Thurs 31 May

I was quite tired yesterday starting around noon. I took my usual apres-lunch nap, and just never felt rested the remainder of the day. People commented during afternoon staffing that I looked unusually tired. I took it easy in the evening, but then didn't sleep as well because I wasn't sufficiently active during the day. No win. Tues 29 May

My hips and legs are sore, both during the night and yet today. Wondering if this is the aftermath of starting to run. Seems unlikely since the program starts so slowly but it could be cumulative effects of other exercises in the mix. My left ankle is also feeling a little strained. Walk Wisconsin is this weekend, so hopefully all the aches and pains will resolve before then. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, New Zealand pear, 87 g raspberries, coffee 12:00 pm Vanilla soy shake, 34 g almond scone, 147 g strawberries 1:00 pm Dark chocolate sea salt caramel 2:45 pm Small individual York pattie 4:45 pm 1/4 vegan grasshopper brownie Exercise: 4:45-5:35 am Jane Fonda Original Workout video

Mon 28 May

Happy Memorial Day! Hope the weekend has been awesome for all. Hope you have good weather for the long drive back to Portland - safe travels! I was really tired at the end of the day yesterday. Having less than two hours to prepare for the cookout was a little stressful, but once Kurt and Barb arrived, I could relax and enjoy the evening. I was surprised at how wiped out I felt afterward. My Fitbit indicated it was not a very active day, but my body begged to differ. Sun 27 May

Have to go to a Karlen family baptism today with Mass at St. Stan's and lunch at Holiday Inn. Have to take both Grandma and Leone, so you know I'm thrilled about it. Kurt and Barb are coming for dinner later so the day will be redeemed. I'm tired, very tired, so tired. Long day. The baptism party was fine, nice to see all the Karlen relations after all. The meal at Holiday Inn was quite good. I had less than 2 hours to prep for Kurt and Barb's dinner, but I managed to make the quinoa salad, homemade sangria, and a rhubarb crisp. I prepped the asparagus for roasting before they arrived, but sliced the pineapple for grilling after. The new grill ran out of gas so Bob and Kurt had to go fetch a new tank before I could grill the steaks. Food: 7:00 am Morning bun, New Zealand pear, 102 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm 6 oz poached salmon, 1/2 c mashed potatoes, 1/4 c rice pilaf, 1/2 c broccoli/cauliflower, 1/2 c fruit salad, 1/4 c Caesar salad, blueberry muffin, lemon poppyseed cake w/lemon frosting 4:30 pm 8 oz black sangria 5:30 pm 12 oz HuckleWeizen beer, 5 oz grilled sirloin, 1/2 c quinoa salad, 5 spears roasted asparagus, rhubarb crisp w/ 1/4 c vanilla ice cream Exercise: 5:55-6:45 am Brutal ballet DVD

Fri 25 May

Hope you are having a wonderful time with all the Oregon folks. Safe drive down to Ashland today. Enjoy your stop at the old lady store - look for some good treasures! Love to you all! Yesterday there were huge winds blowing all afternoon so that dirt from the Plover potato fields was infused in the air and blown into town. There was a fine film of it over most of the bathroom from having the window open. Fortunately most of our other windows don't face south so they received less of it, but I'm realizing now that my computer keyboard apparently received a small dose that needs to be cleaned - NOW! Aaaah, better! Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 98 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Chocolate soy shake, 48 g challah, 153 g strawberries 12:30 pm 1 pc Kaap's chocolates Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am The Firm Boot Camp DVD

Thurs 24 May

Safe travels to Oregon! Hug everyone for us. We will hold down the fort here in Wisconsin, including a sad visit to Madison with no Laura there to spend time with. We are in need of stocking up on Madison groceries, and I want to pick up tomato plants at the Farmer's Market. We decided to get a Hotwire room on Friday night so we don't have to get up quite so early to hit the Farmer's Market at a good hour. We'll be at the Madison Radisson thinking of you! Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 101 g blackberries, coffee 9:30 am 1 Nestle chocolate egg, 1 Butterfinger egg, 1 oz garlic dill pretzels 12:30 pm Blueberry soy shake, 66 g challah, 158 g strawberries 5:45 pm Chicken apple gouda sausage, wheat bun, 1 tbl pineapple salsa, 3 oz baby carrots, 2 c watermelon chunks, 12 oz diet Cherry Dr. Pepper 7:30 pm Turtle Exercise: 4:40-5:40 am Brand New Butt DVD

