Grandma is 92 today! I'm going to try to stop by her apartment quickly before we leave today to personally wish her a Happy Birthday. I also had a change of plans this morning in that I found out last night that Kathy Hartman's dad finally succumbed to his advanced Alzheimer's Tues night. The funeral is this morning at 11 am in Port Edwards, so I am going to do my best to get there. It may mean a later-than-anticipated start from Point, but we'll get to Reedsburg as soon as we can. Do call around noon to let us know where you are. It's good that you have a place to hang out if we're a few minutes later than planned.
Skipped exercise and slept in this morning. My muscles have been sore the last couple of days, likely due to resurrecting an old strength training DVD that used some muscles in different ways. I used to take a day off occasionally to allow sore muscles to rest, and it seemed like a good idea today in spite of the prospect of a long time in the car. I may regret the choice later today.
The morning was quite rushed, having to cancel an appointment and rush through the earlier ones to attend Kathy's dad' funeral. Then I rushed home and had to drop off the pager at work and pick up my phone which I had left on the charger in my office. I thought I'd have to tear out of the house to stop at Grandma's and head down to Reedsburg, but Dad said you won't be there til 4 or 5 so I can finally relax a few minutes. It means we'll have to have our dinner tonight in Madison likely and get into the hotel in Chicago quite late - oh, well.

Scale at 127.4 today, continuing in the slightly more acceptable range. Approaching the weekend, I need to be a little more reasonable in selection of foods. I know how to do it, I just have to do it.
Our section is responsible for the bake sale at work today. Did a double batch of plain rice krispie treats because I've been hungry for them. One krispie treat isn't too hard on the diet so I won't be as tempted to indulge in something worse.

Scale was back to 128.0 today, in the range it had been keeping most recently. I could wiggle my ring on my finger this morning so I'm hoping reduced humidity will mean more normal readings, and conversely that the depressingly high numbers were more about water retention. Of course when I was maintaining around 125, today's reading would have been for high water retention so I still have some work to get back where I want to be.
If today is your "setting out" day, please be careful and drive safely. Don't overdo with the lifting for packing in the heat; take your time. Enjoy the ride. Looking forward to seeing you in a couple of days!
I have a client who loves to go to Colligan's for donuts when we meet. They don't really have much in lower cal alternatives and it feels rude not to eat with her.
So tired today; maybe that donut started a bad sugar roll.

Scale was a little less today - 130.2 - but I'm not going to be happy until it's consistently well under 130. I want to get back to the vicinity of 125 where I was holding steady before the cruise. That seemed to be a good weight, fitting into my clothes well. I'm not really noticing too much difference now, but I've been the route before of going up a little at a time, then gradually more and more. I really don't want to see that happen again. Granted the last time it happened, I had slacked back on my exercising and I haven't done that this time. Problem is I just enjoy food a lot. I like the stuff that's good for me, but I also like the stuff that isn't.

I need to start being more careful yet. These weekend getaways when I allow myself not to keep track of foods and to eat more treats than I know are good for me are taking their toll. It's been too easy to blame higher scale readings on the high humidity and water retention. I think I'm eating well and exercising well most days, but the scale is definitely creeping up. Today was 132.2! Past experience has shown that once I creep over that 130 mark, it tends to pick up pace in the increases. I have nudged just over 130 a time or two before, but always been back down under again within a day or two. Hopefully this will again be the case as it's not unusual to fluctuate two pounds or more in a few days. Usually just a weekend occasionally of indulging doesn't cause permanent damage if I hop back into routine right away.
Congrats on selling the car. Who'd you sell it to?

