Thurs 30 Sept

Kind of tired today in spite of a relaxing evening yesterday and a full night's sleep. Muscles are a little sore all over. I have a tinge of sniffles which may be a contributing factor, but doesn't feel like that will get worse. Just need the usual lots of water and rest, I guess.

Birthday lunch today at Tempura House for me and two other September birthday girls. I was a little late getting a date to them, so we combined everyone together.

They had cubed, cooked turkey in packages by the lunch meat this week on sale cheap. It called out to me to make an easy casserole with whole grain pasta, cheese, and veggies. It was as yummy as I thought it might be.

11:45 am 2 crab rangoon, 3/4 c garlic green beans, 1/2 c lo mein noodles, small servings eggplant dish and beef/veggie dish, 1/2 c chocolate pudding

Wed 29 Sept

What time of day is your century race? Do you think you might feel up to going out for supper after you finish and maybe have a nap? Dad and I could come down and run some errands while you rest and pick you up in the later afternoon for supper and whatever errands you have energy to run. Let me know what you think. You deserve a good meal after riding 100 miles!

We'll sort of plan on coming down in mid-afternoon and getting the other grocery or miscellaneous shopping runs taken care of first. Let me know if there's anything you need from TJ or Woodman's. You can give us a call when you get back to town and let us know how you're doing, whether you need a nap, and whether you need us to just pick up some takeout and bring it to you while you crash. If you're up for dinner out and Costco, we'll push you in a wheelchair if you need it. (We've got experience!)

The boys are working late so I put an apple crisp in the oven and am enjoying a glass of Riesling while my pork chop grills and my little sweet potato bakes in the microwave. I have a little leftover acorn squash to top off a lovely little solitary meal. I'll start making my packing list, and maybe put in a movie if I have leftover time. An occasional evening of solitude is a gift.

Food:

7:15 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, coffee
12:15 pm 4 oz chicken breast, 1 oz Swiss cheese, lettuce leaf, 1/2 c mushrooms, kaiser bun, 1 c fruit salad, few bites of communal piece of chocolate cake

Tues 28 Sept

Your mother is experiencing an energy crisis. I really dragged on parts of the hike yesterday and this morning I pooped out during the side series of Pilates mat; I had intended to do the whole tape through pushups but I just died. Guess it's time to listen to my body. I don't want to push too hard and injure myself before the trip.

Judging from your Facebook post, looks like your century ride did get moved to Saturday? What time will you be busy? Would you prefer we not come down this weekend?

Even if we did church on Saturday night, it would be rushed to come on Sunday since we need to be back by 6 pm for choir. We will be missing choir for 2 weeks subsequent, so we really can't skip this weekend. Guess we'll just have to wait to see you til after Galapagos. Sigh! As for apples, I guess you'll have to resort to the Farmer's Market. Sorry.

Mon 27 Sept

A full week of work this week, but filled also with the excitement of packing and getting ready to leave next week Friday. We bought neoprene gloves and socks to keep feet warm when snorkeling and kayaking in cooler waters. We really appreciated those things when kayaking up north, and we were able to pick some up at Fleet Farm that weren't outrageously expensive. ($10.99 for gloves, $18.99 for socks.)

I was able to download North Shore pics to the iPad and share them with Grandma. She was able to see them pretty well. It's a nice photo display tool as well as accessing Internet while traveling (with a bigger, easier-to-see screen than the iPhone).

It got very dark on us while hiking so that the downhill trek was actually a bit dangerous as it was hard to see the loose rocks. We rewarded our valor with a particularly nummy dinner at the Dane.

Sun 26 Sept

Worked hard at ballet this morning; felt good. I can, however, feel my shoulders and arms from kayaking.

I will eat one of the small sugared cake donuts I brought home from World's Best Donuts, but I hope to limit myself so that's the only junky thing today.

Wishing you a welcome home when you get there. I did give in to one more junky thing; I ate the other half of my chocolate decadence dessert, but it was a very small piece to start with so it was only a few bites. Lunch was light, not yet sure what I'm making for supper. Thinking of checking the rotisserie chicken carcass to see if it's still okay for soup.

Chicken carcass had stayed too long in the fridge, alas! I never seem to be in the mood for soup soon enough after eating the chicken.

Food:

8:00 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, cinnamon-sugared cake donut, coffee
12:00 pm 1 crepe, 1 scrambled egg, 1/2 c veggie mix, coffee

Sat 25 Sept

Long time to go through all the emails that accumulate when one takes even a short vacation. I didn't really bother to check often or delete junk while I was gone.