Wed 23 May

Last night's sleep went by really fast. Would have liked it to last longer. Not that I'm really overtired today, but a little longer in bed would really have been appreciated. Yesterday was a pretty full day with hiking in the evening, so maybe tonight will need some scheduled downtime. Someone put out a Hardee's cinnamon raisin biscuit for grabs. I haven't had one for ages! Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 100 g blackberries, coffee 9:30 am 1 Hardee's cinnamon raisin biscuit 11:45 am Chocolate soy shake, 78 g challah, 152 g strawberries 12:30 pm 1 dark chocolate sea salt caramel 3:15 pm 1 oz garlic dill pretzels 6:00 pm 5 oz grilled seasoned salmon filet, 1/2 c grilled diced sweet potatoes, 1 tbl diced Vidalia onion, 1/2 tsp olive oil, 1 1/2 c Steamables snap peas, carrots, & cauliflower, 12 oz skim milk 6:30 pm Jello Sugar Free dark chocolate pudding cup Exercise: 4:50-5:50 am Burn It Up DVD

I have a court hearing with a client today that I will be glad when it's done. Hope you are finally working less now that the semester is winding to a close. I'd like you to have some genuine relaxation time when you go to Oregon. I will miss seeing you this weekend. Maybe we can chat by phone before you go. Lovely evening for a walk along the riverfront, admiring the baby ducks and goslings. Broke down and got ice cream from Square Scoops for the walk home. Sun 20 May

Loving the summery weather! Changed over from flannel to regular sheets and it felt so nice last night. Sort of wish I had a laptop so I could take my morning coffee and breakfast outside and still do my morning computer routine. Maybe someday. Dad and I dared the imminent storm and went for a brief walk. Made it home and still no downpours. Food: 7:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 99 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Crepe, 2 scrambled eggs, veggie mix, coffee 3:00pm 2 c watermelon chunks 4:00 pm 2 Jordan almonds 5:30 pm Aldi bacon-wrapped tenderloin, 1/2 c potato/portabella/Vidalia onion/butter, 2/3 c pea pods w/1 tbl mushroom/onion, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 6:50-7:40 am Brutal ballet DVD 4:00-4:45 pm Walk with Dad

19 May 2012

Sat 19 May

Another quiet night on the pager is a good thing. ArtsWalk was nice and I think half of Newman turned out. We saw Deb and Chuck, Lee and Gary, George Meeks, Bob Beeken, Margaret and Bob Konkol, one of the regular student coordinators, and possibly a few others I can't remember. We cut our perusal a little short because, for some unknown reason, I was starving and could think of little but food. We went to Kristin's (former Hot Fish Shop) because it didn't seem crowded. I would not return. They were switching to a new menu and didn't have several of the things on it including 3/6 of their side dish offerings. The service was slow and the potato salad (which I ordered because the fresh fruit was not yet available and I didn't want fries or chips) seemed to have no seasonings in it. The porridge mix is good, but I still prefer your concoction This mix has oats, all bran, corn meal and whole wheat, raisins and dates, cream powder, cinnamon and maple flavoring. The texture is smoother than regular oatmeal, probably because some of the other meal is finely ground. I had forgotten how the same exercise routines seem much more intense when the weather is warmer. Went to Elizabeth Hofer's Suzuki recital tonight. It was like old home week from all the Suzuki folks we haven't seen for so long. Elizabeth did a beautiful job. Food: 7:45 am Pennsylvania Dutch porridge (from mix purchased in Door Co), 1/4 med cantaloupe, 100 g blackberries, coffee 12:30 pm Chobani 0% blueberry yogurt, 70 g chalkah bread, 154 g strawberries 3:15 pm 3 c watermelon chunks 5:45 pm 6 oz moscato (too sweet!), slice bread w/dipping oil, small tossed salad w/1 tbl mango viniagrette, small portion seafood pasta dish 8:45 pm 1/2 oz Gouda, cucumber sandwich on cocktail rye, 3-4 pc fruit, toffee bar Exercise: 10:30-11:20 am The Firm Boot Camp DVD

