God! I love the breakfasts at Washington House Inn! Everything is fresh and delicious and the bakery items were still warm. Cappuccino chocolate chip muffins and strawberry croissants were incredible! Potato medley with purple, red , white, and sweet potatoes, scrambled eggs, fruit salad, homemade granola with beautiful blueberries to pile on top, banana bread with black walnuts.....

Planning to head down to Cedarburg around 10 today. We will have lunch in Grafton at the BBQ place we like, catch any shopping we need, then head in to Cedarburg. As soon as we check into our room, we will likely head down to the winery where we can use up our tickets for a free tour/tasting. The hotel then has a wine/cheese hour from 5-6 pm. I may stop at the boulangerie before the winery tour to pick up some goodies for later. We are often sufficiently full from lunch at Atlas and the food offered with wine hour at the hotel as not to need another actual meal. If we have some goodies from the bakery laid by, we should be good for the day. If not, we'll have to head to the adjacent store that sells mammoth caramel apples to share. Oh well.
Food:
8:00 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c fresh blueberries, soy milk, 2 apricots, 102 g blackberries, coffee

Had no energy for exercise this morning, which was somewhat of a surprise since I wasn't all that tired when I got up. I could do the movements, but I had no oomph behind it. I did stop a little before the end of the second DVD for lack of gas.
I put a little chopped marjoram and rosemary in the mashed potatoes and a splash of lemon juice on the microwaved asparagus. Surprisingly, the lemon juice mixed with the asparagus "juice" turned red!
That was a refreshing walk! We started out to get the rest of our 10,000 steps for the day and Dad was nervous about the rain clouds in the north. They did decide to let loose as we got by the UWSP tennis courts on Reserve St, so we got a wet return walk home. Dad had brought his rain jacket but I was in cotton capris with a non-hooded fleece so I was thoroughly wet. Fortunately, the rain was fairly warm and there was no wind so I wasn't cold. The shower on the day with no hot water was significantly less comfortable.

Week is going by quickly. I had mistakenly thought we would be home most of Saturday, but then realized that we are staying in Cedarburg Sat night, and likely will leave by 10 am so we can do lunch in Grafton and possibly use our tickets for the winery tour in Cedarburg in the afternoon. Very sweaty exercise session this morning. Frustrates me when I only get 2400 steps for all that sweat. It was a combination of step, aerobics, and weights so it's well-balanced. Will have to put in some extra walking later today to get the step count up to 10,000 though.
Ice cream sundae day at work this afternoon. Couldn't resist.
We had the best of intentions to hike tonight. I wanted to wear off my sundae. Weather looked very promising when we left Point, but by the time we got to Wausau, you could see rain and storm activity including lightning not nearly far enough away. We opted to stop and ask questions about how to pursue the AT&T phones for you and Michael. They, of course, could not do anything for us directly but they suggested we call their customer service number and tell them we currently are grandfathered in the unlimited data plan and don't want that to change. Then Dad should be able to order the non refurb phones through the website for $20 each. We need to wait a bit longer, however, because once again our credit card number has been compromised. The card was denied at the gas station and the Dane tonight, so Dad checked the online account and someone had tried to charge flights on United this past Sunday totaling over $2000. Fortunately the cardholder put a hold on the account so we could have the charges removed but now we need to cancel the card and have them send us a new one with a different number. They said we might have the new cards by Friday.

Nice to get last week's Fitbit report from our hiking week to see my daily average steps over 13,000. Wish I could keep that up! Unfortunately, it requires more time than I have in the regular work week to devote to hikes/walks.
I have one more morning bun left, but this morning I really wanted cereal for breakfast to be a bit more filling.

I had a most "refreshing" shower this morning. Some time in the night, the hot water heater went out so the shower was totally cold. Fortunately, I had gotten pretty sweaty in my workout so my body temp wasn't in danger of going too low. Dad had to search out a butane match and is in process of relighting it now. No idea why it went out. Then again, maybe he isn't relighting it. He ran into issues with safety shutdowns so he can't get at the pilot to manually ignite it and the auto-ignite isn't working. Hopefully this won't turn out to be expensive.
Did I mention how wonderful the apple danish from Batch was? Wow! And Nom Nom shortbread cookie!!!
It's officially summer! When supper is grilled salmon patties, sweet corn and asparagus, you know the season is in full swing.

