Thurs 30 Jun

Beautiful night for hiking yesterday. Had a post-hike bison burger on the terrace at Great Dane. Short an hour of sleep which I can feel today, but slept like a rock for the time I did get. Looking forward to planning the trip. I will probably look for a nice hotel rather than B&Bs due to cost, but I will look for B&B options that might be in range. I'm also exploring VRBO rentals in the area.

Peaches come today!

Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper with banana vanilla rum is a very interesting combination.

I am checking out a few VRBO options. I'll probably email you the links to get your opinion, but not tonight. Too tired.

I love summer. So nice to get up and see sunshine and be warm. I do think it might be a bit beyond just warm this weekend, but bring it on.

Tues 28 Jun

Just saw a banner ad for Chicago ComicCon 2011; will you be working for that?

Yesterday was a disaster day for eating. Sue the nurse's 50th birthday meant buffet lunch at Tempura House followed by ice cream at King Kone (newly opened in the old Sassy Brass). We took Michael (and tagalong Grandma) up to Wausau to get his new phone and ate at Olive Garden. I tried to pick an entree to split with Grandma that I thought would be on the healthy side - a pasta with grilled shrimp and a garlic/olive oil sauce - but when they brought me the requested nutrition info booklet, it was 990 calories, 54 g fat, and 2990 g sodium! Yikes! Think I'll try to avoid much food today and up the exercise ante.

On the good side, Barb said they're considering doing another month of the Tues night Pilates classes.

Wow, just peeked briefly at your European hiking adventure plan! Looks incredible!

Had a very good Pilates class, but talked with Joan afterward about Uncle Ed. He had a very major stroke and will not recover according to doctors. He is currently receiving comfort care and they expect the end within a week. We'll keep you posted.

Lacking in energy this morning. Woke up at midnight to pee and really felt the soreness from biking/hiking this weekend. Had to take 2 ibuprofen 20 min later to fall back to sleep without aching. Suspect that all contributed to lack of feeling rested in the morning. Might go up to Wausau this evening with Michael if he wants to so he can get a new phone. Apparently I'm due to get a new one on the account, and as I'm still happy with my iPhone, I'm glad to let him get a new one instead. You may recall he took his good phone swimming last summer so he's been using one of the old phones ever since.

Sat 25 Jun

What a beautiful day, and a Saturday to boot! Getting ready to hang my sheets on the line. May squeeze in the hike we didn't do last night. And I have one of the lamb roasts thawed and ready for the rotisserie for this evening. I left a message for Hartmans, but since I haven't heard back, I assume they're out of town. Would have been too fortuitous for both of us to have a free summer Saturday night on the same weekend, I guess.

Nice little ride on the Wilshire loop, just an hour but that's all my tender bottom wanted for the first ride in quite a long time.

Oops, over the calorie limit by a little bit today. Hope the bike ride offset it a bit.

Fri 24 Jun

Seems so strange that it's already Friday when I just got back to work yesterday. But I'll take it. Hoping for decent evening weather so we could get up to Rib to hike since we didn't get as much as we had hoped at the North Shore.

It's about $100 per person cheaper to fly from Madison to Richmond. We'd be renting a car anyway, so it doesn't look that far to drive. I could get a flight on 8/11 leaving Madison at 8 am and getting in to Richmond at 1 pm.

Weather was great but Dad got home late and was too tired to hike. I ended up having to take tests on Word and Internet Explorer for the new job application. Found out what features of each I had never used and managed to figure out most things.

Time to get back in the flow. Woke up with a bit of a sore back this morning. Wish I had you to do the shoulder massage thing to put it back to rights. Maybe I can corner Michael if he comes in at lunch time. Dad just has never been able to learn how to do it right.

Scale was predictably even worse than before I left. I really need to get this trend into reverse now.

CHANGE OF POTENTIAL VACATION DATES: Can you do the vacation to Virginia either the week of Jul 31-Aug 6 or Aug 14-20? There is a State meeting for potential retirees in Stevens Point on Wed Aug 10 which I feel I need to attend in case I need to mobilize the retirement plan by Oct 1 when our last union contract ends. We could also look at Aug 2-9 or 11-18 if those dates would be more convenient. Let me know.