Today has been a bad girl day of eating primarily junk. Most of vacation, I ate pretty decently if a bit too much, but today was mostly sugar and crap. I promise to do better tomorrow. I guess I felt virtuous after all the exercise yesterday with a 2-hour hill hike in the morning, a 2-hour sea kayak adventure in the afternoon, and an hour of yoga to cap off the day.

22 September 2010

Wed 22 Sept

Yay for vacation, even short ones. Looking forward to three nights at the North Shore and hoping for at least daytime clear weather, at least some of the time, so we can enjoy hiking among the brightly colored maples and sea kayaking on Superior as well as excellent food and relaxation. Forecasts are primarily for rain, especially tomorrow, but let's hope the forecasters are wrong.

It was nice to chat with you yesterday, short though it was. I just love having you closer to home, and hearing the joy in your tweets and comics as you reconnect with Madison. Love you so much!

Tues 21 Sept

Running a bit late this morning. Legs tired from workout. Raining, but hopefully it will rain itself out so it won't be so wet up north.

Fixed the date on Sunday's post. Guess I was really in outer space when I posted as if it was February. That sometimes happens to me when I'm writing checks, too. I will write a completely random month for the date. I don't think it's Alzheimer's cos I've been doing it occasionally for years.

Mon 20 Sept

Only a two-day work week this week, and as yet, not heavily scheduled. Hoping to hike this evening if weather allows.

We both lacked the motivation to hike tonight. Blame it on the clouds and threat of rain, but really we're just tired and need a night of rest.

Wish we had some of that beautiful weather up here, though I am thoroughly enjoying a night off. Made fresh, homemade applesauce and acorn squash for supper. Will probably start gathering things to pack for the North Shore since I have voice until late tomorrow.

Taking Grandma down to LaCrosse today for the annual apple run. Fayze's for lunch and buying lots of good apples. Can't wait for fresh, warm applesauce with dinners. Hope the day is sunshiny.

Unfortunately I didn't get your comment before we left, but maybe we can find a way to get you some good apples soon anyway. We should be able to come down to Madison on Oct 2 so we can arrange to have time to go to an orchard nearby to stock up. Do some research on a good place within reasonable driving distance and we'll make it a plan! There should still be plenty of good ones available then.

Today is the start of Oktoberfest in Munich. We'll have to drink a beer to toast the season tonight, though I started last night with a Sam Adams Oktoberfest that was very good.

I was tired this morning and really didn't want to get up early to exercise. I plan to bake a mocha walnut pudding cake this afternoon after work to take to Rick & Liz's house for post-fish fry noms, so I've promised myself to exercise while it's in the oven.

Found a great place for a baked fish "fry" out in Custer. An Irish-themed bar called Clancy's with a huge crowd and great food. The meritage went well with the rich chocolate cake.

Oh joy, rain for Lion's Camp. Unless it clears up and the ground dries out a bit, will likely be a mostly indoors day. Would like to hike around the lake, even if it's slow-paced with overweight clients. Would also like to get out on the lake in a pedal boat or kayak. May have to wait til next week at the North Shore, though.

Call us on your new phone when you get it or send a text so we know you're up and running.

Tired. Long day at camp but good day all the same. Will earn comp time for extra hours.

Saved a copy of a 90-second head massage technique to get rid of a headache. Looks like good technique, so I'm probably going to email it to several folks, including you. Always nice to have a med-free method of getting rid of a headache, literally at your fingertips.

Bought two goodies at the Employee's Foundation bake sale this morning, but so far have refrained from eating them. We'll see how long I hold out. I bought a slice of a Bundt streusel coffee cake and a scotcheroo.

So tired. Grandma's eye appointment went well and we had a nice dinner out. Gathered bingo prizes for camp tomorrow and dropped off something Grandma bought for Leone.

We will try to go to Wausau after work tonight to the AT&T store where we originally got our phones. It is a full store, not just a little branch like the Point store, so I'm hoping we'll get more knowledgeable service. Hope you've selected an acceptable phone from their line. If we can get the Nokia 2680, we certainly will.

Sun 12 Sept

I just found out that today is Grandparent's Day. If you find time this afternoon, perhaps you could give Grandma a phone call to say hello. 715-344-2427. I know she'd appreciate it. I suspect the Assisted Living makes a deal of Grandparent's Day so she's probably more aware than we that it is today.

Could not resist the bakery at Panacea yesterday so I suppose I'll be a little up on calories or have to compensate in other food areas til I eat my fill of the goodies. How could I pass up homemade prune ponczkas?

Found a new favorite concoction at Olympia. I get 1 crepe and have them fill it with a scrambled egg and veggies. Nom, nom.

Will look into getting you onto our AT&T plan ASAP; sorry I forgot. Dad sent you the link to our account which shows the choice of phones. As soon as you get back to us, we'll initiate to get you set up.