Fri 18 May

Had one call on the pager yesterday, but it was early evening and easy to handle. I worked with Sgt. Paul Piotrowski who did most of the talking. He is from Newman, and his son Evan? is finishing his first year of law school. How did your last final go? Are you done with the other projects so you finally have a moment or two to relax and have fun? Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 99 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm Chocolate soy shake, cranberry/orange scone, med orange 12:45 pm 3 Fiesta malted milk eggs 4:45 pm 2 c kettle corn 6:30 pm 3 beer-battered haddock filets, 1/2 c potato salad, 8 oz red ale Exercise: 10:25-10:45 am Walk with coworker 5:15-5:35 pm Walk down to ArtsWalk 7:15-7:35 pm Walk home

17 May 2012

Thurs 17 May

A little cooler this morning, but they're promising real summer weather this weekend. I'm ready. I'd like to pick up herbs to plant from Kmart as the ones I bought there last year did very well. We have to stay home this weekend since I'm on call, so it would be a good weekend to plant the herbs and impatiens. The hanging basket I ordered from a Newman fundraiser arrived last night. It's a new kind with long hanging fronds of blossoms. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 138 g strawberries, coffee 9:45 am 1 pc Swedish coffee bread 12:30 pm Vanilla soy shake, cinnamon scone, med orange 1:15 pm Kaap's chocolate caramel 6:30 pm 5 oz extra lean ground beef, 100% whole wheat sandwich thin, 154 g strawberries Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am Kristi Yamaguchi workout DVD 5:55-6:15 pm Brief neighborhood walk

16 May 2012

Wed 16 May

May is starting to fly by as well. I certainly don't mind if the on-call week flies by. No calls last night was good news. Having a breakfast visit with my client this morning so I'll go for oatmeal again. The restaurant she likes has a hard time with reasonable portions of anything else. I can just eat as much of the oatmeal as I want and leave the rest without feeling guilty. Food: 6:45 am 35 g Swedish coffee bread, 1/2 grapefruit, 84 g raspberries, coffee 8:15 am 2 eggs, 1/4 c hash browns, 2 pc sourdough toast w/butter, 2 pkgs orange marmalade, coffee 11:45 am Cinnamon scone, 143 g strawberries 3:30 pm .2 c butter toffee peanuts (finished a jar that has been on my desk since Christmas) 6:15 pm Grilled chicken apple gouda sausage, Brownberry Select wheat bun, 1 tbl pineapple salsa, 3.25 pineapple rings, .5 tbl rum, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:45-5:45 am Burn It Up DVD 4:55-5:50 pm Walk

Mon 14 May

Looks to be a beautiful day today. Hoping to hike tonight with Barb as I'll be on call the rest of the week and thus stuck at home. Hope you're able to free up some time to get out on your bike to enjoy the weather. Did you get the repairs you needed? I am vicariously looking forward to your Oregon trip for you. I will miss seeing everyone and spending time at the fun house in Ashland. I think part of the reason I'm feeling more strapped for cash lately is that I'm finally feeling the impact of smaller paychecks due to having to pay in toward retirement. Even though that began last year in October, I think I have been in denial that I actually have less money, and as I pay the monthly bills, I have less and less left over. This month, I didn't have enough to cover my share of the charge card bill until I get paid again this time. Fortunately, Dad had enough to make the payment on time and I can get him my share to cover a few days late. Definitely has affected our willingness to spend money knowing that the income is now less. Very nice hike with Barb tonight. Food: 6:45 am 90 g chocolate chip brioche, 1/2 grapefruit, 76 g raspberries, coffee 11:00 am 1 oz Muenster cheese 11:30 am Blueberry soy shake, 140 g blueberry scone, 53 g hard goat cheese, 153 g strawberries 12:30 pm 1 pc Kaap's chocolates 4:45 pm 2 c kettle corn 8:15 pm 1 slice marble rye, 3 oz pulled pork, 2-3 apple slices, .5 oz colby cheese, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:45-5:55 am Jane Fonda Complete Workout DVD 5:30-7:30 pm Hiking Rib Mt plus tower

