Mon 30 Sept

Wow, end of September already. Scary. Only a slightly normal week to return to as I have the Kalahari conference Thurs/Fri. It was good to get up and exercise this morning. The new LED lights make the basement noticeably brighter. Maybe that will keep the centipedes more at bay. Only saw a couple quite little ones this morning. Food: 6:45 am Morning bun, 1/2 grapefruit, 99 g raspberries, coffee 11:45 am Vanilla soy shake, mocha chip scone, 2 homegrown plums 12:30 pm Maple cream chocolate (leftover from tasting Sat) 6:30 pm 2 grilled chicken drumsticks, 1/2 c grilled fingerling potatoes w/Vidalia onion & drizzle olive oil, 1/2 c acorn squash w/1 tsp soft margarine, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:50-6:00 am Jane Fonda Complete Workout

Planning to hit the road soon so we can be at the Farmer's Market around 10 am to peruse the fall goodies. Our Grand Taste event is tonight from 7-10 pm so we can lunch late and do some errands today, some tomorrow. We will look for Mass tomorrow morning in Middleton. Hope to spend as much time with you as you can spare. Food: 7:15 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c blueberries, soy milk, 1/4 med/large cantaloupe, coffee

Fri 27 Sept

I have a biometric screening at work today for a rebate on health insurance. They didn't tell us til after we signed up that we can't eat or drink anything except water or black coffee until after the screening. Mine is at about 9:30 this morning. I am taking a scone and fruit to scarf down after, but I expect to be quite hungry. I'm also taking my vitamins with me because they upset my stomach if I take them without food. Fuck! I was tired when I got home last night and left two good boxes of leftovers in the canvas bag on the living room floor overnight. I had intended that we would eat those leftovers for dinner tonight. I'm not willing to take the chance to eat quesadilla or cooked pork chop/polenta that sat out unrefrigerated all night and day. Again I say Fuck! We will try to come to Madison around 10 am tomorrow to hit a little of the Farmer's Market. I'm ready for winter squash! Food: 6:45 am Coffee 9:45 am Mocha chip scone 11:30 am 1/4 med/large cantaloupe, 50 g blackberries, blueberry soy shake 4:00 pm 100 cal pack Snapeas 5:45 pm 4 oz Reserve d'Oriane 6:30 pm Laura's oatmeal w/protein powder, flaxseed meal, 1/3 c blueberries, soy milk, 9 g bakery cinnamon toast Exercise: 4:50-5:40 am The Firm Bootcamp DVD 5:10=5:40 pm Walk to Newman Center to pick up cantor music for next weekend and home again

Tues 24 Sept

Having a great time with absolutely perfect weather for hiking. We have had two great days of hiking about 7-9 miles each, nice variations in elevation. Today we summited Minnesota, climbing its highest peak. We have also been enjoying great food, probably negating all the calories we burn off hiking. One more full day left. We head back Thurs after an early short hike and breakfast.

Sun 22 Sept

Calendar says that today is the first day of autumn. Good day to head up to the North Shore to hike. Hopefully they will have at least some color to provide a pretty background. I finished reading about the couple who walked around Lake Superior a couple of years ago, and especially enjoyed their home stretch through the area we will be visiting. They mentioned a lot of the places we stop or at least see regularly. Now off to experience them ourselves, even if our hikes are much less demanding. Very nice day with the exception of the outcome of the Packer game. We were able to get quite a bit on the Packer radio network. Always makes the long drive go more quickly. Our little hotel is pleasant and quite sufficient. It is a mile or two up the hill from the lake and busy Hwy 61 in the ski resort area. It reminds us of the little hotel in Whitefish, MT. We walked from our hotel after checking in and found a spur of the Superior Hiking Trail for a nice short hike before dinner. We may follow this trail farther another day as it goes about 6 miles to the Caribou trailhead so an out-and-back hike would be a good length for a day hike. Dinner was at a nice little pub/restaurant called Papa Charlie's. excellent airline chicken stuffed with chèvre and prosciutto. Dad had maple BBQ ribs. Surly Furious on tap. Pumpkin creme brûlée for dessert. Good meal. A nice little sauna in the hotel capped off a good first day of the trip and first day of autumn. Food: 7:00 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c blueberries, soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 103 g blackberries, coffee

