Fri 30 Sept

Sad day today - last day of union contract for PCHHS employees. It will be extremely difficult to overcome the legal obstacles to ever get back to where we were. Oh, and the county decided to drop our compensation for carrying the stupid pager to $1.50/hr - less than minimum wage in the dark ages when I had my first job. That means than on Thanksgiving and the day after, instead of being compensated 4 hrs pay for being available to the county all day, I will get a whopping $12! About 1/8 of what I signed up for. I will not be signing up for any holidays in the future if I can avoid it.

Thurs 29 Sept

Feels very much like a Monday after our nice little break at the North Shore. We certainly had beautiful weather for our trip, and today their forecast is for rain and 40 mph winds so we got out at a good time. Sad to think they'll likely lose a large portion of their beautiful color to wicked winds but I'm grateful we had a chance to see the color at near peak.

Had a potluck at work for lunch for a retiring colleague who is beating the end of the union contract. If I had opted to do so, this would have been my last week at work.

Food:

7:00 am 1/2 caramel pecan roll, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 104 g blueberries, coffee
11:45 am Potluck: bun, 3 oz hot beef, 1/2 c fresh pineapple, ramen slaw, spinach salad, pasta salad, tortellini salad, small piece apple pie dessert

Sun 25 Sept

Looking forward to a few days off for hiking and good food and relaxation. Started off at my regular early weekday time for exercise so I could get ballet in before an early start on the road. Getting up early was made slightly more difficult in that when I just "popped on" to Facebook before heading off to bed, James was there and wanted to chat. I haven't had a good chat with James for many months so it was quite a bit later heading off to bed than planned. He is doing well and hopes to finish his degree by next May. Jonathan is now managing a hotel in Brattleboro, VT.

How nice to sleep in til 8:30 this morning, even if the last half hour or so included a cat who decided to do his absent-claw sharpening thing on my left boob and then walk across my chest to stick his butt in my face. I'm not usually the last one up so I have not had this pleasure in quite some time.

Took Grandma to Mass tonight and she treated to dinner at Bamboo House. Very nice.

Food:

9:00 am 1 serving multigrain flaxseed hot cereal, 1 tsp brown sugar, 1/2 c blueberries, 2 oz light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 1 slice banana bread, coffee

3:30 pm 2 c kettle corn

8:45 pm 2 pc dark chocolates

Fri 23 Sept

Still not finished battling my cold, but feeling a little less fatigued today. Weren't able to hike last night because Dad couldn't get away from work early, but I really appreciated another evening to rest. I suspect that's a factor in feeling a hair better this morning. If we don't get out tonight, I just might feel better for the North Shore. Rest is nice.

Yay! I've missed Lincoln.

I have two large cookie sheets of roasting root veggies in my oven now and I'm salivating. I have a rotisserie chicken (not Costco, but the best I could find locally) to go with them so I'm eagerly anticipating supper with a glass of the Gewurtztraminer to keep me company. Dad is over at Joan Karlen's doing an estimate, so perhaps he'll time it to come home about the time things are ready. If not, I'll save him some.

While I was waiting for the nice guy at Plover Copps to call South Side Copps to find out if they had any parsnips, I started rummaging through a bin of 75% off books. I found an awesome cookbook for $1 - The Hippy Gourmet's Quick and Simple Cookbook of Healthy Eating. There are some recipes that sound incredible including a sweet potato casserole with rum, some great soups, several variations on ethnic flavorings for a big pot of beans. Quite a snag for $1. I've already used the roasted root vegetable recipe to contrast with the one from SparkPeople. I may try the recipe for hot quinoa cereal for breakfast tomorrow; he adds chopped apple and raisins. Sounds awesome.

Thurs 22 Sept

Can't tell you how much I enjoyed an evening at home last night. Got into my comfy clothes, baked a loaf of fresh banana bread, made spaghetti with good ground beef, a red and green pepper, baby bella mushrooms, Vidalia onions and arrabiata sauce topped with fresh grated Parmesan - delicious! And then relaxing on the couch with a couple of episodes of Top Chef. A very restful evening. I love Pilates class and hiking but they take up most of my evening after work, at least in terms of my energy. Sometimes a restful evening is a necessary tonic.

Frustrating morning. Homeless woman with mental illness issues came in late in my intake shift. Had to stay til 1 pm when I handed the case off to another worker to finish off. Looks like our county will buy her a one way bus ticket to Green Bay.

Rough day at work calls for a nice glass of Gewurtztraminer with my kettle corn snack at home. Dad felt bad that his work didn't allow him to get home in time to hike tonight. I, on the other hand, felt relieved. Not sure I could have forced myself tonight. Perhaps if the weather holds, I'll actually enjoy a hike tomorrow. Right now, I'm enjoying the gewurtz!

The other good antidote to a stressful day is homemade mac 'n cheese. Ah, I feel human again!