Believe it or not, I may be applying for a new job. After only 3 years - 10% of the time I spent on the last job. There is an opening for an Information and Assistance Specialist at the Aging and Disability Resource Center. This position is currently in our union which includes some positions at the ADRC, nursing home, and other county offices. I have always been somewhat interested in this position and thought I might consider it when one became available. I will apply and interview; I won't need to make a decision until/unless I am offered the position. Since our contract is still in operation, I stand a good chance of being the most senior person to apply and I can't see how they could find fault with my qualifications so I expect I have a very good chance of being offered the position. Time will tell.

Thank you for letting us know the bus victim wasn't you. You tend to have scary things happen far too close to you. First the girl murdered in her apartment a block away, now this. Yikes!

Had a great little vacation at the North Shore, though a plethora of raindrops Tues and Wed. We got a shorter hike in Tues morning for about 1 1/2 hours, then drove up to Thunder Bay just for fun. This morning we didn't get the early morning pre-drive hike as it was raining very steadily from the middle of the night on. Ate too much and exercised less than I should have, though we got a very good hike on Monday.

20 June 2011

Mon 20 Jun

We were blessed with a lovely, sunny day for our first hiking day. We had a very good breakfast at the restaurant at 8:00 and were ready to set out by 9:00. We did the same route we liked so well last year, walking up the Cascade River along the waterfalls and back down the other side. Both sides are variable up and down so there's a lot of variety. Takes us about 5 1/2 hours plus half an hour for sack lunch along the way. We came back to the room for a nap afterward. I expect we"ll head in to Grand Marais in a bitto bum around before dinner.

They're predicting thunderstorms tomorrow but I'm holding out hope that we"ll get clear weather to hike in the morning.

Food:

8:00. 2 egg omelet, mushrooms, tomato, peppers, Swiss cheese, 2 pc wheat toast, butter, marmalade, coffee, 1/4 c Dad's oatmeal
12:00 pm. Turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, 2 slices whole wheat bread, am orange, chocolate chip cookie, bottle water
2:30 pm. Snickers bar

Sun 19 Jun

Happy Father's Day to Dad! I gave him the newest Bourne book, some gummies, and some synthetic blend polo shirts with pockets. We should get going pretty soon for our North Shore adventure. It's raining today, but if it clears up as predicted for tomorrow for hiking, I'll be happy.

I didn't get up early to exercise this morning as it will be a long day. Hopefully it will stop raining when we get there and we can get a short evening hike in yet today.

Hippo birdie 2 Michael! I made ebelskivers filled with homemade blueberry compote and texted him to join us. He said he would but I hope he comes while they're still warm. They're best that way. It was also a pre-Father's Day treat for Dad. Oh, good! He just walked in the door! We had a nice visit over ebelskivers. This evening Michael has graciously agreed to go with us and Grandma to church and then we're going to the Pinewood for dinner. Michael wanted money for clothes shopping for his birthday, so I also gave him a coupon for 20% off the total at Kohl's (where he likes to shop). He is going this afternoon with a friend to shop.

Michael said he had a good birthday. We had a very nice meal at the Pinewood. He was wearing a new pair of black jeans and a nice t-shirt that he bought today. We all shared a carafe of lambrusco and included a Father's Day toast to Grandpa who also enjoyed a glass of lambrusco.

Food:

9:30 am 6 ebelskivers w/blueberry filling, 54 g raspberries, 1/4 large cantaloupe, coffee

TGIF! This week has seemed long to me, probably because I've been dragging at least some of the time. Today my glutes are sore, but that's from a combination of hiking and a couple of morning exercise videos heavy on squats and lunges. I won't be sorry to finish the day and have a mini-vacation to look forward to.

