Tues 31 May

Sitting in Kitty's kitchen over coffee watching the ever-present rain. Once again, no walk through the Portland neighborhoods. Missing my giant bowl of morning berries. Trying not to think what a long day this will be before we see the inside of our house some time after midnight tonight.

Took a drive with Bob and Suman to pick up scones to take home. Picked up a box of strawberries and scarfed down half to satisfy the fruit craving.

Food:

8:00 am. 6 mini-biscotti, coffee
9:45 am. 6 extra large strawberries

Sat 28 May

Feeling better after a good night's sleep. Hoping to last through the day for a change. Had Suman's hot cross bun from Easter for breakfast frozen to order for me.

Food:

8:00 am. Hot cross bun, coffee

Fri 27 May

Better to have gotten some sleep, but still will be happy when the cold is history. I really think I would have loved that restaurant last night, but by the time we got there, I only wanted to sleep.

Food:

8:30 am. Oatmeal spelt scone, large pear, coffee

Thurs 26 May

Getting up at 2:00 am is weird. Sitting around with Dad and Michael conversing over breakfast at 3:00 am is also weird. Heading out to a weekend in Portland with my whole family: priceless!

Wed 25 May

Wow, I really did not want to get out of bed this morning. It was a major effort of will to get up and exercise. I wasn't particularly sore or even sleep-deprived, it just felt so good to be sleeping that I didn't want to stop. But rise I did, and now I feel virtuous.

Employee recognition staff meeting this morning, as usual followed by little mini-muffin reception.

Tues 24 May

Weirdness. I can't sign in to the blog on Safari today. I get the screen to verify my password and it won't take, and the default to deal with it is not a valid web address. I had to go in to Firefox where the verification screen accepted my password immediately (as usual).

Expecting to pick you up on Thurs morning at your apartment, hopefully between 6:00-6:15 am. Please confirm that this will work for you.

I was able to fix my access via Safari this noon so I'm back to normal again.

We can pick you up at your apartment so you don't have to bring your stuff on the bus.

Oops, maybe a few too many sweets today.

Good old Mary Hofer! I think she adjusted my back and finally got the kink out of it. She thinks it's a little piece that connects into the backbone that often slips out of place with little provocation and causes pain and trouble breathing until it resolves. She laid me on the floor and worked my back til it cracked out.

Food:

7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 1/4 large cantaloupe, coffee

Mon 23 May

Short work week ahead and vacation - yay! Hope you have the opportunity to recharge your batteries a bit before Thursday.

Busy morning, one appointment right after another. Afternoon looks to be much of the same. Will see what the weather is doing at the end of the day to determine whether or not to hike.

When I got home from work, the sky was full of dark clouds and a storm felt imminent. Now it is 6 pm and the sun is shining brightly. Just waited for us to decide not to hike and it immediately cleared up. Oh well, I was tired today and I really should start getting things together for Oregon since the next two days will likely be busy.

Had a nice little weekend getaway to Green Bay, but was disappointed because their nice farmer's market doesn't start til the first weekend of June. I was hoping to find some good homegrown herb plants to get my herb garden started. I suppose I'll end up buying them at the Fleet Farm or Kmart garden market instead. Oh well.

Hope you are having a good time (and maybe getting a little sleep) at Anime Central. Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Fri 20 May

Since Baraboo so rudely held their street fair last weekend without telling me, we will go to Green Bay instead for a short getaway. We will leave this afternoon and do a wine tasting at Captain's Walk and dinner at St. Brendan's before staying there overnight. Tomorrow we'll do the Green Bay farmer's market and a walk along the river, weather permitting.

I was still pretty sore from the new DVD yesterday, so Power Shaping is a gentler yet active workout that moved the muscles without adding insult to injury, I hope.

Really awesome dinner special at St. Brendan's.

Thurs 19 May

I bought a new video using ballet/Pilates/yoga methods to tone. Did it for the first time this morning and my legs are singing. No cardio aspect, but so many reps using tight muscle tone that core, buns and legs are exhausted. There's even a little weight work for upper body to keep balance. I expect the calorie burn isn't huge, but it's a good workout.

Intake was slow this morning so I used the time to clean up some very old piles of papers in my office. Looking forward to working in a less cluttered environment.

Taking Grandma to the eye doctor in Wausau later this afternoon.