21 September 2013

Sat 21 Sept

Today we get the 5000-mile maintenance done on the Prius, and hopefully I will learn more about operating the electronics, e.g. the GPS, Pandora, radio presets. (God forbid I would just read the manual!) We are meeting Grandma for lunch at the Bamboo House. She is coming via Plover Taxi. We may check out the Dozynki Harvest Fest downtown if there's time this afternoon, primarily looking for homemade ponczkas, or other errands as needed. Laundry should fit in there somewhere. Mass at 5 pm at St Stan's. Pack to leave for the North Shore tomorrow. Nice easy Saturday. Grandma did quite well at Bamboo House, though she no longer eats very much. I think she enjoyed it. Happened on a Prius seminar at Mark Motors while waiting for the maintenance, and finally solved the mystery of how to get Pandora on the car; it took them awhile to figure it out but I have to have the phone plugged into the USB port and they still had to mess around with signing in, etc. to get it to work. Also learned how to jump start the car in the case that you leave it running and run it down to nothing. Food: 7:30 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c blueberries, soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 100 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Chinese buffet at Bamboo House: 2 crab rangoons, dinner roll, 3 pc sushi, green beans, mushrooms, shrimp & beef hibachi, rice noodles, fried donut, sm pc cake roll, tea 6:45 pm Salsa meatloaf, 1/3 c Simply Potatoes mashed sweet potatoes, 1/2 c mexican style canned corn, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:30-4:50 pm Walk to church at St. Stan's 6:00-6:40 pm Walk home with extended neighborhood walk

Fri 20 Sept

The Chef's Dinner at Michele's was excellent and it was great to visit with Chuck and Deb while enjoying great food and wine. We learned (the hard way) not to continue to drink everything they put in front of us, including refills of the wine glasses. I am still feeling the alcohol this morning. I slept in instead of exercising this morning to get a full 8 hours for the first time this week, but I still feel a little dizzy. We are just not hard core drinkers. Food seems to be helping the situation. I had breakfast with my client and am a bit less foggy. Food: 6:45 am 1/4 med cantaloupe, 101 g blackberries, coffee 8:15 am 2 eggs, 2 slices homemade wheat toast w/butter & marmalade, coffee 11:30 am 1 large banana 2:30 pm 1 Babybel Light 6:30 pm Salsa meatloaf, 1/2 c Simply Potatoes mashed sweet potato, 12 oz skim milk 7:15 pm 1 1/2 c watermelon chunks Exercise: 5:20-6:20 pm Richard Simmons DVD

Thurs 19 Sept

Lion's Camp today, so wouldn't you know, it finally rains. Things are dry enough that it's hard to complain about a good rain, but the timing might have been better. There's still a chance that things will clear up before we get out there. We usually don't have time for walking around the lake or water activities until after lunch. Tonight is the Chef's Dinner at Michele's. Chuck and Deb will also be there, so hopefully we can sit with them. Lion's Camp had a mixture of sunshine and rain. Unfortunately, the hardest rain (with copious thunder) occurred while I was taking a walk by myself around the lake while everyone was playing bingo. I also got off course and realized I had walked in a loop as opposed to getting back to camp, but I did manage to take the right turn next time around. No harm done. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 6 oz OJ, coffee 10:45 am Sm package Sun Chips 12:00 pm 3 oz chicken breast, slice American cheese, slice tomato, dark lettuce, 1 tbl BBQ sauce, bun, cucumber slices, carrot sticks, broccoli, 1/2 c chocolate pudding 4:00 pm Sm Twizzlers stick Exercise: 4:55-5:55 am DWTS for Weight Loss DVD 1:00-1:30 pm Walk around lake with Kathy 2:30-3:15 pm Walk around lake and extra loop