I also want to pin down dates and make reservations/flights for Virginia. Please think about dates. I thought perhaps leaving early on Sunday Aug 7 and returning on Saturday Aug 13? I will start looking for flights first, then lodging, so any thoughts you can contribute would be helpful.

Feeling a bit more energetic and like myself today. Always a good thing. Good Pilates class last night; sorry we have to miss next week when we go to the North Shore. Wish Joan was teaching all summer so I could really internalize all of her great tips on posture and form. She does many of the same moves that Patrick did, but explains them differently so you really use your muscles correctly. Never realized what poor form we used before.

My coworker had an excess of farm fresh eggs to sell today so I bought a dozen even though I didn't need them. Thought I'd use some for supper since they're so fresh, so I found a crustless quiche recipe where you can add whatever you like. I had one thawed chicken breast left so I sauteed it with fresh red pepper, Vidalia onion, and some of the fresh asparagus from the market and added fresh basil, thyme, and rosemary. It's in the oven now.

Quiche was yummy, nice and light. Went well with a nice mixed green salad w/some of the yummy strawberries we bought this weekend and a handful of blueberries. Strawberries were so tasty, I decided to have a dish of sliced berries w/a dollop of Lite Cool Whip for dessert!

I would wear a Yourmometer t-shirt!

Looks like a very nice day today; hopefully we'll get out hiking to enjoy it. I'm frustrated because I seem to be putting on weight again. The scale keeps inching up and the clothes keep getting tighter. I seem to be getting plenty of exercise, and I don't feel like I'm eating any more than usual, but I guess I must be. I continue to count the calories, but I guess I sneak in a few too many treats and really good meals. I know I have not been as conscientious with logging every meal, especially with traveling or at potlucks where I'm not sure of ingredients. Time to step it up a bit I guess.

Hiking was great, but we were both wiped out from just slighty warmer-than-usual temps.

Sun 12 Jun

Nice to see the sunshine today. Wish it would start to warm up again.

We now have another full-size family portrait. John dropped off the one he had used in his studio; I assume he's putting up some newer works so he just gave us the one he had displayed. Not too sure where we'll put it as Grandma couldn't see it in her apartment, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting it at Michael's for fear of the party people that frequent the place, and we don't have another wall big enough to display it. I fear it may go into storage until you or Michael get a place where it would be appropriate.

Learned to my dismay that pineapple upside down cake is quite high calorie. Everyone brought dessert last night, so most of it was left and sent back home with us. I plan to take it in to work tomorrow if I remember to share with coworkers.

Cooler weather just for you! Did you get your 100% chance of precip? Here we just have grey skies today. I don't believe it rained in the night, but then again, I'm not sure. Should be nice to hike in cooler weather tonight. First time this year with Barb. She's also bringing us some of Kurt's homemade black bean soup.

Joan had a lot of good tips about body alignment that I tried to apply to my exercises this morning. Hope I can continue to remember them.

Plan is still on for Dad and I to come down this Saturday for Farmer's Market and errands. Are you available? Will you be at the market helping Deb or would you rather walk around with us?

Sounds good for Saturday - we'll let you know more on timing before we leave.

Oh my, we had one of those suppers when Mom makes little noises of delight with every bite. You know, the ones where Michael used to get embarrassed sitting at table with me.

So far feeling much better and more like myself today after a day of rest. Hope it lasts. We start a 4-week Pilates class with Joan Karlen tonight at Studio B Pilates. She decided that since no one knows if/when Patrick will resume, she would offer a class herself since many people had been making inquiries.

Good news! It's noon and I'm still feeling a normal energy level. I'd love to think it will continue.

Almost 5 pm and still feeling normal. Looking forward to Pilates. Hoping Dad gets home soon so we can walk downtown.

Joan's Pilates class was very good - very cerebral as Joan always is. She uses the neutral spine alignment and parallel legs and explains each step of the process. Result is feeling each move more clearly and some very nice stretches. Came home and made some killer homemade pizza burgers.