Got an email from Delta that our flight time out to Great Falls was moved up from 8:30 to 7:30 am. We still arrive at about the same time. We also get home to Madison around 8:45 pm; I had thought it was 8:30 before. Oh, well. Nothing has changed so significantly as to be majorly inconvenient.
Did my ballet routine on schedule, but then stopped for breakfast and will get the rhubarb cake in the oven before going back to do the cardio dance DVD. This way I get some nourishment when I felt the need and the cake has a little longer to cool before Charlie's shower.
Coffee cake made and cooling, lemon curd/mascarpone dip made and chilling. Michael and his friend stopped over asking to use the showers because he still finds a leak that Dad never sees when he goes to check it out at Grandma's house. They showed up just as both of us were heading to the showers so they had to wait, but they didn't seem highly inconvenienced. They apparently both had a chance to use the downstairs shower after Bob in the length of time it took me to do all my own grooming tasks upstairs.
The shower was lovely, a true Kathy Hartman fete. Lots of food and convivial times. We'll probably see everyone there again next week at the wedding. I believe Charlie and Mary really liked the Cook's Illustrated cookbook. I ordered it through Amazon as I have really liked the copy I got for Christmas from Costco.
6 pm Mass was quite the experience tonight. The celebrant is the assistant priest to the city; he is technically assigned to Fr. Tom but fills in at all the parishes. He regularly celebrates the 6 pm on Sunday which is now offered year round. Apparently he is a rabid fundamentalist as well. His sermon referenced the US Bishops second annual period of prayer for freedom, and he chose to focus on the right to life, the "sanctity" of marriage (as he understands it), and the "robbing of freedom of religion" because of the need for health insurance to cover abortion. He was in full Bible-thumping, fire-and-brimstone form for a long homily. When he had finished, three students respectfully got up and left. Those of us who remained were considerably quieter and anxious to leave. I hope Deb does not ask me to cantor another 6 pm. She was as upset as any of us, grinding her teeth and finishing as quickly as we could.

This is a pretty nice hotel room. It is a small suite with couch, small kitchen space, nice desk, separate vanity area. The breakfast was good with real oatmeal in a crockpot, fresh scrambled eggs and good OJ.
Good day today. The little rain we had during the Farmer's Market was only a little damper. We got all the good veggies and other things we wanted. We have yummy pastries to enjoy. We got all our erranding done after we dropped you off. We opted not to do dumplings this time around. When we passed Bluephie's, I thought about the duck confit grilled cheese sandwich and Dad didn't really feel like dumplings today anyway. I was somewhat disappointed that Bluephie's changed it to a chicken confit grilled cheese. It was still good, but nowhere near as yummy as the duck had been.
It was nice to get home at an early hour today, get all the groceries put away, and some down time. It has been a very busy week with the hiking trip, getting the car, James' visit and Madison. It feels good to sit.
Food:
7:30 am. 2/3 c scrambled eggs, 2 tbl shredded cheese, oatmeal, 1 tbl brown sugar, 2 tbl raisins, 1/2 c milk, 6 oz OJ, coffee
Various samples at TJ's, Brennan's, and Costco

Weeks go by really quickly when you don't start working until Thursday. Today will be very busy again with Grandma's care conference at noon and trying to get on the way to Madison shortly after 3 pm. I managed to unpack my bag from the North Shore and repack for Madison this morning after my shower. I need to grab a few things out of the Matrix to transfer to the new car - think umbrella(!) and lots of canvas bags for Madison shopping among other things. I believe at least the umbrella will happen right away this morning since we are getting on-and-off rain showers all morning so far.
Had a really nice visit with James last night. He doesn't look any different so it's like no time had passed since he lived here. Michael had forgotten and his friends took him out to Ranchitos for Mexican food and too many margaritas as a belated birthday celebration, but he made it over for awhile before James left.
These granola bar lunches are most unsatisfactory. Grandma's care conference went well but took up all of my lunch hour. Need good meal tonight. Dad called me while I was driving back so I got to try out answering the phone through my steering wheel. Fun!
Food:
7:00 am 1/2 grapefruit, 100 g blueberries, coffee