Sun 13 May

Another Mother's Day here again. We're taking Grandma to brunch at Bernard's so my calorie count is not going to be good today. Yesterday was better than expected because the Cultural Fest seemed much smaller than the last few years and there wasn't as much food temptation. Bernard's dessert table rarely fails to tempt, however. Brunch was nice, weather is beautiful. Food: 7:45 am 1/2 chocolate chip brioche, 1/2 grapefruit, 75 g raspberries, coffee 11:45 am Mimosa, shrimp salad, fruit salad, slice pate, beef stroganoff, spaetzle, mini-quiche, slice BBQ pork, slice roast beef, veggie blend, chocolate-dipped strawberry, Grand Marnier ball, slice Kahlua torte, swan cream puff, strawberry tart 6:45 pm 57 g challah, 6 oz pinot grigio Exercise: 6:45-7:35 am Brutal ballet DVD 4:30-6:05 pm Walk to/around Schmeeckle

Sat 12 May

Cultural Fest in Point today, Faire on the Square in Baraboo. Why do two of my favorite events have to be scheduled on the same day? We'll hit the Cultural Fest around 10:30 for as long as we like, then if there is still enough time and energy remaining, we might drive down to Baraboo, too. If not, Cultural Fest always makes for a nice day on its own. Food: 8:00 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, blueberries, and soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 53 g blackberries, 98 g strawberries, coffee 11:30 pm 1 1/2 steamed buns, 1 c chicken vegetable curry, 1/2 crepe w/cherry pie filling & chocolate sauce, coconut bubble tea 2:45 pm Crepe w/fresh lemon juice, powdered sugar, 1/8 c walnuts 5:00 pm .6 of sandwich on marble rye w/pulled pork, sliced apples, grilled onions, colby cheese, iceberg lettuce salad, 1/3 pc chocolate cheesecake Exercise: 3:15-4:30 pm Hiking Devil's Lake bluff trail

Fri 11 May

I have to get a cavity filled this morning for the first time in a long time. Hopefully it is an experience I will not need to repeat often. My quads are sore. I assume it's from hiking in Door Co, but I can still feel it. Especially during squats this morning. But the quad stretch at the end of the routine felt wonderful. Had half of the first entree we brought home from Vittoria's in Appleton from our Italian dinner. We will get two meals out of this one, so also likely the other. Since we had a nice meal at the restaurant with soup and sauteed scallop appetizer and tiramisu with wine, not a bad haul for $35. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 100 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Chocolate-frosted cinnamon scone, blueberry soy shake 12:30 pm 1 pc Kaap's chocolates 3:15 pm 3/4 c vanilla ice cream, 1/2 c Mug root beer 6:15 pm 1 c fettucine, 1 c sauteed mushrooms, 1 tbl onions, 1/4 c spinach, 1/8 c walnuts, olive oil, 1/2 pkg Pictsweet spring vegetables, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:45-5:35 am The Firm Bootcamp DVD

10 May 2012

Thurs 10 May

Home again, and hopefully back to good eating habits. I allowed myself too much junk (e.g. donuts from the breakfast bar!) in Door Co. I did get a good walk/hike in daily, but still..... Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g blackberries, coffee 12:30 pm Vanilla soy shake, chocolate-frosted cinnamon scone, 138 g strawberries 2:00 pm Iced coffee, 1 oz skim milk, Equal 4:00 pm 20 oz diet Coke Exercise: 4:45-5:45 am Burn It Up DVD

08 May 2012

Tues 8 May

Having a nice time in Door Co. Were able to get in about a 3-hour hike yesterday. We were out for 3.5 hrs, so figuring in stops, total hiking time was good. Terrain is relatively level in Newport, but you still need to navigate tree roots, slippery rocks, etc. Weather has been mostly cloudy, some rain (though not when we were hiking). This morning it's quite foggy. Hoping it will be good for another long hike after breakfast at the White Gull.

06 May 2012

Sun 6 May

Well, Newman is having their picnic today so of course it's raining and thundering. We had a couple of years of sunny picnic weather, so I guess we had our quota for awhile. Oh, on other Newman news, Fr. Tom is now going to be pastor of both Newman and St. Stan's effective late June. Even he isn't sure exactly how it will work, but they will remain distinctive parishes for now. Food: 8:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 103 g blackberries, coffee Exercise: 7:30-8:40 am Brutal ballet DVD

