've been very fortunate that my on-call shift has been slow this week. I prefer quiet to earning comp time.
I got my first pay stub preview with the Walker-induced retirement contribution changes. I was puzzled initially because my bottom line seemed about the same until I realized that the first 3.75 hrs of on-call coverage payment was included on this check. Usually that makes a nice little extra, but this time it just made up the difference.
Last night of on-call had to give me one last hurrah.

I saw REI's email previewing their Labor Day sale and realized I'm not ready for summer to come to an end. Not that this will slow the inevitable in the slightest, but I'm still enjoying summer! I liked our vacation together in Virginia as well as all the little excursions Dad and I have taken to enjoy the season. I like being warm enough without jackets and sweaters. Oh, well.

Between reading an article today on the benefits of chewing food well and eating slowly and a recent lecture from my daughter, I'm trying! (At least during breakfast today while it's on my mind.) I never used to eat fast, but years of having places to go and things to do as soon as mealtime is over have developed some bad habits.
I don't think Jordan was ready for the return of early morning exercise today. He just stared at me as I came downstairs from his perch on the windowsill, then went upstairs to finish his sleep, I suspect.
Tonight was a culinary experiment that definitely didn't work. Not often I leave half my plate uneaten. I used the remaining ground lamb and browned it with onion and lots of fresh green pepper, then added about 1/2 c of Matsaman curry paste and some hot water to thin it. I served it over basmati rice and topped it with some of the homemade tzatziki. The curry sauce was hotter than I like, but the killer was that it was way too salty. I just couldn't deal with the saltiness, even when cut by the rice and tzatziki. I was glad of a little leftover basmati to round out my meal.

Email response from cabin owner said she was happy we left the cabin in such great shape. Nice to return my $250 deposit to my checkbook. I will go on the VRBO website and give her a positive review as I thought the property was very nice, though I probably won't mention that your bed was not comfortable.
Dad is excited about the app he downloaded to find food and merchant vendors at the Minnesota State Fair next weekend. I'm looking forward to an asparagus/Swiss cheese crepe for breakfast and one of the totally awesome peaches from the fruit stand outside the food building. An improvement over the days when my fondest cravings were for mini-donuts and chocolate chip cookies. (Though we'll probably bring home some cookies, too.)
I've discovered numerous bug bites on my back which I assume are from the vacation. I'm mystified because I always had a shirt, sometimes two shirts, on whenever I was outside. I pulled what appeared to be a stinger out of one of the bites yesterday.

Today I woke up around 6:30 wanting to get up and exercise! Yay! Yesterday I felt vaguely guilty for not exercising all day but I really just wanted to chill and re-acclimate to being home. I think it was best to wait for readiness which thankfully wasn't long in coming. I finally got the SparkPeople free DVD that I won and gave it a try. I was (unpleasantly) surprised that I couldn't keep up with the whole thing. It was 6 10-minute segments of cardio that never rested and got increasingly more intense. I kept up with the first three, did the fourth with some modifications, gave up and did my own crunch mat workout during the fifth, and stretched and watched the sixth. Someday I may be able to do the whole shebang, but it's nicely organized so that if I need a short cardio supplement to a strength workout, I can just do one or two segments.
I'm kind of excited about supper. I'm thawing some ground lamb and plan to make burgers w/garlic, salt, pepper, and fresh oregano. I will serve them on Arnold's whole wheat thins w/thinly sliced tomato and homemade tzatziki sauce so they will be like little gyros in burger form.
Tzatziki was good but the combo was a little less outstanding than I had expected. I think I made the lamb burgers too thick. I also steamed some frozen cauliflower and mixed it with chopped fresh tomatoes and basil which I liked. Dad thought it could have been more peppery, though.
Food:
8:30 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 90 g raspberries, coffee
12:00 pm Blueberry soy shake, slice Country Hearth 100% whole wheat bread, 1 tbl almond butter, 71 g cucumber
2:45 pm Brownie
6:15 pm 5.3 oz ground lamb burger, Arnold's 100% whole wheat sandwich thin, 2 tbl homemade tzatziki, 2/3 c cauliflower, 2 thin slices tomato, 1/4 c chopped tomato, 5 oz Viognier, 1/2 c vanilla bean ice cream, 2 tbl hot fudge sauce
Exercise:
7:00-7:50 am Cardio blast DVD, 10 min crunch mat, cool down and stretch

Home again, home again, riggity jig. Nice to sleep in own bed, get up to own stuff, own routines. Got to go in to pick up the pager to begin a week of on-call.
Had planned to call Sue at Hair Co to check on when my next appointment is scheduled. She called at about 11:10 am to let me know it was 11:00 am today. Fortunately she could still fit me in if I hurried, so I am now stripe-free. Bought a melon and some sweet corn on the square while I was there.
Felt vaguely guilty drinking a California Viognier I had chilled in the fridge from Barboursville glasses. You're right, the California vintage isn't as tasty.
Didn't get a full night's sleep last night and didn't nap today (though I wasn't particularly vigorous, either). Starting to feel sleepy around 7:30. Got Grandma fixed up with some briefs; she was glad to see us.