Back from a great vacation at the North Shore. Weather was very kind to us and we got a couple of beautiful long hikes on Mon and Tues, and a delightful short 5:30 am hike at Oberg Mtn on Wed morning. Coupled with great food and nice relaxing times - the vacation was definitely a success.
Busy next few days. This noon, we pick up the new Prius C. Right after work, James is due to visit and Michael will join us for a cookout. Tomorrow noon, there is a care conference for Grandma at Whispering Pines, and at 3 pm, we will try to be on the road for Madison to check in to the Clarion and hopefully have dinner with you. Saturday is the Farmer's Market, errands in Madison, and time with Laura. Sunday is Charlie and Mary's shower (for which I hope to bake a rhubarb cake in the morning and make this awesome dip Barb told me about). At 6 pm, I have to cantor at Newman. I will be exhausted by the end of the weekend!
Took way longer than I had expected to pick up my car, pay the bill, and get the tutorial. No time for lunch. Since we're cooking out with James after work, I'll settle for a granola bar and the free S'mores from the Employee Foundation til I get home.
Food:
6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light vanilla soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 100 g blueberries, coffee

Happy Father's Day! We are off to the North Shore in about an hour for our three-day tour. Hopefully we won't be rained on too much and the previously-forecast cold temps will be more moderate. I'm looking forward to some good hiking and some good eating. We pick up our new car on Thurs noon so this is the last hurrah for us in the Matrix. Michael is interested in buying it, so we won't have to say goodbye to it.

Nice to have a Saturday when there is no need to get up earlier than you want to. All the things on today's to-do list can be accomplished later, e.g. visiting Grandma, 5:00 pm Mass, 7:00 pm at Christian's Bistro to celebrate Michael's birthday. I do still need to bring back the table stuff I put upstairs when Hartmans came on Sunday. I believe there are some of Grandma's bills in among the stuff and they should be paid.
Can't believe I bought a new car today. Wouldn't have dreamed of it when I got up this morning. Really was just going to look, but it was a car I really liked, a color I loved, and it had a sun roof. It was meant for me.
Had a nice dinner at Christian's with Michael.

Happy Flag Day! I had a really hard time getting out of bed to exercise this morning. Just incredibly sleepy. Tomorrow I can sleep in. I had to keep telling myself that to motivate, but it worked. Had a hard time getting up this morning. Had been having a weird dream which I had just stopped and was falling back into deeper sleep when the alarm went off. Took awhile to shake the urge to stay in sleep mode. Not sure I'm completely there yet.
The nice thing about both Dad and I having Fitbits is that it motivates us to get those extra steps in at the end of the day if we're reasonably close, especially if the weather is at all conducive to getting in a short walk. It would be so much easier to flop down in front of the computer or hop in bed with my book, but if we can both get out for even a 20-min walk, we can make our 10,000 step goal together. Tonight we would have walked to Tokyo Steak House for 1/2 price sushi night, but it was drizzling so we drove. The rain had mostly subsided when we got home, so without even stopping in (other than Dad needing to pee), we just set out on a short walk.

Sunshine this morning - always a pleasant way to start the day. Now that I'm wearing sandals again, I note that I desperately need to take off the old chipped polish and put on fresh. Hiking destroys the polish so that it looks very tacky.
Had a text conversation with James last night. He is coming to Wisconsin for a visit. We can actually coordinate so he will come for dinner on Thursday evening next week. It's really been a long time since we've seen him. What fun!
One of my coworkers turns 40 today. Heather brought a rhubarb cake. Oh my.

Made it through the entire exercise routine this morning. While that is the norm, last week I couldn't do it. But of course I didn't walk 40,000 steps yesterday so I wasn't so wiped out. I do feel a little less than optimal, somewhat tired or foggy, but not too bad.
We had a very nice time at the Newman dinner last night. I believe it was catered by Michele's. I was proud of myself because I limited myself to a small salad w/1/2 tbl dressing on the side, a single serving of beef tips over noodles, green beans w/almonds. I did allow two glasses of wine and a healthy serving of Deb's homemade rhubarb crisp, but only 1/4 c of vanilla ice cream. There was also a rolled pork tenderloin that looked delicious but I realized that one entree was quite enough. Oh yes, I did also have a small 1" square chocolate chip bar.
Went to Perkins and ordered off the senior menu. Oh, my!
Had John, Kathy, and Eddie Hartman for dinner on the spur of the moment to share the organic chicken we bought from Rose Ross on Saturday morning. Brined it for 2 hours and cooked it in the vertical rotisserie. Roasted a combo of chopped white potato, sweet potato, carrot, Vidalia onion, overwintered parsnips, and ramps. Made a nice green salad and served watermelon chunks with outrageous rhubarb cake for dessert. A veritable feast!