Slept last night without meds! Rewarded myself further by extending sleep time an hour since I hiked last night in spite of being tired and I have Pilates tonight. Beneficial rest seemed more important today.

Your season tickets for women's hockey arrived here today with the first tickets being for this Friday night. We will do our best to get them down to the post office and mailed out to you but I can't guarantee you'll get them in time for Friday. Not sure why they mailed them here.

Dad got the tix mailed. Hope you enjoy the hockey games! Go Badgers!

Mon 18 Sept

Cut my long routine a bit short this morning because I could really feel fatigue from the cold and my right leg hurt alternately in the knee, shin, and hip flexor. Thought I'd abort the lower body section and take the route of caution. Pushing through fatigue has merit, but can also lead to injury which I prefer to avoid. Might be able to hike tonight which would add some exercise time to the day.

Nice to get another little taste of somewhat warmer weather. At this point, I'll take anything I can get.

Sun 17 Sept

It's definitely a cold and it's in full swing. The Advil Cold & Sinus is good but only lasts 4-6 hours so I found myself waking up in the night when it wore off. Last night I used my 12-hour Sudafed but it was battling the congestion and not always winning. At least I can hope it's worked its way out of my system before we hike at the North Shore. I made it through a 6.5 mile walk along the riverside path yesterday even though it was "one foot in front of the other" for a good portion of the walk. Friday had been pretty sedentary with the car ride and several errands taking all our time in Door Co. No time for a hike there. We did get our yearly supply of apples including a large bag of Galas. If we have some left (very likely), we'll share when we next get to Madison. That's likely to be Sat, Oct 1. We also hit the Farmer's Market in Green Bay yesterday, so now I need to find time (and energy) to roast red and gold beets and fennel, grill sweet corn, and use my peppers while they're still fresh. I even bought some poblano peppers which I've never used before. Maybe I'll try roasting some.

New electric mattress pad for the bed. Old one kaput. Warm bed again.

Learned today that Gala apples don't break down into sauce when you cook them. But a dish of cooked chunks lightly sugared and spiced was still yummy.

8:00 am Morning bun, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 95 g raspberries, coffee
12:00 pm Crepe, scrambled egg, veggie mix, coffee
3:45 pm 1/3 caramel apple w/nuts

Opted to sleep this morning instead of getting up to exercise before we leave for Door Co/Green Bay. Sinus medicine kept me clear most of the night, but I felt them filling up around 3 am. I knew if I took more medicine, I would want to sleep later than 4:30, but I didn't want to tolerate the sinuses so I opted for medication and a little extra sleep to fight it off. I believe it was a good choice. It's been a pretty active week anyway.

Thurs 15 Sept

Felt my sinuses filling up last night which didn't allow for a satisfying night's sleep. Also a slight headache from same. Hopefully it's pollen-related and not a cold coming on. Doesn't thrill me for Lion's Camp today to be at half power, but oh well.

Headache and sinuses took a break during the day, but started to resurface just before the drive home. Two different people insisted Advil Cold & Sinus would do the trick, so I stopped at Walgreen's and bought some. Waiting for bedtime to take the first dose so it lasts me into sleep time.

Tues 13 Sept

Had to go back to basic cereal for breakfast this morning in spite of the presence of yummy prune ponczkas from Panacea. Felt the need for more wholesome start to the day since this is the week of lunches out. Today - Bill's Pizza for junior beef.

I was bad. My obnoxious client didn't feel like talking to me today, so to further reward myself, I stopped at Belts for customer appreciation day and got a small bananas foster brownie flurry. At least I only ate half and saved the rest!

Small Pilates class tonight - only 4 of us so we got lots of individual attention and spent time refining our postures.

Remember that you still have a Groupon for a massage by Shawna to use before Nov 24. I believe you said you'll need to take your bike there, so best to go before it gets too cold.

Food:

Another Monday morning, oh joy. Thinking of Rick Williams, former CSP worker who switched to Intensive In-Home worker in January. He is retiring on Friday so this is his last Monday morning to drag out and start a week. Can't quite conceive of how that must feel. Still seems a bit too soon to be seriously considering it.

A coworker brought in a Monday treat - homemade banana bars. Couldn't resist.

I really enjoyed eating dinner outside in a short sleeve shirt, skirt, bare feet enjoying the breeze (actually wind is more like it).

Hope things are well with you now that school is back in full swing. I'm sure it's a very busy time of year.

Enjoying a chocolate chip brioche from the French bakery. Been a long time for this particular treat. I have to cut it in half as the whole thing is huge.

Grandma particularly enjoyed Panacea today. We treated her to pancake breakfast for Grandparents' Day and she liked seeing all the sights.

Only thing we got at Panacea silent auction this year was a gift certificate for an oil change at Mark Motors. It came with an XL Toyota t-shirt and a cap that will be bingo prizes for camp.