18 September 2013

Wed 18 Sept

Did a DVD I haven't looked at for a long time, and I can feel my quads from the large number of lunges and squats. I was reading a discussion on people's favorite exercise DVDs and someone mentioned this one so I felt the urge to dig it out. It isn't as many steps because several of the exercises are in place, but it is a good workout. Making a new recipe for crock pot salsa meatloaf using Bill Pyke's home canned garden salsa. Hope it turns out well. OMG, it's delicious! Sue said I could come at 6:00 for my hair appointment, but she had forgotten to ask her previous client to come early so she had to finish up. At her suggestion, I went next door to the new wine bar to check it out and he had a cold open bottle of Vouvray chenin blanc. Time well spent. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 110 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm Peach soy shake, 86 g chocolate chip brioche, SweeTango apple 12:45 pm 1 licorice wheel 5:15 pm Salsa meatloaf, 1 c Pictsweet broccoli, 1/2 c Simply Potatoes mashed sweet potatoes 6:00 pm 5 oz chenin blanc Exercise: 4:50-5:50 am Burn It Up DVD 3:20-3:40 pm Walk with client 5:40-6:00 pm Walk to haircut 8:20-8:40 pm Walk home

17 September 2013

Tues 17 Sept

Wasn't as congested last night, but my sinuses are hurting again this morning. That had dissipated several days ago and could have remained absent if I had my druthers. If the new DWTS DVD that I tried today was the first one I had ever bought, it would have been the last. The first one I bought was fast-moving and challenging. This one was Dance 101, simple and repetitive. Hopefully the others I ordered in this batch will more closely resemble the first one. Got hungry early and couldn't wait for Dad to get home. Made a yummy sandwich with leftover roast beef, a slice of Jarlsberg on an onion bun and a fresh apple. Once again, singing lesson ran too late and we opted not to go out for dessert after. Since I had built up a nice calorie reserve in anticipation, I used this as my chance to try a piece of the Nutella bread pudding we bought from the Piggly Wiggly in Door Co. Hefty but yummy. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 98 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Vanilla soy shake, apple cider donut, SweeTango apple 12:30 pm Dark chocolate sea salt caramel 3:00 pm Chamomile tea 5:30 pm 2.65 oz roast beef, onion bun, slice Jarlsberg Lite, SweeTango apple, 12 oz skim milk 9:00 pm Slice Nutella bread pudding Exercise: 4:50-5:50 am DWTS Latin Dance DVD 2:20-2:50 pm Walk with client to South Point 3:30-4:00 pm Walk back 6:00-7:00 pm Walk with Dad to Schmeeckle 7:10-7:25 pm Walk to Suzuki

16 September 2013

Mon 16 Sept

Still not feeling great this morning. Cut the exercise a little short, eliminating the lunges and floor work. Was thinking about taking some time off again today, but feeling a bit better now. We'll see. I need to get my logs and payroll done, and I'll look at my schedule and evaluate whether I think rest would help. One of our psychiatrists had a table at the Walk for Hope Saturday and we engaged in a conversation about running. She told me to check out Chi Running on the net. It is a style of running similar to barefoot running in which you strike on the ball of the foot and lean your body forward so you are striking beneath your body weight to propel yourself as opposed to striding in front of your body to drag your weight up to your foot. She claims it is much less tiring and less prone to injury as your knees stay bent. I tried walking briskly using this technique on my break. I could see my silhouette and it looks a little silly while walking, but it was less tiring overall and I could walk at a faster pace than usual. My back was a little sore from holding my posture at an unusual angle, but I think this merits further exploration. Did a little of the new posture on the evening walk, but my muscles aren't sufficiently trained yet to keep it up for an hour. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 100 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Blueberry soy shake, apple cider donut, SweeTango apple 2:15 pm 100 cal pack Snapea Crisps 5:30 pm 4.15 oz beef roast, 1/2 c fingerling potatoes w/onions & mushrooms, 3/4 c carrots, 5 oz Frontenac Rosso Exercise: 4:50-5:40 am Jane Fonda Complete Workout, abridged 2:52-3:15 pm "Chi" walk 6:25-7:30 pm Walk with Dad