I feel gypped! It was supposed to be at least partly sunny today and I want to get my herbs and leeks planted and it's raining again! Maybe it will clear later, but the rain makes me so lethargic. We drove out to Gary and Rose Ross' place this morning and picked up an organic chicken which will hopefully go on the rotisserie tomorrow. Tonight we have a music minister's dinner at Newman.
Food:
8:30 am Morning bun, 1/2 grapefruit, 148 g strawberries

It was a major struggle to get myself out of bed and exercising this morning, but my scale rewarded me with a slight downward dip. I know I'm not likely to get a lot of steps in today, so I jut had to suck it up and do the exercise. Tomorrow I can sleep in.
Had to be "one of those" customers at the restaurant with my client this morning. I ordered the homemade wheat toast and was given store bread so I sent it back. Their homemade toast is the thing I like best about this restaurant so I wasn't willing to settle for less. It was worth it.

Got an offer of a good deal on Hotwire, so we booked a hotel in Madison on Fri Jun 21. This will let us be down there to get an early start at the Farmer's Market on Saturday without having to get up so early. We are at the Clarion near the Alliant Energy Center. We get a hot breakfast buffet so we won't be so tempted by market treats. Hoping you are planning on our visit that day since it's one of the few days we'll be able to come to Madison in the near future.

Two nights in a row of just under 7 hours sleep. I'm used to my full 8. But we checked out B&Bs in Napa last night and found one that looks great so it was worth staying up. There are a lot of choices to sift through in a variety of price ranges and amenities. We booked at the Old World Inn in Napa. I was sold on the nightly chocolate dessert bar they set out after dinner, as well as the chocolate chip cookies on check-in. Karen said she was going to Tahoe for the weekend but we don't arrive til Sun night. Hopefully we'll at least be able to meet them for dinner once while we're in their neighborhood.

The start of a new week. Our vacation plans are starting to come together for the trip west. Kitty and Val and Kate will all be in Portland when we plan to be there. Haven't yet heard from Chuck/Karen, Dan/Kris, or Geoff/Michele. I assume Grandma will be there.
BTW, Marissa Greuel (or however you spell her name!) is going to be moving to Madison. We blessed her at Mass yesterday before she leaves. Maybe you can get in touch and welcome her to town when she moves.
Had lunch with Bill Pyke today; he retires at the end of next week. Had a good time laughing and reminiscing. Assured Bill that he would leave the frustrations of CCCW behind immediately.

Happy Anniversary to Bob and me, and to both Grandmas and departed Grandpas. 29 years for us. I hope to go out to dinner tonight after my Suzuki recital. Sometime today, I need to find time to get the laundry done. I fear I may not have finished some of last week's yet.
I did my ballet this morning, but I'm still wiped from the Walk yesterday so I just couldn't bring myself to put on the dance DVD as well. That means I have virtually no steps in yet today even though I spent 50 minutes exercising. I've always found that frustrating.

Walk Wisconsin today! And at 7:22 am, the sun is shining with some clouds. Would be so nice if it didn't rain on us, at least not most of the day. We're anticipating walking for about 6 hours, about the same as our walking days in France without the mountains. And with people feeding us every few miles. And a lot more people walking with us.
We did it! We put on over 40,000 steps to complete the 3/4 marathon. I started listening to tunes on the iPhone about halfway through which was great. It kept me in a walking rhythm and distracted me from my feet. Also we changed socks at about the 3/4 point which was very nice. Now we're quietly recuperating.

7:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light vanilla soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 100 g blackberries, coffee

6:30 pm 44 g beef brisket, 1 slice Innkeeper's whole grain bread, 12 oz skim milk, 1 1/2 oz citron rum