Wed 18 May

Hoping to have nice weather for hiking tonight since it's the first night this week with time. If it rains, it's the gym. I feel badly that I have not been getting to the gym twice weekly for 2-3 weeks now, and last week I didn't get there at all when I was on call. Time to get back in the groove before sloth becomes habitual.

Bake sale at work. I'm substituting a couple of reasonable treats for my lunch scone. Got hungry at the end of the afternoon and had to indulge in the last of the bake sale treats.

Tues 17 May

Happy Syttende Mai! (I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled and I'm too lazy to look it up.) My Norwegian coworker, Brad, will be excited about it. Speaking of coworkers, I'm having dinner at Hilltop tonight with Deb Pierce, Bill Pyke, and Deb Richmond. I haven't seen Richmond in many years. She started two weeks before I did (33 years ago), then moved on after 10 years to go back to school for her school counselor degree. She's been working up in Wausau for most of the years since graduation, but we rarely ever run in to her. Bill made a chance contact so we set up a reunion dinner tonight.

Yup, that's the correct holiday. Looks like my spelling was even fairly accurate. Brad appreciates his Norwegian heritage and is always happy when someone honors it.

Reunion dinner was a blast! Great to see someone you haven't seen for about 20 years who hasn't changed a bit.

I have a mutant grapefruit this morning. It has two centers like a Siamese twin that didn't separate. Sort of pretty. I wonder if it's an omen to an unusual day.

Sun 15 May

At present, we have sunshine with some clouds off in the west. We'll see if Fr. Tom's promise of nice weather for the Newman Picnic holds up. He seemed to begrudge the beautiful day we had for Mother's Day (and First Communion), promising it would be just as nice next week for the picnic. We'll see.

Yesterday I envisioned a table-height apparatus for planting an herb garden that won't get mowed down or spread into the lawn. Dad found a plan on the Internet and built me the frame so now we just need to get dirt and plants. Hopefully this will work. I've tried herb gardens by the back door or in pots, but I've never been successful. I'd like to have fresh herbs accessible for cooking.

Watched The Two Towers last night. Not sure when I'll find time for Return of the King. May have to split it over two nights.

Sunshine held for the picnic, if a tad windy. Yummy lunch.

Over my calorie limit for the day today. Oops.

Sat 14 May

So far, a blessedly quiet week on the pager. Makes me feel more relaxed every time I realize this. I also had a pretty relaxing week at work. The woman who has been driving me especially crazy lately really only spent any time with me on Tuesday and didn't call several times daily (or at all) the rest of the week. No wonder I feel more relaxed!

No plans today other than laundry, paying bills, since I need to stay close to home on call. I had planned to take a lamb shank out of the freezer and try something interesting for supper. I think I'll still try to take it out at 8:15 am and hope I can coax it to thaw enough to do something. I'm thinking about braising it with those parsnips I bought, some potatoes and carrots, yum! If it doesn't thaw completely, I may be able to braise it partly frozen. I may also check the crock pot cookbook for options as I could throw it in the crock pot frozen.

Watched all my Sherlock episodes again this week. Couldn't go hiking so I watched more TV. I'm so ready for them to make three more!

Hey, Stevens Point gets bragging rights over Madison! http://www.wisconsinoutdoorfun.com/article/20110514/WOF02/305140074&located=rss

I have the leftover butternut squash with a little parsnip and Vidalia onion simmering to make a small batch of soup for lunch. This is an excellent chance to dig out the immersion blender once it has simmered down a bit.

Oh, my goodness! The butternut/parsnip soup is awesome! Just right for a cool day.

And the lamb shank was very good, although the shiraz overpowered everything which somewhat surprised me.

Fri 13 May

Happy Friday the 13th! This week is going by quickly, always nice for an on-call week. Hope to go out to Clancy's for fish tonight. Trying hard to eat sensibly within calorie limits. I do not like that I am now 10 pounds up from where I last lost weight. I can tell that my clothes don't fit as well and there are paunches where there should be none. I have been keeping up exercise well, so it seems I have just laxed off too much on the food. Sigh.

Tues 10 May

Gray-looking skies out there. I guess it's what we get for the next few days. My scale was up a pound today, but I'm hoping it's just a reflection of the sodium in the chicken sausage from yesterday's supper. I'd like to think it isn't the 5 Fiesta eggs I snacked on before dinner. I kept my calories in the middle of my range in spite of the eggs, so I hope it goes back down when the sodium washes out.