15 September 2013

Sun 15 Sept

Well, the last two days started out well and ended crappy. Hope that trend is quickly at an end. I still have the cold, but I can deal with that. Just would prefer no more disappointments. Perhaps that means I should stop looking forward to things. Food: 8:30 am Chocolate croissant, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 103 g blackberries, coffee 11:30 am Molasses cookie, coffee 12:00 pm 2 eggs over easy, 3 pc bacon, 1 slice French toast, 1/2 tbl whipped butter, 1/2 tbl syrup, coffee 2:45 pm 8 chocolate dipping chips, lemon curd mascarpone dip 5:50 pm Chicken veggie casserole, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 6:45-7:35 am Ballet DVD 7:35-8:10 am Cardio Dance Party DVD 4:15-5:40 pm Walk with Dad around Schmeeckle lake

14 September 2013

Sat 14 Sept

Busy day ahead - running late already. Will walk over to the old Rice Clinic parking lot to get going with the Walk for Hope. As soon as it's done, we'll head out for Door Co, possibly stopping for lunch at St Brendan's. Apples are on the afternoon agenda and whatever else time allows, then back to DePere for dinner at Sebastian's Cafe Chanson. Nice to get our 10,000 steps in right away between the 5K and the walk there and back again. Kathy and John did not walk this year so Dad and I made pretty good time (for us). Damn! Couldn't make a reservation at Cafe Chanson because we didn't know when we'd get here. Now we couldn't get a table til 8:15 which would mean we wouldn't get home til after 11. Damn! No Cafe Chanson for me. Food: 7:15 am 64 g chocolate chip brioche from Aldi's, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 101 g blackberries, coffee 10:00 am 1/2 blueberry bagel w/light schmear of whipped cream cheese Exercise: 8:25-8:40 am Walk to Rice parking lot 8:55-9:55 am 5K Walk for Hope 10:00-10:15 am Walk home

Fri 13 Sept

Hello, Fall! I hope we haven't seen the last of summer weather, though I wouldn't regret the humidity staying low. Quite a change to the cooler temps today. It was a nice evening for a walk yesterday, though we got a late start because Dad had to work a little late so we only got a partial hike. Some is better than none, and with my cold, it was likely a good thing to not push too hard. Planning to do the annual 3-mile Walk for Hope for suicide awareness tomorrow morning. We usually walk with John and Kathy. Afterward, we plan to take a quick drive to Door Co to get some fresh apples, finishing with dinner in De Pere at Cafe Chanson. Weird. I was trying to open My Comics Page email and it disappeared. Chicken casserole tonight with a large tomato and green pepper I picked up at work that someone had brought from their garden - maybe even picked this morning. Food: 6:45 am 1/4 med cantaloupe, 103 g blackberries, coffee 8:15 am 2 eggs over easy, 2 slices homemade wheat toast w/butter & orange marmalade, coffee 11:45 am Chocolate soy shake, 136 g walnut scone, plum 6:15 pm 1 c chicken casserole, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:50-5:35 am The Firm Sculpting/Cardio DVD 5:35-5:50 am Salsa Dance DVD

Thurs 12 Sept

Still have the cold, but it seems more established now. Should be cooler today so maybe we'll hike tonight. Michael should be home now, but probably sleeping for a long time after his Amtrak adventure. He had an unforeseen layover in Winona, MN on the way home which frustrated him. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 100 g blackberries, coffee 10:30 am 1 Reese's miniature 12:30 pm Strawberry/banana soy shake, 140 g cinnamon raisin scone, homegrown plum 7:30 pm 4 oz watermelon wheat beer, tomato bisque with parmesan shreds, 1/2 grilled cheese w/tomato & avocado on foccacia Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am Dancing with the Stars DVD 6:00-7:10 pm Hiking Rib - partial