It's here! Vacation day is finally here! And I'm eating my breakfast at 3:30 am. Hopefully I won't need to be up quite this early on vacation except perhaps on Old Rag day. I expect we should be able to get out of here by 4:30 and pick you up around 6:30. That should get us to the airport, parked, and ready to check in by 7:00. Flying through Cincinnati this morning; can't say I've ever gone through that airport, at least that I remember.

I have the extra set of hiking poles packed, so let me know if you won't be needing them. Tonight will be for checking things over and printing out more maps. Michael wants to come have dinner with us, and I'll want to head to bed early as I'll be getting up by 2:15-2:30. We'll try to head out of Point at 4:30 and hopefully pick you up around 6:30 am to give us time to get to the airport, park, check the larger bag (with leftover room to bring home wine bottles and glasses). See you tomorrow!

We're planning to hike with Barb tonight so I may not get to work on the itinerary too much. If I don't get much farther, at least I'll try to print out directions to several of the wineries of interest. Not sure if there's enough to do around Charlottesville itself to merit leaving some time to explore that area. Perhaps as a way to slow down winery consumption?
I checked out a weather forecast for the area around the cottage and it looks quite good. They expect to cool down to the low to mid-80s while we're there. Possible thundershowers on the weekend, but otherwise sunny to partly cloudy. Would be nice to have pleasant weather.
First time in quite a while that I ran out of soy shakes before the next order arrived. I usually postpone the order at least twice, and this time I didn't accurately notice that I'd run out before it got here.
Well, we shall have some extra time to work on itinerary and pack and generally prepare. We had intended to hike tonight and in fact got all the way up to Rib with Barb to find that a large, windy, and extremely rainy mass of clouds was settled over Rib. We were hydroplaning on the road on the way back home as it picked the moment of our arrival to release its deluge. It will also allow me time to bake a loaf of cherry chocolate chip bread to share with coworkers tomorrow.
GOOD NEWS! My old set of hiking poles is functional again. Dad got the pole that was stuck in the closed position to open (and shut) again. If you have not yet purchased or received your poles and would like us to pack these, just let me know.
If you haven't committed yet to a purchase, you may even have this set as I now have my new ones.

I'm starting to get excited for our trip. If you have a chance to shoot me the names of any particular wineries or hikes, along with recommendations for weekday vs. weekend, I'll prepare a skeleton itinerary with directions and look for other things along the routes such as good restaurants or interesting sights. Might be easier at home with a computer/printer setup. We can still go with the flow if preferred, even if we have a tentative itinerary drawn up.
I tried applying some of the alignment principles Joan has been teaching us in her Pilates class during the ballet DVD and found they made it somewhat easier. My biggest problem was engaging my upper trapezius and allowing my shoulder blades to ride up. Keeping them down and basing my arm movements from the beneath the shoulder blades allows more space to engage the upper parts of the core and more support.
Sat down to print some maps to/from cottage and noticed a slight problem. I don't have the actual address of the cottage yet. I emailed the owner to get this little vital piece of information along with her check-in procedure. She told me a while back she would email me the code to get in so I expect I'd hear from her soon, but best to get the actual location asap. Looks like about 1 1/2 hours to the south entrance of Shenandoah from the general area of the cottage.
Got address and entrance code email. Good to go.
Food:
8:00 am 1 c Quaker Oat Squares, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 149 g blueberries, coffee
12:00 pm 2 pc French toast, 1.5 tbl whipped butter, 1 tbl pancake syrup, coffee
3:15 pm Cran-Pomegranate drink mix w/32 oz water, 1 pkg Cranberry Almond Thins
4:00 pm 3 spoonfuls hot fudge sauce, cold from fridge (Bad girl!)
6:30 pm 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese, chives, large peach, 10 oz skim milk, slice cherry crisp, 1/2 c vanilla ice cream