Sat 5 May

Enjoyed Danstage and First Nighters last night, but was barely able to stay awake. I had managed a half hour nap at lunch that really wasn't enough. I will be so glad to be back (someday) to my full and regular healthy energy. The illness symptoms are minimal, with a little drainage that coughs up through the day, but the tiredness is still there to a degree. Hope things are going well in your life. Haven't had a chance to talk to you or hear from you in such a long time. Doesn't look like we will have a weekend in May to come to Madison until Memorial Day, and you will be in Oregon. Today we have to take Grandma to church at 5 pm, next weekend is Cultural Fest and the following weekend I'm on call for work. Apparently the pear I had for lunch was a little gone over. It tasted fine, just had a few softer spots, but my innards have been churning ever since lunch. Seems like everyone in town thought of going to El Ranchitos for Cinco de Mayo. Couldn't even find a place to park, and as it had started to rain, we decided to pick up Rocky's and eat with Grandma in her apartment. One less in-and-out transfer, especially in the rain. Food: 8:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 100 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm Blueberry soy shake, slice nuttygrain bread, 1 tbl Fisher PB, large pear 6:45 pm Sausage/mushroom Rocky's slice Exercise: 10:35-11:30 am SparkPeople Bootcamp DVD 2:45-3:45 pm Walk to Family Video

Fri 4 May

MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU!!! We are going to First Nighters tonight prior to attending Danstage. Joan and Jack gave us their First Nighters tickets as I expect they get in free anyway as the head choreographer. It should be a fun evening. I have a breakfast visit with one of my clients this morning so I'm doing the fruit at home and hoping to get oatmeal there. Food: 6:45 am 1/2 grapefruit, 102 g blackberries, coffee 12:15 pm Chocolate soy shake, slice nuttygrain bread, 1 tbl Fisher PB, 1/4 large cantaloupe 1:15 pm 2 Fiesta malted milk eggs 5:45 pm 5 oz zinfandel, 5 oz chicken breast, fruit salad, 1/2 c roasted red potatoes, 1/2 c grilled vegetables, small slice apple pie Exercise: 4:50-5:40 am The Firm Bootcamp DVD

03 May 2012

Thurs 3 May

I was a bad girl and slept in this morning. After hiking two evenings in a row, it felt good to lay in for an extra hour as it was a little late getting to bed again last night. Now I'm committed to exercising on Saturday, but I should have some time in the morning so that's not a bad thing. I may check out a small CSA expo at the new community greenhouse project (located in the old Sorenson's Greenhouse) from 11-2, and we have to take Grandma to Mass Saturday night since we're leaving for Door Co on Sunday. I think we'll take her to El Ranchito after church since it will be Cinco de Mayo. Retreat today at the library with teachings by a Buddhist nun and yoga. Dr. Leahy's partner made a beautiful lunch for us with homemade tabouleh, hard boiled eggs, hummus, pita, and a Moroccan carrot salad. Dr. Leahy brought organic dark chocolate bars for everyone. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm 1/2 c tabouleh, 1/4 c carrot salad, 2 tbl hummus, 1/2 multigrain pita, hard boiled egg, dark chocolate bar 5:15 pm 3.6 oz extra lean ground beef, 1/2 tbl grated asiago, 1/2 tbl arrabiata sauce, 1 tbl ketchup, wheat sandwich thin, 1 c lettuce, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 9:45-11:00 am Yoga

02 May 2012

Tues 2 May

I think I may actually be able to remember to go to the dentist this morning. Some time if you're going to be back in Point for a few days, we could get you in to see Dr. Seavecki for a checkup, too. Missed our hiking connection with Barb, but decided to proceed on our own. Discovered we were still somewhat tired from last night, so did only a partial route, but managed to hear an owl and spy a deer and a pileated woodpecker. Got enough walking to feel energized, though it was steamy weather. Went to the Dane where the nightly special was an ahi carbonara pasta which was a little weird - overcooked chunks of ahi tuna, bacon, red pepper, broccoli, peas, shredded red cabbage and shredded carrots in a light cream sauce. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm Blueberry soy shake, slice Nuttygrain bread, 1 tbl Fisher PB, 1/4 large cantaloupe 3:00 pm 1 Dove dark chocolate egg 3:15 pm Fit N Active superfruit frozen bar, 1/2 tube Fizz energy powder 7:00 pm 4 oz Scotch ale, ahi carbonara pasta, 2 halves garlic bread 8:30 pm 2 Fiesta malted milk eggs Exercise: 4:45-5:45 am Burn It Up DVD 5:30-6:40 pm Partial hike Rib Mt