Tues 10 Sept

My chenin blanc from Goosecross should be here tomorrow, and my new Keen day hikers from Grandma might arrive today. I also ordered some new Dancing with the Stars fitness videos from Amazon so I'm expecting all manner of goodies! Fun! Was a little embarrassed today with my clients. First I walked to Perkins with a client who then wanted to stop for a glass of iced tea. I hadn't brought any money on the walk so I had to borrow for the tea. Then I went to McDs with a different client in the afternoon. I had checked the website to choose a low-cal snack and found that their Kiddie Cone has only 45 calories so it sounded perfect. The cashier was a little disconcerted when I ordered it, but asked another cashier if it was okay, then gave me the cone. Turns out they don't charge for kiddie cones. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 101 g blackberries, coffee 8:45 am Large iced tea 11:45 am Blueberry soy shake, large cinnamon raisin scone, home grown plum 3:15 pm McDonalds Kiddie cone 5:30 pm 2 slices turkey, 1 slice Jarlsberg Lite, 1 slice 12 grain bread, leaf kale, 12 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am Cardio Dance DVD 8:00-8:40 am Walk to Perkins w/client 9:15-9:55 am Walk back 5:55-6:50 pm Walk with Dad

Sun 8 Sept

What a nice day yesterday in Madison. Some really excellent food and really excellent company (with our daughter!) Thank you so much for the lovely knitted scarf and the arm warmers. Almost makes me anxious for cooler weather to set in so I can start wearing them. Had the Batch almond mini-coffee cake for breakfast and it was really delicious. Must be difficult to live so close. We will do the bread thing (fougasse?) this evening with the Packer game, or as much as we can catch before choir at 6. I think I'll look in the pantry for a good soup to go with it, or perhaps some good cheese and a salad. Went out at halftime to get the remaining steps for my 10,000 and needed to get them in a short time slot, so did a walk/jog which didn't go too badly. Food: 8:30 am 164 g almond mini-coffee cake, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 101 g blackberries, coffee 12:30 pm Mini-cinnamon bun 3:30 pm Chicken stir-fry, small portion fougasse?, espresso brownie, 12 oz skim milk 7:45 pm Lemon icebox cheesecake Exercise: 6:50-7:40 am Ballet DVD 7:40-8:10 am Cardio dance DVD 5:05-5:25 pm Walk/jog

06 September 2013

Fri 6 Sept

I have breakfast with my client this morning, but not til 9 am due to need to sit in on an 8:30 psych appointment with someone else. Had to modify my usual "just fruit" at home to allow enough carbs to keep my vitamins from making me lightheaded and nauseous with that long a wait for real breakfast. Bill Pyke is taking me to lunch at Emy J's this noon, and we have Connie's baby shower for the upcoming twins at 4 pm. Busy day. Food: 6:45 am 1/4 med cantaloupe, 1 chocolate graham cracker, coffee 9:15 am 2 eggs over easy, 1 1/2 slice homemade whole wheat toast w/butter, 1 1/2 pkg marmalade, coffee 12:30 pm 1 c gingered beet soup, 2 fish tacos 4:30 pm Mike's Hard Lemonade 5:15 pm Barbecue on bun, 1/2 c baked beans, 1/2 c fruit salad, 2 cucumber slices, 6-7 chocolate "chips" w/lemon curd dip, small piece lemon icebox cheesecake, scotcheroo 6:45 pm 5 oz Reserve d/Oriane Exercise: 4:50-5:40 am Jane Fonda Fat Burners video 1:30-3:00 pm (with 20 min break) Walk with client