Damn Sir Ian and his sense of drama! He had me scared when he said Martin Freeman had left The Hobbit, but he actually was the bearer of very good news in that Martin has only left temporarily to go make three more Sherlock episodes. I eagerly await the next batch.

Oh, my goodness, I opened the first package of lamb chops from the butcher and they look amazing! I hope I do them justice. I have decided to grill them, but first I am allowing them to sit with a mixture of salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, basil, garlic flakes, Vidalia onion, and a touch of white wine. It is taking all my patience (and a glass of the remaining wine) to wait a bit for the lamb to absorb flavor from the spices before I grill them.

They was yummers!

What a lovely sunny day! Originally they had forecast clouds and some showers, so this is a lovely surprise. Maybe the showers forecast for tomorrow afternoon will hold off long enough to get an after-work hike at Rib in. I go on call again Tuesday for a week so tomorrow is the only chance. They're forecasting thunderstorms the rest of the week, so hopefully I won't feel I'm missing much.

Thanks for the Mother's Day wishes! I think Grandma had a nice day, too. We took her to brunch, and we paid for her memory foam mattress topper as well as giving her a potted Gerbera daisy, a folk art wooden chicken door decoration, some pecan rolls and a chocolate bar.

A nice nap is such a pleasant thing on a Sunday afternoon!

Sat 7 May

Getting excited for the Cultural Fest today, though I did have to drag myself out of bed this morning when a lie-in seemed to be calling my name.

Hope you're on track for your finals/projects and not tearing your hair out. Except for the year in Virginia, this has pretty much been the rhythm of your life as long as you likely remember. Every May and December are filled with finals and crunch time. Strange how that is just a memory once/if you leave the world of academia.

Many good noshes at the Cultural Fest, and take-homes of kettle corn, Linda's hot cross buns, and chocolate chip brioche from the French bakery.

Took care of odious bill paying and got all the laundry done, so I believe I have a free evening!

Fri 6 May

It's so weird to start work for the week on Thursday. My mind knows it's Friday, but my psyche feels like Tuesday. Good problem to have overall. Supposed to be a lovely, sunny day so Dad and I will hike Rib after work tonight. Tomorrow is the Cultural Festival, so my resolve to try to eat sensibly will be stressed. I will severely limit breakfast and dinner on Saturday so that I can enjoy the goodies at the Cultural Fest. We're taking Grandma to brunch at Michele's on Sunday, but I can usually do okay if I put my mind to it at a brunch.

Wed 4 May

Our time in Door Co has passed very quickly in spite of less t Han optimal weather. Of course, thanks to Mr. Murphy and his ubiquitous law, it's beautifully sunny and promises to be 15 degrees warmer today when we have to leave. We plan to drive home through Algoma to see if we can do a wine tasting at Von Stiehl. They bottle the Naughty Girl and also a nice white Oktoberfest. I hope to stop at St. Brendan's in Green Bay for a late lunch, and maybe we'll sneak in a walk on the river trail before turning for home.

The 4th will be with you.....always!

We have a whole lamb, butchered into lovely cuts, in our freezer. Now for the time to prepare and eat it all in a timely fashion.

Tues 3 May

Yesterday was a very nice and restful day even if it was quite a bit cooler and damper than I had hoped. At least it didn't rain. The hike was nice, but I did have an unfortunate incident where my hiking pole, my foot, and a large branch made a triangle that resulted in me kissing the dirt. I do have a little bruise on my leg today where the pole trapped it. The joys of hiking.

We did a wine tasting at Stone's Throw in Bailey's Harbor today. We had an amazing cab, but at $65/bottle, we didn't bring any home.

Food:

8:15 am. Hard boiled egg, chocolate cake donut, coffee
9:00 am. 1/2 pc raspberry coffee cake, oatmeal with blueberries, granola, raisins, brown sugar, skim milk, coffee
12:30 pm. Wine tasting

3:30 pm. A bit of chocolate bunny
5:30 pm. 5 oz sparkling cherry wine
6:45 pm. 4 oz pot roast, 1/4 c beef gravy, 1/2 c boiled potatoes. 1/2 c boiled baby carrots
8:15 pm. 8 oz hot cocoa

We are ensconced in Door Co. Had a very nice dinner last night at the newly remodeled Cooper's Corner in Fish Creek. Off to the White Gull soon for breakfast. Had a peeled hard-boiled egg and a small glass of OJ at the hotel to take the edge off the morning hunger.