I'm not too worried about picking blueberries since we bought a case of the Michigan variety at the Green Bay farmer's market. We weren't able to pick cherries due to the Saturday on and off (mostly on) rain, but we bought a bag equivalent to a 5-quart pail. We also got a few fresh apricots and some nice lettuce from the farmer's market. We ran into Fr. Tom in the Seaquist Orchards store in Door Co.
Today was sunny and beautiful so we walked along the river path in Green Bay. This time we found a Walgreen's and bought sunscreen before we went out. See, even old people are capable of learning!
Now I'm home and feeling quite wiped out. Going to read awhile before bed. Really looking forward to having you home in less than a week. Expect you're looking forward to Wisconsin's 80-degree temps over Virginia' 105.

Speaking of blueberries, I'm looking forward to getting some more fresh Michigan blueberries this weekend, either at the Green Bay farmer's market or at the Main St Market in Egg Harbor. We bought two large boxes last time we were in Green Bay and they put the grocery store variety to shame. Do Keaton's folks raise their own?
Very much looking forward to going to St Brendan's Inn in Green Bay and picking cherries in Door Co (weather permitting) this weekend. It's been a somewhat frustrating week with difficult people so I'm looking forward to leaving the office behind at 3 pm. The weather forecast looks a bit more promising today than it did yesterday. It might not even rain today!

I keep forgetting to ask, but when will you want to move in to the Madison apartment. The 15th is a Sunday, so I wondered if it might be available on Saturday to start the move-in? If we aren't going til Sunday morning, we need to sign up to work a shift at the choir brat fry on Saturday, but I've been holding off til I know the other plans. Also, do you know what time you'll be in Madison on Fri, Jul 30 and where we should plan to meet you?
Thanks for the update. I assume we don't need to be down in Madison by noon then, so we won't plan to leave here until at least lunch time. Do you anticipate you'd be in Madison before early evening? We do have reservations in Chicago so I hope to get there at a sort of reasonable hour.

Looks to be a lovely sunny day today - hoping for a nice hike after work.
Jordan has been doing his hot summer poop-on-the-rug at the foot of the stairs routine again lately. We are trying a plastic vinyl mat covering the area after every pet odor product fails to deter him. When we set it down, he laid on it for awhile. We'll see if it keeps him from pooping there. If not, it will at least be easier to clean up.
I will take your peanut butter advice to heart next time I'm shopping. Actually I just bought the Skippy Natural because they had a really super sale on Skippy but they were all out of the regular creamy so this was the next closest thing. I'll look for the 365 brand locally, maybe at Woodman's.
Food:
7:15 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 98 g blackberries, 1/4 med cantaloupe, coffee

Welcome back Stateside, jet lag and all. Let us know you had a safe journey, and any photos of your adventure would be wonderful to share.
Our day with Grandma yesterday went well - I think we probably wore her out. She was very glad to get out. We did the Baraboo zoo, lunch at the Log Cabin, drive through Devil's Lake park (which was just about packed to capacity on a beautiful, sunny Saturday). We took the back route from Devil's Lake to Madison through some small towns we'd never seen (Lodi, Springfield) and rode a ferry across the Wisconsin River that we hadn't known existed. We explored (and joined) the new Costco store in Madison so now we, too, are card-carrying LeGaults with Costco. We spent so much time there that we just ran to Woodman's and TJ's for our usual supplies, then took Grandma to Monty's for dinner. Dad wanted an Apple keyboard like mine, so we quickly ran in to the Apple store at WestTowne before heading home.
Grandma really enjoyed the zoo, and we had planned to try to get to the Madison zoo if we hadn't spent too much time at Costco. I told her we would try to get her down to Madison before the end of the year to take in that zoo, maybe after you return there, and perhaps you would join us for zoo and dinner. We'll have to see if we can work it out.
Glad you're back; sorry travel was less than fun. Will wait for report.

Safe travels today as you wrap up your European adventure. I hope you had a wonderful time. Enjoy your last short time in Richmond checking out any spots you enjoyed before you bid it a final goodbye. We are most anxious to welcome you home on Jul 30!
My brain is foggy this morning for some reason. I awoke from a weird dream that Michael was running away. There was a taxi waiting to take him away that looked like a Barbie cab complete with statuesque blond driver; he was carrying a black-and-white child's suitcase and my dad's old bowling bag, and he was reluctant to say where he was going. I woke up at that point. Weird.

