Mon 31 Aug

Bad thing about eating all my food so close together and early in the day yesterday is that I woke up pretty hungry this morning. I really wasn't hungry yesterday evening though I did have to resist an urge to snack that wasn't hunger-induced. All during my morning workout today I found myself thinking about breakfast.

Thanks for the link to the Couch to 5K plan. I like a clearly outlined plan; it suits me. It should be a good addition to the hiking.

Sun 30 Aug

For some reason, ballet was harder than usual this morning. I won't be doing it next week because I'll be at the MN State Fair, so I don't suppose it will be any easier the following week. Oh, well.

Talked to Kathy Hartman, and she responded to my email:
"I am honored that Laura suggested me and would welcome a call from her friend. Married life MUST be such a change especially for a very young person. If her friend is comfortable, have her give me a call and I will keep a very open mind and listen with my heart.
So if you want to get the contact info for Katie to me, I'll pass it on to Kathy. If Katie would prefer to initiate contact, I can get you Kathy's email too, but it might be easier if Kathy calls her so she isn't too shy.

Oooh, lunch at Grandma's, then a full lunch reception following Ryan Zdroik's Eagle Scout ceremony. Grant you, it will be supper, but still a lot of food in a short period of time. Maybe we'll get a chance to get out for a walk this evening to wear some of it off.

Tried my first walk/run today. I think you told me to keep it to about a mile the first time to not overdo. Doesn't feel like it was very long, but best not to make it too much. I was pleased that running a block at a time didn't exhaust me because I'm sure it used to. Only took 10 min to do 7 cycles of walk-a-block, run-a-block which I believe is about a total of one mile. I'm up for advice if you think i should go farther or longer and how often I should go if I can.

Sat 29 Aug

Cool cloudy day today, predicted high of 56. The next few days are supposed to be sunny and 70ish. I miss the warm weather!

Hoping to get a handle on home cleaning/laundry, then head to Grandma's house to get some more clean-out progress. We cleaned most of the food out of the fridge Tues night til we filled up her garbage can. I'd like to get the rest of the once-edibles out of the kitchen area next, then get the cupboards and counter cleaned out to get that area ready before moving on to another room. I may change tactics once I start, but for now that's my plan. I don't plan to spend huge long chunks of time until I burn out, but will spread it over a period of time.

I will run it past Kathy to be sure she's willing, though I can't imagine she wouldn't be. I think it's an excellent idea. I'll send Kathy an email right away.

My coworker Tracy turns 50 today, and she is leaving us to take a different job at Lincoln Center in a couple of weeks. I have worked with her in several different places, and she always leaves to go elsewhere. I told her she's giving me a complex! She is really sweet and I wish her well.

Michael seems to be enjoying his job at Target so far. He was very psyched after orientation on Wed evening. I didn't have a chance to talk to him after his first training shift last night. Update: he isn't fond of cashiering, though he said he did fine. He hopes to work in the Food Alley more.

Today will be one of those high-sugar days. Oh, well.

Thurs 27 Aug

Just saw an article that children who consumed a lot of dairy products in childhood seem to have a lower risk of heart disease and a longer lifespan. You guys should live to a ripe old age with all the milk, yogurt, and cheese you had when you were little!

I met with a dietician with a client this week, and when I had a chance, I asked her about the protein/veggie/limited carbs diet you explained to me. She also expressed some concern with limiting any food group (such as good carbs) too much. I know you are quite conscious of good nutrition, but please keep an eye on this diet that you are getting an adequate balance of all nutrients as well as enhanced protein and veggies (which is great!) I love you and want you to be healthy.

Good point about the carbs in veggies - I tend to forget that. I should have known you wouldn't partake of a diet that wasn't sound. Sorry.

Went to a Lia Sophia jewelry party at Mary Gaedtke's. Haven't done a ladies' party for a long time.

Wed 26 Aug

Working with clients who profess to want to lose weight, I sometimes feel like a dietician/personal trainer along with being a social worker. I am constantly preaching nutrition, exercise, drinking enough water. Keeps me reminding myself as well.

Did a poor job on the veggies today; too late to dig some up at this point. Didn't even eat my usual amount of fruit. Oh well, tomorrow's another day.

Tues 25 Aug

Broke down and bought mocha chip muffins last night at the bakery part of the restaurant I visited with Grandma after her eye checkup. Added a light yogurt for some protein for breakfast, but made for a larger-than-usual meal. Shouldn't have to worry about being hungry mid-morning today.

Purchased egg rolls for Hmong New Years fundraiser. Thought they would be cold, ready-to-freeze, but they were hot and ready-to-eat so I indulged for lunch. I'll hopefully still be able to freeze most of the rest.