Thurs 6 Sept

Halfway through the 4-day work week. It can end any time now. Vacation sometimes makes me crave more leisure rather than less. Guess I'll settle back into normal routines sometime soon. Tonight I need to make a lemon icebox cheesecake and a batch of the lemon curd dip for a baby shower after work tomorrow afternoon. Also I think I start voice with Mary tonight. Food: 6:45 am 1 c trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 17 g blackberries, 140 g strawberries, coffee 12:30 pm Blueberry soy shake, slice 12 grain bread, 1 tbl peanut butter, small pear 1:15 pm 1 square Lindt coffee blast bar 3:30 pm Kashi Dark Chocolate Almond chewy granola bar 7:30 pm 3.3 oz extra lean ground beef, onion bun, large cherry tomato, leaf kale 8:10 pm 2 Fit & Active fruit crisps Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am The Firm step/weight DVD 5:05-5:25 pm Walk to Suzuki 6:50-7:10 pm Walk home

Wed 4 Sept

Hippo birdie to me. Thanks so much for the cheery email - it made me smile. Hoping to make the best of the day and the upcoming year to be the best I can be. Had a lovely birthday. Michael, Kate, & Val sang Happy Birthday to me on a voice mail. We actually had another coworker's birthday lunch belatedly scheduled for today so I went out to lunch but still have my own to look forward to. Dad and I had a great birthday dinner at Red Mill. When I came home, there was a beautiful mum plant by the back door from Hartmans! Nice day. Tues 3 Sept

Chilly morning, but I suppose we may as well start getting used to it. As the Starks say, Winter is Coming. As is another year to check off the calendar, all too soon. Ah well, life goes on. OMG! This is the worst possible webinar to introduce a new email/Outlook system. The presenter is an absolute idiot who doesn't even know the system. It is IT masturbation and we are forced to watch. I survived the "training" from hell. They gave us the opportunity for an online eval immediately after - possibly a mistake as I have never rated a training so low. At one point when showing the calendar function, he was debating what to put on his schedule next month. It was all I could do not to say "Look for a new job". Food: 6:45 am Morning bun, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 99 g blackberries, coffee 11:15 am Strawberry/banana soy shake, slice 12 grain toast, 1 tbl almond butter, Zestar apple, 1 tsp cinnamon sugar 2:15 pm 100 cal pack Snapeas Exercise: 4:45-5:55 am Jane Fonda Complete Workout 4:55-5:25 pm Head-clearing walk

02 September 2013

Mon 2 Sept

Nice to have a quiet day with no work to get in the way (other than laundry). The cool weather is a nice break as well with highs of 66 predicted here. Maybe we'll get out for a hike after visiting Grandma. Grandma looked really good today, sitting up straight without props and much more with it. She mentioned again feeling sorry about Mick so I told her he was alive and well and she had been mistaken. She was surprised but relieved. She sends you her love. She was quite cold today with the sudden weather change so that her hands and face felt chilly. I was thinking she might appreciate a pair of your hand-knitted arm warmers for Christmas. Cracked open the bottle of Del Fosse Reserve D'Oriane tonight in honor of the passing of Msr. Del Fosse as noted in their recent email. Ahi tuna steaks were on sale at Copps so I used Cook's Illustrated for a good recipe for pan searing them so the inside stayed rare. Nice dinner. No canola oil in the house and craving a brownie. Found a mug brownie recipe using melted butter. Food: 7:30 am Laura's oatmeal w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c blueberries, soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 99 g blackberries, coffee 12:30 pm Vanilla soy shake, slice 12-grain toast, 1 tsp soft margarine, 1/2 tbl Rose's lime marmalade, 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese w/chives 6:15 pm 4 oz pan seared sesame ahi tuna steak, 2/3 c heirloom rice blend, 1 c steamed sugar snap peas, 5 oz Reserve d'Oriane wine 7:15 pm Mug brownie Exercise: 1:45-3:50 pm Hiking Rib Mt plus tower