Sorry there's so much difficulty getting onto the AT&T website. Hope we can sort it out very soon for you.

Getting ready to go do the Walk for Hope for Suicide Prevention/Awareness in the rainy weather. This is the 5th year (I think) that I have done this, and Dad has done it with me for at least the last couple years. Hartmans also participate, so we usually walk with them. It's a mere 3 miles so even in the rain, it's not too bad. It rained on us one other year and we didn't melt.

Wasn't too soggy for the walk. Enjoyed chatting with Hartmans as we walked. Hope you don't get too soggy at the Farmer's Market.

Fri 10 Sept

TGIF! Seems like a long week even though it was a short one with the Monday holiday. Schedule has been busy so I'm tired at the end of each day, and I'm always a little less energetic when I make the commitment to keep the calories in check. Today I'm (probably) going to lunch with Bill Pyke to celebrate my birthday, so I'll have to work harder to order smart again. We're supposed to go to Cafe 27 and this is good soup weather, so that may be my choice.

I do hope that we can hike tonight. Timing didn't work out yesterday for either of us, and we had to do veggies, too.

Thurs 9 Sept

Not feeling on top of my game today. A little achy. Hopefully it will pass. Jordan came up to me while I was doing the Pilates exercise where you are on your stomach with hands behind your back arching in a stretch. He came up nose to nose with me while I was stretching. Disconcerting. Of course he stayed there long enough to get whapped by my arm when the next exercise, rocking on your stomach, came up. He was a bit disconcerted at that.

Had a really nice online chat with Phil at lunch. He and Leigha and Lennon have moved into Michele's spare bedroom to be live-in helpers in her recovery. They are such cool people!

Unaccountably tired tonight. Deb and Chuck say hi and hope to see you Saturday at Farmer's Market.

So maybe there is a reason I'm tired. Added up my calories after supper and I'm considerably low for the day. Good excuse to eat a couple of Sweet Martha's cookies. Hmm, not many left and I haven't eaten any since we got home....

Food:

7:15 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, coffee

Wed 8 Sept

Gotta get a card and small gift for Hartman's anniversary today. We can't hike tonight because Mary switched my Suzuki night this week, so I should have time to hit Target after work.

I feel much better after a good night's sleep today. I was really cranky and tired last night.

Read a new hint for curbing the impulse to over-snack. Before you decide to snack, you need to visualize and think about your last meal, how satisfied you felt, textures/tastes, etc. It was helpful this afternoon, but I did break down and eat a brownie when I came home because I was a bit hungry and supper will probably be around an hour yet. I have put back about 7 pounds from my ideal weight loss goal, and I need to stop the gain now or risk putting back a whole lot more. I need to go back into full weight loss mode, not just trying to establish a good maintenance routine (which wasn't working).

Food:

7:15 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 c cantaloupe, coffee
11:45 am Chocolate soy shake, slice Trader Joe's multigrain fiber toast, 1 tbl almond butter, 100 g blueberries

Tues 7 Sept

I had a birthday package from Hartmans waiting when I got home, but I was too tired to open it til this morning. Kathy put together a package with a bamboo veggie brush, a reusable grocery bag that packs into its own little pouch so you can always have it with you, and two really nice dish cloths. Fun!

Really enjoyed seeing you and having you with us for dinner last night. Hope your bread turns out great with the new bread flour.

Wow, am I tired today. Didn't help to have a non-stop busy schedule, but not getting enough sleep last night was also a contributing factor, I'm sure.

Food:

7:15 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 med cantaloupe, coffee
11:45 am 1 c miso soup, 1 c iceberg lettuce, 2 tbl soy ginger dressing, 2 pc California roll, 3 fried gyoza, 1 large tempura shrimp, 1 tempura onion ring, 1/2 c white rice, green tea

Mon 6 Sept

Slept in til 8 am today and got busy putting things away, so decided to eat breakfast before I exercise for a change today. I've read differing opinions on whether it's wise to exercise first thing in the morning without first breaking your fast in some way. It's never been a problem for me since I hit the exercises straight out of bed. I'm sometimes a little hungry toward the end, but I've never felt my energy levels were so much a function of food since they seem to vary somewhat naturally.

I had thought of driving down to Madison today to deliver your cookies, but we're going out to eat this evening with Grandma and Michael for my birthday and it would make the day quite rushed. We put your Sweet Martha's in the freezer so they will stay somewhat fresh when we are able to get them to you. Looks like the best time for us to visit Madison will be next Saturday, Sept 11. We will be doing the Walk for Hope in the morning, but we're usually done before noon. We can catch a little of Panacea on Sunday if desired.