Those poles are very like the ones I have and love. Can you get them in time with rush shipping for Virginia?
Chicago trip was very nice. Once again, a hotel that was panned on TripAdvisor turned out to be perfectly adequate and actually quite nice. I had forgotten what the package included, but we had a tray waiting on our bed with a chilled bottle of ChocoVine and a small plate of strawberries cut into little roses. We got a certificate for their breakfast buffet which was basically scrambled eggs, with or without ham and cheese, hash browns, bacon or sausage, and French toast. The highlight of the trip was taking the L-train downtown to Frontera Grill for a wonderful dinner.
Checked out the Costco next to IKEA in Schaumburg as well as Mitsuwa.
Food:
8:45 am Scrambled eggs w/diced ham and cheese, 1/4 c hash browns, 1/3 blueberry bagel w/thin schmear, 2 pc bacon, 12 oz orange juice, coffee
1:00 pm 3 oz roast duck, 1/2 c ramen, 6 spears baby bok choy, 2 small scoops ice cream
3:00 pm 2 lemon sandwich cookies
5:00 pm 1/2 Neopolitan pizza w/parmadello ham, mozzarella cheese, tomato, and spinach
9:00 pm Large plum

Slept well, but it was hard to pry myself out of bed to exercise this morning. I suspect if I hadn't missed Sun and Wed mornings this week, I would have given in to the "I'm on vacation!" excuse today, but I'm proud that I did not.

Felt good to get a good night's sleep last night. Amazing how much you appreciate that when you miss a night. Looks like a beautiful night to hike tonight.
Heading down to Chicago tomorrow night for a night in a hotel purchased as a Living Social deal. I went on TripAdvisor and the reviews are not good so I guess I won't get my expectations too high. I'm looking forward to going to IKEA and Mitsuwa which are in the area, and I'm really looking forward to driving downtown in Chicago to have dinner Fri evening at Frontera Grill, the flagship casual restaurant for Rick Bayless, the Top Chef Masters winner from the first season. He supposedly trained the chefs at Cilantro in Madison where we recently ate. I was very impressed with his food on Top Chef as well as his style.

Fell asleep at the usual time last night with no problem, then woke in about 3 hours to go to the bathroom. After stumbling sleepily to the bathroom and back, I fell back in bed and couldn't fall back to sleep. This is very unusual for me. I took some ibuprofen which did help to relax the suddenly tighter muscles, but got up and went down to the couch for awhile in an effort to change the mental tape. Finally dozed off about an hour before the alarm back in my own bed. Went in to the bathroom to get ready for exercise and was dizzy, so decided to go back to bed for another hour of hopefully healing rest. It did seem to do some good as I was able to rest again and feel better now. It remains to be seen if I am tired later today.
My iPhone was out of commission for a couple of days, not receiving any signal. Helped to update the software. Still don't know what the original problem was, but as long as it works again, I really don't care.
Don't waste money trying Nairn's Oatcake Crackers. Similar to cardboard. Nothing like the oatcake crackers at Brennan's.
Wow, did the exhaustion hit mid- to late afternoon. By the time I got home, I just wanted to nap, but didn't happen. Chris Gaedtke was selling fresh-picked blueberries in Ral and Mary's front yard so I walked over to get some, then started the veggies roasting for supper. Just laid down and Geoff and Michele returned, so visited with them and then started the rest of supper. Dad had gotten fresh corn and Ski's brats and I made homemade hot fudge for cherry sundaes for dessert. By the time supper was done, they went for a little walk and I went to bed. Sweet sleep!
Food:
7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 143 g strawberries, coffee
12:00 pm Vanilla soy shake, 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese, chives, 2 Nairn's oatcake crackers, peach
3:30 pm Fiber One Oats & Chocolate granola bar
5:00 pm 1/2 c fresh blueberries
7:15 pm Chicken mushroom brat, 80 cal Wonder wheat bun, 1 tbl ketchup, 1/2 c roasted veggies (beets, fennel, carrots), 2 small/med cobs corn w/olive oil and seasoned salt, 2/3 c vanilla ice cream, 1/2 c cherries, 3 tbl hot fudge sauce

Really enjoyed relaxing last night. Amazing how much easier it is to sleep with the A/C fixed so your pajamas don't stick to you. Jordan seemed much happier, too. Let's hope this repair lasts longer than the last two times they came.

Yo ho, another week to go. Hopefully can hike tonight and either Wed or Thurs. Not tonight, I guess. Dad is consulting with Joan Karlen at 5 pm on updates to the heating and cooling systems at Jeanette & Ed's house (where Jack & Joan plan to move) and Barb is busy. I really should try to motivate to go to the gym. We'll see.
No oomph for the gym. Too relaxing to have the house to ourselves again and the A/C finally back in operation. Short nap on the couch and grilled the first corn of the season.
Food:
7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 134 g strawberries, coffee
11:45 am Strawberry/banana soy shake, 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese, chives, peach crisp
3:00 pm 1 Kopiko cappuccino hard candy
4:45 pm 2 c kettle corn
6:30 pm 5.1 oz extra lean ground beef, 80 cal Wonder wheat bun, 12 g asiago cheese, basil, 1 tbl ketchup, 1 ear corn, 1/2 tsp olive oil, 12 oz 1% milk
