Mon 29 Feb
Happy Leap Day. Just realized today that it must have been torture for Kathy Hartman as a kid waiting anxiously for her birthday to come (on Mar 1). Every fourth year she would have had to wait an extra day. When you're little, that can seem an eternity. Now, however, it's a blessed respite as she has an extra day before she turns 60.
I was so gypped at the gym today. All the treadmills downstairs were in use so I opted for an elliptical-like machine instead and was really tired after a half hour of using different muscles. I didn't check til after Body Pump, but apparently none of the steps on the new machine registered on my Fitbit, so it's like I just didn't work out for that half hour from the Fitbit's point of view. If I want to register my 10,000 today, I'll have to walk those steps all over again. On the amusing side, when I moved out of child's pose the last time, I noticed a black spot on my mat under where my belly had been, and it turned out to be a large dead fly. I must have crushed it.

Power outage in the middle of the night, around 3:30 am as close as I can estimate. Came back on at 7:00 am just as we were trying to figure out how to heat water on the stove to make coffee. Really a pretty minimal disruption. We'll even be able to shower and I can dry my hair as usual.
Choir and church are the only obligations today. I was awake a bit in the night and figured out how I want to cook my fresh fish in St Maarten. I'm going to pack a Ziploc with a couple of sheets of folded parchment paper and foil and look up the recipe before I leave so I'm good to go.

Once again, time is starting to win the battle against winter, however slowly. I do hope we get the warm day today they have been promising. Having a cold makes it more difficult to tolerate being chilly.

Thurs 25 Feb
Didn't walk with Kathy this morning because she is flying out East to visit Charlie for the weekend. It is good to have a day off as I didn't sleep very soundly last night due to the well-developed cold. Medicine helped me to breathe, but I had a hard time settling into sleep. I will walk to St Steve's for reading tutor and to get my hair cut this afternoon. I feel a bit weak so a long walk would have stretched me to the limit.
I have new hair again, or rather an approximation of my old hair again, but this time with more body. Sue took a long time cutting and shaping it, and we are both quite happy with the results. I like it. I was hoping to walk a bit more to go to Dollar Tree for baby cards to accompany the gifts, but the wind is wickedly cold and I really didn't care to brave it any longer than necessary.
Date night at Michele's to debut my new look.

Coming down with a cold that hit in the night. Currently sucking on the first Cold-Eze of the day and hope to remember many more plus copious quantities of water to head it off at the pass if possible. At least if it does take hold, it should be done by the time we go to St Maarten.

Today Bob is struggling to set his schedule to fit everything in so I'm not likely to have him sitting around with me all day Tuesday this week. Michael, however, is planning to come paint but he usually stays out from underfoot unless I need to get into the basement where he's painting. Not sure of my agenda for the day, but may try to walk to the Holly Shoppe to look for baby gifts for Rose and Leigh's new babies. Found a couple of very cute little knitted hat/booties sets.

Once again, this month is flying by. How strange that even the winter months that used to drag are now moving so quickly.
Had the strangest dream just before waking this morning that I suddenly had a little toddler in my care who didn't seem to belong to anyone else. He just sort of appeared there at about 18 months old, was very sweet, but there was no one who we would return him to after watching him for a short time. Made me realize I'm not really prepared to start over with full responsibility for raising a child again, though I'd certainly step up if the situation required it. It was a disconcerting dream, to say the least.

Seems strange to have a couple of weeks before St Maarten with nothing special on the schedule at all. I suppose I could count the chili supper at church tonight, but that is more just something we will participate in if nothing better comes along. The Home Show is happening today at SentryWorld; it normally doesn't really interest me, but if Dad wants to go, it would be something to do. I can always fall back on some of my "projects" like scanning photos or going through my armoire to sort out clothes I don't use. That actually sounds promising.
Apparently I only vaguely remember how to knit/purl. I began the "simple" hat pattern that Laura recommended, but it is not appearing to develop as it is supposed to.
Took a walk with Dad through melty puddles to test the waterproofing of our boots. Mine passed the test pretty well with one little incursion of dampness, but Dad's right boot leaked pretty thoroughly. He will need new boots or some method of finding/repairing the leak.

A little bit of slightly warmer weather in the near future, very welcome. I don't expect to wear my snow pants on my walk with Kathy this morning. I may even wear my "new" hiking boots to start breaking them in. This afternoon I plan to start a packing list and collection for St Maarten. I've already tried on swimsuits and set my rash guard gear aside.
Bit of a disappointment this morning discovered on my walk w/Kathy. I wore the $30 hiking boots I had purchased several years ago that are identical to the good Vasques I have been wearing since before France so I could start breaking them in for Scotland. I had noticed on the tag that the previous owner had actually worn them for a year before deciding they were uncomfortable, a fact I had previously missed. I thought they had only been worn a couple of times. I noticed that there is a lot of scuffing on the toes, more I think than my own boots which I've worn extensively for about 8 years. When I walked in them, I realize that the previous owner rolled to the outside of the foot on the right and the shoes are broken down there and actually bulge a little around the outside of the right foot. I had to retie them a couple of times to keep them tight enough and consciously roll toward the arch on the right foot while I walked which is unacceptable for a long hiking excursion. At least I now have enough time to order new boots and break them in for Scotland.