I liked doing the workout at 10 am with breakfast in my belly. I had a lot of energy to work out, but it's hard to say if that is due to fueling up with breakfast or just having a much more reasonable start time to the day. Unfortunately, exercising at 10 am isn't a reasonable alternative on weekdays until I get to retire.

Wish you could come out to dinner with us tonight. Grandma and Michael will both be with us. We'll miss you.

Sun 5 Sept

Home from a lovely overnight in Mpls. Had a great lunch of scallop and sweet corn tacos at Highland Grill with a free dessert of mascarpone cheesecake with balsamic drizzled fresh strawberries that Dad and I shared. Got Grandma a replacement for her talking clock that went kaput, got a sun hat for Galapagos at REI, (no small dress so I'll keep the size medium), splurged on an iPad at Apple Store so we'll have a device to back up our photos on the trip as well as an easier device to stay wired on other vacation experiences. Dinner was at Cafe Ena, a Latin fusion place in Kurt and Barb's old neighborhood. Had more delicious scallops with coconut risotto and pineapple salsa with chocolate orange torta for dessert. The Sofitel left a lovely tray with three little tasty tidbits and a nice birthday note in our room.

The fair was very nice. On and off clouds kept it from getting too warm, and the sun felt good when it did peek out. We had crepes for breakfast and a shared peach-stuffed scone. Morning snack was a couple glasses of white milk with Sweet Martha's cookies. We took two containers out to the car along with some heavier items we had already accumulated, including the second and third books of the Ice and Fire series I found at a bookseller, and a copy of Shogun just like the one that Colin kept. We had one of the totally awesome huge peaches at lunchtime, and later shared some Jamaican noodles with loads of big chunks of veggies and a sundae with frozen yogurt, sliced peaches, and crushed gingersnaps. We each had a small ear of roasted corn, too. Had a glass of chocolate milk in the afternoon for a pick-me-up, and another glass of white milk with more cookies on the way back to the car for the final trip home. I was pleased that I got my 5 servings of fruits and veggies between the asparagus in my breakfast crepe, the whole peach, the peaches in the scone and sundae, the veggies in the noodles, and the corn. We avoided eating anything deep-fried, so the only real indulgences were the cookies and the quantity of milk.

I had an apple cinnamon scone and a large glass of water upon return home.

Sat 4 Sept

Happy Birthday to me! It was so nice to hear your voice this morning, sleepy though you sounded. Hope the con is a good experience overall, or at least seems so once you get some sleep! Looking forward to a nice weekend in Minneapolis with the fair. Hope to see you very soon, so you get some cookies while they're still fresh!

I also decided that on your birthday, you get to have a brownie for dessert with breakfast! Even if the jeans are a little snug.

Fri 3 Sep

Last day to be 54. Oh, well. at least I'm still having fun. I was a bad girl and skipped out on exercise this morning, but I allow myself one day off during the week occasionally. I hope to hit the excellent exercise room at the Sofitel tomorrow so I'll make it up then. And if there's nothing special going on this evening, I may through in my Cardio Hula tape or some other less frequently chosen DVD.

The chilly breeze through the bathroom window this morning caused me to put back the capris I had chosen and go for long jeans. As long as it's not the final goodbye for nice warm weather, the occasional cool day is a treat. This weekend is forecast to be lovely for the fair.

I don't care if it tastes pretty much the same as regular, there's something wrong about yellow watermelon.

Thurs 2 Sep

Glad we went hiking last night. It was a beautiful evening and today looks like probable rain all day. I'm happy the weather forecast for the weekend (and the fair) looks awesome - sunny and low 70s.

Barb had to cancel for hiking tonight already due to need to work late. Rain has been on again, off again so we may not try it since we went last night. Dad is supposed to go to the ACT board meeting anyway.

Nummy summer veggies for dinner tonight. Used some of that tenderloin, seasoned with your rub for about half an hour before cutting it up, and chopped up pattypan squash, green bell pepper, some kind of small but sweet red pepper, 1 jalapeno, onion, and tomato. Stir fried all with fresh lemon basil, pepper from the grinder. Also roasted some of the CSA potatoes tossed in pesto and a chunk of tonight's CSA spaghetti squash with seasoned salt and pepper. I'm full!

Wed 1 Sep

We had more rain in the night, but I believe today is just supposed to be partly cloudy. My mom has a care conference at Oakridge today. I missed the last one when my schedule was just too busy and I didn't even have time to call them to reschedule. I think I got her insurance straightened out to pay for her prescriptions with the new provider.

My shoulder gave me some pain last night when I slept in the wrong position; took awhile to ease when I readjusted. Seems better now and didn't give me any trouble with the Weights workout.