Looks like another lovely day. Dad and I plan to hike tonight, whether or not Barb is free to join us. I actually chose to sleep in this morning as long as I will hike tonight - felt wonderful.
Tomorrow promises to be sunny, hot, and humid for the day we are taking Grandma out and about. This rather precludes walking around a zoo or the unshaded path at Devil's Lake, so we're thinking we'll take her to lunch at the Log Cabin in Baraboo, then drive around the area and down to Madison to take in the Arboretum. They have a Visitor Center with some exhibits and at least a better chance of shade. If it's really too hot for her, we may end up in a mall for awhile. Still a change of scenery for her.
Ah, what an awesome evening for a hike! And looking forward to a Great Dane burger the whole time made it that much more enjoyable.

Hope you enjoyed your Bastille Day festivities, culminating with fireworks. Sounds like a blast!
I figured out today that I could get up at the regular time and still leave half an hour early as long as I did one of the 30-min exercise videos. Tried one I hadn't yet done before and it was very good.
Conference at Kalahari today. Best conference lunch I can remember - the curried cous cous w/veggies was excellent, as were the freshly steamed veggies and teriyaki chicken.

Celebrating Bastille Day in France - what fun! Hope you're having a great time!
Supposed to be warm and eventually stormy later today. We have the Galapagos webinar tonight at 7 pm so we won't be outside anyway, but I hope we don't get the severe storms they're threatening to take down the power so we can't use the computer. Likely not.
Had a bad snacking afternoon at the staff meeting; haven't done that for awhile. Oh, well, now it's back to sensible eating.
6 pm tornado warnings for the county, though a little east of town. Storm sirens did go off and it's raining and thundering but doesn't feel imminently on top of us.
Supper was quite yummy. I had intended to grill chicken and pineapple, but due to the stormy weather, I opted to stir fry and include our first homegrown pepper. I snagged a zucchini at work this week - someone had brought in surplus - so that was sauteed, and we topped it off with brown rice. Nummers!
Food:
7:15 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 87 g blackberries, coffee
12:00 pm Vanilla soy shake, 1 c chicken stew (from Great Dane), med peach, berry mixture (blue, black, strawberries)
1:45 pm 1/2 c trail mix, 12 mini-pretzels
3:45 pm Lofthouse iced sugar cookie

Looks like another nice sunny day, and much more pleasant now that the humidity has moderated. Wisconsin is still nice and green thanks to all the rain, though we could use a little less wet stuff for just a little while so things can dry out to normal.
We're going to take Grandma on a day trip next Saturday, probably to Baraboo, just to get her out and about. It's too hard to do overnights any more at this point, but a day trip should be manageable. Let's hope the weather is nice so we can take her to the zoo and/or to Devil's Lake.
Food:
7:15 am 1 c Kashi GOLEAN cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 86 g blackberries, 1/4 large cantaloupe, coffee
12:00 pm Chocolate soy shake, 2 slices Sara Lee Delightful 45 cal whole wheat bread, 2 slices fat free turkey, 99 g homegrown tomato, medium peach
3:15 pm 1 lemon puffy mint, 100 cal pack Sun Chips, 2 wintergreen Canada mints
6:15 pm 4 homegrown raspberries
6:30 pm 1 Trig's smokehouse brat, 1 Milwaukee brat bun, 1 tbl ketchup, 117 g grilled pineapple, 1/2 tbl peanut sauce (peanut butter, soy sauce, sricha chili sauce, fresh mint), 1/2 c diced Yukon potaotes, chopped scallion, baby garlic, 1/4 tbl butter, 3/4 c watermelon chunks

I could still feel some muscle soreness during ballet as a remnant of the Friday workout. My thighs had been sore all day yesterday going up and down stairs to do laundry, so I was expecting the burn today. I also haven't hiked all week because of being on call (as well as rainy weather). I'm sure if we're able to get out on Tuesday, my legs will feel the hills!
I imagine things were pretty wild in Spain this afternoon (or whatever time it was there). Must have been fun to watch the match in the company of people who were totally invested in the outcome. Hope you managed to avoid being trampled or getting too drunk.