Food:

Walk for Hope today; we usually are able to walk with Hartmans. Today we will also remember Michele's brother whom she lost to suicide. Gonna run down to the square quickly before so we can pick up a loaf of fig hazelnut fennel bread and a bouquet of farmer's market flowers for Hartman's for their anniversary.

Enjoyed the walk on a picture-perfect day. Picked up some late season cantaloupes and some chocolate chip brioche at the market for ourselves, then returned to putter after the walk and added some very nice veggies to our bag. Panacea later.

Panacea was same old, same old. Bought some prune ponczkas, picked up some little stuff for camp bingo prizes at the cherry tree, had the roast pork sandwiches.

Checked Packers.com first thing to confirm that they won; I was too tired to watch the second half when I got home. Go Pack!

Sure was nice to sleep in this morning, feeling I'd earned it. I set my alarm ahead before I went to sleep so I didn't even wake at the usual time.

Sat in the sun with a glass of wine and perused the LL Bean catalog imagining all the things I would order and wear if money were not an object. I could replace most of my winter wardrobe, especially for retirement, from Bean. Oh, and I got my gold bracelet and necklace back today from the jeweler, repaired with a new clasp on the necklace and the permanently kinked part of the bracelet removed as part of my birthday present. It is sooooo nice to have my familiar jewelry back!

Going to Culver's tonight to redeem my free birthday sundae coupon!

I can't wait for centipede season to end. I know they stay in the house, but I just want them to stay inside the walls where I don't have to deal with them.

Today is Hartman's anniversary. I plan to get them a nice bouquet of flowers from the farmer's market and a loaf of good bread, probably from the Main Grain. Now that I've figured out what to get, I just need to manufacture the time to do it.

Did go hiking in spite of glutes that have been complaining in the background for the last two days. Promised myself that if I did the whole hike to the top of the tower, I could sleep in tomorrow morning and give the glutes a rest. We have a 5-mile Walk for Hope on Saturday, so my usual day off would just come one day earlier.

Went to the Dane after the hike, and timed it perfectly (accidentally) so we arrived just after kickoff at the beginning of the opening drive. Asked to be seated where we could watch the game and enjoyed most of the first half with dinner. Listened to the rest of the first half on the radio on the drive home.

Had a nice little cuddle with Jordan on the bed before rolling out this morning. He was happier than usual to just lay next to me.

So nice to have a day off with relatively few commitments. We're going to Hartmans for dinner tonight. I need to go through the papers on the dining room table and take care of bills and such, especially Grandma's.

Lovely dinner with Hartmans; nice that Michael could also come and spend some time with Eddie. My birthday is complete now; I had someone sing "Happy Birthday".

I could tell I didn't do ballet last Sunday (due to the fair). It was a little harder than usual to get through it today, but I made it. Those plies are still killers even with years of practice.

Hope the stormy, rainy weather didn't put too much of a damper on Taste of Wisconsin. Look to be sunny and pleasant now for the next few days.

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Wish you could join us for dinner tonight.

Was tired when we got home from dinner at Pinewood.

Looks like a nasty weather day for Dan and Sherry's wedding; he's the Master Chorale director and she's a fellow second soprano. We are part of the singing for the wedding at First English Lutheran in Wausau and will attend the dinner and dance in a pavilion at the park. Hope the pavilion is big enough for everyone to crowd inside and well protected if we get predicted thunderstorms.

Decided to forego the usual breakfast and go to Cafe 27 for brunch, however when we got there, it was closed for the Labor Day holiday. We met Fr. Tom as we were walking away disappointed and he recommended Emy J's. I didn't know they served breakfasty stuff, but the pancakes were awesome.

Wedding went okay. Stayed for the dinner, then headed home.

Fri 2 Sept

TGIF! This seemed like a long week. I was bad this morning and allowed myself to go back to bed instead of forcing exercise. I'll try to do something at the end of the day, maybe a nice evening walk, but it felt so good to indulge in a little extra rest that I can't believe it was all bad. I felt kind of yucky all day yesterday, though not specifically ill. I'm hoping this little gift of one extra hour's sleep will take care of that.

I did something today I have not done for a couple of months - went to the gym. I cut the elliptical short at 40 min for the first time back and I'm pretty well pooped.

01 September 2011

Thurs 1 Sept

This is certainly likely to be an unusual Sept 1 for weather. No scraping frost off the windshield this morning. I had a really hard time getting out of bed and getting through exercise today. Sweaty and tired.

Looked at the website for Taste of Madison - looks fantastic! Wish we could make it down, but we'd drive all that way, sample 3-4 dishes max, and be too full to try anything else. Much nicer when you're close and can come back later for more. Enjoy and eat something particularly yummy for me. I'd love to hear about anything outstanding that you encounter.