Had a really hard time moving through exercise this morning. Tired and low energy. Only did part of the Complete workout for about 50 min - upper body and aerobics. If I don't perk up after I finish the first two appointments of the day today, I may come home and rest up for the day to try to shake this for good. The first appointment is a weekly med delivery that needs to be done and the second is the lady I cancelled Thursday afternoon when I stayed home to sleep so I feel like I have to go in to do those at least.

Came home at 10:00 am and have been taking it easy. Took the opportunity to finish LOTR with Return of the King extended version. Perfect for laying on the couch resting. Planning an afternoon with either Top Chef, a book, or a little of each.

Watching Top Chef always inspires me to cook. Also it was a fairly low energy expenditure for a nice result. Asian-style stir fry with chicken breast, sliced pepper, sliced Vidalia onion, garlic, crushed red peppers, hoisin sauce, fresh cilantro, and steamed brown rice on the side. Very nice.

Food:

7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 132 g strawberries, coffee

Trying to re-muster my energy after Walk Wisconsin. Got a ton of laundry to finish today, but choir is done so there should be time. Grandma wants to go to the St. Joe's picnic chicken dinner for lunch. I need to go through the dining room table for bills that need attention.

We've planned the next mini-vacation to the MN North Shore June 19-22 for the Hiker's Delight special at Cascade Lodge. Booked a room in the lodge itself in hopes that they'll have a better mattress and shower. Beyond those two things, the room we had last year was clean and charming so maybe we'll hit the jackpot this year.

Dreamt we had a snowfall here. Michael was in the house with us and we heard a noise around the front door. When I opened it, you were shoveling the snow off the front steps. I didn't know you had come home so it was a very pleasant surprise! Nice dream except for the snow.

Laundry on the line, feeling tired.

I don't think Kate's illness was necessarily the same thing I had, unless it was just a much worse case. I didn't have any involvement with chest congestion, sore throat, or throwing up. Just various aches and pains, sinus congestion, and progressively worse exhaustion as the day went on. The exhaustion continues on some level, though yesterday I perked up again in mid-afternoon even without a nap. I wasn't exactly energetic for the rest of the day, but I did feel able to stay awake and participate til normal bedtime. (Pigeons in the Park went well for Suzuki.)

Walk Wisconsin today. Will be interesting to see if the afternoon tiredness strikes while I'm walking. Hope not. At least it looks like partial sunshine and nice weather for a change.

Beautiful weather, lovely walk!

Even after an extra 2 1/2 hr nap yesterday which helped me feel human in the evening, and a solid good night's sleep beside, I'm still tired this morning. I can't wait to shake this illness and get back on track.

Looking at coming to Madison next week Saturday for early farmer's market and lunch. Almost out of TJ's cereal. I'm supposed to be back for a 6:15 pm cantor potluck; if I make it, great. Will you be free to lunch and errand with us?

Today marks 27 years of marriage for Dad and I. My mom and dad would be at 66 this year if Grandpa was still living, and I believe Gordon and Catherine had a few more years on them. A momentous date.

Can't decide if it felt good to get back into exercise or not. It did, but I was still quite tired. I pooped out again during the day at work yesterday much on the same schedule as when I was in Oregon. Energy started flagging around 11 am and continued to dive all afternoon.

Tonight we sing at St. Mary's, tomorrow Suzuki concert, Saturday Walk Wisconsin. Not sure when I get to catch up on rest.

Bake sale today at work, but I tried to pick healthy stuff. I also may not get much supper with St. Mary's tonight.

Laid down for a 20-min nap at lunch time and just couldn't make myself get up when the timer went off. Took out my contacts and crawled in bed for 2 1/2 hours which right now feels like it was a wonderful choice.

Wed 1 Jun

Not enough sleep is likely to tell on me later today. I chose not to get up early to exercise since I was only going to get about 4 hours sleep anyway. Tomorrow is soon enough to get back into routine. Bodies need sleep, too.

Once again I felt pretty good to start the day but started losing energy around 11 am. I'm going to try to sneak in a 10-min nap before heading back to work.

Guess I'll celebrate National Running Day by running up the stairs to an early bedtime.