Rainy, icky afternoon put a damper on hiking plans for the evening.

Back home after taking a week off from fitness routines and food tracking. Hopefully I didn't do too much damage, and hopping back into routine will be enough to remind my body what it needs to do. Felt pretty good to exercise this morning and to eat familiar foods.

Ooooh, it felt good to hike today. Weather cleared up nicely and it was a perfect afternoon for some rocky and forested paths.

I haven't embraced the 6 meals a day protein/veggies yet, but I am trying to consciously eat some veggies more often.

Thurs 13 Aug

Helped Grandma to get packed yesterday. Called the hotel the other night and they said they don't have a handicapped room available for us, though I can continue to call to see if they have a cancellation. We might have Grandma carry the toilet seat riser in a tote bag on the plane; otherwise she'd probably have to buy one there and leave it behind. I'll try calling the hotel again and I'll certainly ask again at check-in. Hope it's not a problem (or I'll have to go into the bathroom with her every time to help her up!).

Slept in til 6 am this morning and it felt like heaven! Love that one day off during the week!

Michael has to wait 2 days for the drug test to come back from Target, then he should be hired to start when we get back from Richmond. He still has to retake (third time) the math accuplacer for MSTC. Hopefully he will get that done and pick up his textbooks soon. Textbooks are on the table - one hurdle down.

I was really tired this morning in spite of a decent night's sleep. If we don't hike tonight, I think I'll go to bed quite early to try to catch up a bit. It's probably a carryover from being tired at the end of last week. I probably should have taken a longer nap yesterday.

Hope you had fun at the ocean yesterday. Maybe you'll have recommendations for us for things to do, places to eat, etc. I expect we'll drive there one day just to see that part of the coast (and maybe get some good seafood!)

Actually got most of my clothes packed for Richmond last night so I don't have to worry about it during the week. I still hope to hike a couple days this week, and I'll need to get Grandma organized for the trip, so it's nice to get some chores out of the way. I'm getting excited.

Muscles were tired during workout this morning even though I wasn't excessively tired overall. Made it through most of the reps though.

Thurs 6 Aug

It was hard to get up this morning, possibly because I've gotten used to taking Thursday off from early morning exercise when I consistently do the Sunday ballet routine. Because I was in Door Co on Sunday morning and therefore didn't exercise, I had to go all five mornings during the week and my body wasn't too happy about it this morning. I'm okay now, though.

Wed 5 Aug

Felt the need for some extra computer downtime this morning before my shower, so I'm running a tad late now. It's delightful having guests, but it disrupts your routine and minimizes your "alone" time so somewhere you need to compensate.

Phil and Leigha came hiking with us at Rib in the evening, followed by sup at the Dane. Good times!

Food:

7:00 am 139 g cranberry orange scone, 1/2 c blueberries, coffee

Tues 4 Aug

Still enjoying my fresh-picked Door Co cherries and the yummy Michigan blueberries. Ah, fresh fruit season!

Phil and Leigha arrived mid-morning. I had stopped on the square for fresh veggies (and beautiful flowers!) so we had a nice fresh salad for lunch with Breadsmith bread. Made a casserole for supper as I figured they'd most crave homemade food after being on the road so long. And a cherry crisp with the fresh cherries - turns out they're Phil's favorite fruit.

Food:

7:00 am 1 c raisin bran, 1/2 c light vanilla soy milk, 1 c cherries, 1 c blueberries, coffee
11:00 am 1 c raspberries
11:45 am Romaine lettuce, 1/8 c blueberries, 1/8 c slivered almonds, 1/8 c green pepper, 1/8 c tomato, 1 tbl shredded cheddar, slice strawberry rhubarb bread, 1 tsp margarine, 12 oz light vanilla soy milk

Mon 3 Aug

Back to work for two full weeks, then Richmond and Laura! Hey, just realized you got your first paycheck last Friday. Congratulations! Helps you to feel like a real part of the work force once the paychecks start coming in.

Hope you're beginning to recover from the weekend's disturbed sleep schedule. Phil and Leigha are coming this week, most likely tomorrow. Will be nice to have them here for awhile. Haven't been successful in scouting out any day labor for them though.

I will definitely pass on the WWOOF info to Phil when they arrive. Good thought.

Spent the morning helping a man get admitted to the local mental health ward. He could not sit/stand/lay still for more than a couple of minutes during the inevitable waiting time in the ER, and I was having trouble staying awake.

I will check for the noodles in the freezer (I wrote myself a note). If I don't have any but can find some, I'll bring them if I can.