8:15 am 1 c Kashi GOLEAN cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 81 g fresh blueberries
11:45 am Belgian waffle, 1/8 c pecans, 3/4 c blueberries in light glaze, 2 eggs, 8 oz orange juice, coffee

Your hotel looks lovely. Waking to roosters and the sea - how perfect! A tad quieter than Pamplona, I would expect. Paul the octopus has picked Spain for the World Cup, so if his record holds, you should have a pretty wild time with the locals on Sunday. If not, expect octopus on the menu at the restaurants that night!
Another lovely day here, so I should be able to hang out all my laundry today. We slept without A/C last night, and it was only a little bit humid. Very nice to have the cooler, fresh air. I'm on call this weekend so we probably won't stray really far from home - no last-minute trips to Madison or Appleton. I'm hesitant to hike Rib lest I get a call requiring a personal response when I'm an hour up the hill, but I just might chance it if the weather is so beautiful and I get chores done. We'll see.
I'll be glad when I finish this box of Kashi cereal and can go back to my Trader Joe's in good conscience. It was good to try something different, but I definitely prefer my Trader Joe's.
Yummy supper tonight - pork chops grilled with a rub including fresh sage, fresh beets and carrots pan-fried in olive oil with cumin and beet greens, baked sweet potato, topped off with a Central Waters beer.
Food:
8:45 am 1 c Kashi GOLEAN cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 100 g blueberries, coffee
12:45 pm 2 pc Sara Lee Blueberry Crumble bread as French toast, 2 tsp soft margarine, 1/4 med honeydew
3:00 pm Half brownie, 32 oz iced peppermint sun tea
4:30 pm Peach
6;00 pm 4.35 oz pork chop, 2/3 c fresh beets, 1/3 c fresh carrots, 1 tbl olive oil for cooking, 1/2 large sweet potato, 1 tsp soft margarine, 12 oz Central Waters Shine On beer
7:30 pm 1/2 c Edy's Slow-Churned Light vanilla ice cream, 12 oz A&W diet root beer

Hope the running is exciting but you don't have to witness any more gorings. I think they've had enough already this year.
Forgot to mention that Mama Kluck works at Adventure 212. She says hi.
Had a little heart-pumping moment during exercise. A June bug! crawled across the floor of the basement while I was exercising. Unfortunately for dad, this constituted a sufficient reason to roust him at 5:20 am as I do not deal with June bugs at any time of day.
Wow, St. Sebastian sounds awesome. Does your 4-star hotel have a website so I can have an envy attack for real?
Tonight's supper: cheese fries and fresh salad with a full-length DVD on the Galapagos with National Geographic.

Sounds like you're having a good time in France, with plenty of opportunity to sample the local wares. I'll be anxious to hear about Barcelona. I opened Yahoo before Twitter this morning and got a little panicky reading about gorings and serious injuries in Pamplona. I hoped none of them were anyone in your party. I was happier when I opened Twitter and saw that you were still in Bordeaux 5 hours before.

I dropped off the duathlon registration at Adventure 212 yesterday, so you get a free 2-week trial of their facilities which will give you something to do while you're in Point. I also had a tour and it's really a beautiful facility. They have separate areas for cardio machines and weight machines (though the weight area has a couple of ellipticals, I suppose so you can do circuit work if you choose without moving to another part of the building). They have a dry sauna, hot tub with a view, warm pool for water exercise. There is a nice little bistro serving breakfast and lunch - maybe I'll meet you there one day and we can nosh together. The free pass allows you and a friend, so maybe I'll get to come once or twice and try out a Pilates class or something, too.

Today is rainy and gray, but hey, it's a day off from work! We had our lovely walk in the sunshine on Saturday. Got most of my laundry done yesterday, so today may just be a relaxing day. Been a while since I've had one of those, though I did my share of relaxing yesterday afternoon/evening watching a Galapagos promotional video from Lindblad Expeditions and the last DVD of the finale of Top Chef New York.
Good thing I planned to just wake up on my own and exercise when I woke up rather than getting up at a specific early hour to exercise today. We had a power outage from sometime after 4:30 am until about 7:50. Wouldn't have been able to have light or fan in the basement, much less run the video/DVD player and TV. As it was, I got up shortly after 8:00 and did the exercise thing before breakfast. I anticipate that will be my routine if/when I ever get to retire - getting up on my own clock but still exercising first thing.
Afternoon has brought on nasty stomach gas. Unfortunate.
Food:
10:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 158 g fresh strawberries, coffee

3:45 pm 1 Godiva chocolate
6:00 pm 4.2 oz pan-fried catfish in cornmeal, 1/3 c steamed Swiss chard, 1/2 c Yukon Gold new potatoes brushed w/olive oil, 12 oz light vanilla soy milk, Ghirardelli brownie
Exercise:

As it was, I got up shortly after 8:00 and did the exercise thing before breakfast. I anticipate that will be my routine if/when I ever get to retire - getting up on my own clock but still exercising first thing.
Afternoon has brought on nasty stomach gas. Unfortunate.

Happy Fourth of July! So glad to hear you are safe, hopefully having an awesome time. Enjoy Paris!
Was too tired when I got home last night to do an entry for Saturday. Had a very nice time in Green Bay, and the Star Wars concert was everything I had hoped it would be. It was narrated by Anthony C-3PO Daniels who seems a delightful and pleasant man. They used the projection screen clips to basically give a condensed version of the entire saga in segments, some chronological, some character-based. It was very well done and the music was fantastic. We saw Tom Yang in the parking lot on the way out, so we're not the only local Star Wars geeks apparently.
We loved the St. Brendan's Inn, an Irish B&B with restaurant where we had dinner Friday night. We made reservations for Fri/Sat Jul 23-24 for a really good getaway package they offer including two nights in a lovely room with a whirlpool tub, breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelettes each morning, and a dinner for two one evening, all for $199. We wanted to pick cherries in Door Co around that time, so we will run out to the peninsula after breakfast Saturday morning and return in time for our dinner that evening. I'm sure we would pay more money for less amenities on the peninsula.
Weather was lovely in Green Bay, sunny and breezy off the Fox River. Saturday started out around 73° but heated up well into the 80s by afternoon. Dad and I had the great breakfast at Hotel Sierra where we stayed and then went to their farmers market in the morning. We then drove back to St. Brendan's where we got a small tour of the facility and made our reservations as above, then left the car in the public lot and took a 2 1/4 hour walk along the river path southwards. Unfortunately we had not packed sunscreen, so we're both a tad pink today. Last night the temps stayed warm all night; it was 73 when I looked at the thermometer just before 7 am. There are possible storms in the forecast for the next several days.

Bon voyage! Not sure what time you're leaving - you're probably already at the airport - but have a wonderful trip and tons o' fun! Take pictures and send word when you get a chance so we can follow your fun.
Well, it's nice that you don't have to rush this morning, having just finished your last day of work (hooray!) yesterday. Gives you time to make sure you have the things you expect to need. Eat a good breakfast before heading to the airport as the quality of travel food is less than desirable. Maybe you'll even have time for a workout before all the airport/plane sitting.
Been thinking about you all morning and where you are in your travels. I expect by now (12:22 CDT), you are sitting in JFK waiting for your next flight. Hope all is going according to plans.