Tues 16 Feb
Had a really nice dinner last night with Michael and Taylor, and nothing particular on the schedule today except getting over to vote in the judge election. Need to get John Hartman's birthday gift delivered, and this evening Bob and I should go to the store to pick out paint colors for the entranceway and basement.
Bob chose today as his morning to get things done at his computer, unfortunately for me on the day I like to think of as my "alone time" day. I think it was a bit frustrating for both of us.
Had a brief walk to Jefferson School to vote, then ran a bunch of errands.

Had a little trouble finding the party last night thanks to a GPS that didn't know where the address should be found, but once we got there, it was very nice. Tom Girolamo makes homemade pizzas in his wood fired oven, and we chatted with L'Aura and Gregg and an old ballet student of Bob's.
First lunchtime soy shake in a long time. Hope my stomach doesn't have trouble readapting.
Nice dinner with Michael and Taylor tonight. Everything turned out very well and they liked all the dishes. Michael was impressed that I put Anna Mae's mocha brandy frosting on the brownies.

Had a really lovely Valentine's dinner last night at La Brioche in Madison. They had a $25 special with a specialty salad (in our case, berry), entree and dessert. I had Salmon Oscar which was really well-prepared and Bob had a chicken pasta w/sun-dried tomatoes and prosciutto. Delicious! Tonight we will go to a party at Tom Girolamo's after choir and actually be social for awhile!
Had an opportunity to talk with Pat D'Ercole after Mass today about being a part of the new Suzuki Baby class to include at-risk pregnant teens. I'm excited to be a part of the project

We will be heading down to Madison today, to bother our daughter for a meal from her test-writing day and to do some shopping and general getting-out-of-town. Bob just found out from Dan that Catherine had a life insurance policy with some excess after bills will paid and he will be receiving $2000 as his share. A nice little windfall with St Maarten and Scotland on the horizon and work a bit in the winter doldrums.

I get a massage this afternoon! I haven't had one for eons it seems, and I'm looking forward to it. I also want to ask her if it's true she gives a discount to over-55's as I may have an incentive to go more frequently.
Massage is good!!!! Following it with a wine tasting at the new Stevens Point Winery is also good. I am happy.

Feeling better today than yesterday, but still not 100%. Hard to believe that 3 small glasses of wine, with food, and a small tot of whiskey could make me feel so awful and still be affecting me somewhat more than 24 hours later. I guess it's a warning for Scotland not to overdo the distillery tastings or pub visits.
Evening of Chocolate Decadence tonight. Guess I'll be a little more cautious, given my reaction to over-indulgence on Tuesday.
Food:

100 years ago, my daddy was born into this world. Happy 100th, Dad!
I had too much wine (and a tot of bourbon) at the Rockman class last night, and I could still feel it this morning. Couldn't bring myself to get out of bed and to the shower in time to go to the gym, and frankly wasn't up for Body Pump either. So I'm being a bad girl and taking a free morning today instead. It's Ash Wednesday, so I will eat a smaller breakfast, get some exercise done at home so I can make up for what I'm missing on the treadmill and class. We'll go to church after Bootstrap and Bob's work this evening.
Made up my exercise with Jessica.

Lots of fun things to do this week: Rockman's cooking class, retiree lunch, Evening of Chocolate Decadence, massage. Looking forward to it.
Enjoyed watching the Super Bowl yesterday as it was a good game. Didn't hurt to have Peyton Manning break Brett Favre's win record either.
Was able to increase the length of my run/jog intervals to 4+ min today for the first time.
Goodness, I no longer seem to know how to make popcorn. I got Dad's popcorn maker and put it on the stove, put in a little oil and let it get hot, then added a small amount of popcorn and put the lid on. I stirred it on and off but nothing seemed to be happening, and eventually brown smoke started to come out of the vents so I took it to the sink and ran water in. Either the popcorn was old and no longer worked or I did something wrong because it sure didn't look like popcorn. Sigh.

It always seems strange when we go to church on Saturday evening and don't have anything specific scheduled on Sunday. Sleeping in and taking it easy on Sunday morning just doesn't feel right.
I discovered a half dozen of David's hot cross buns tightly wrapped in the freezer yesterday. They are still delicious with just 20 sec in the microwave.
Took a little 20-min walk to get some fresh air in the not-too-cold afternoon.

Should be a very chilly morning for my walk with Kathy today. Considering wearing my snow pants to keep my legs nice and toasty. We'll see.
Seeing the dermatologist for the once-over this afternoon. Skipped last year, so I hope he doesn't find anything of concern (or expense).
I think I walked a bit more slowly today in my snow pants and winter boots, but we still had a lovely walk. I really enjoy these weekly walks with Kathy.

Turns out that most of the snowfall was likely down when Dad and I shoveled by hand, at least so it appears from inside. He is out with the snowblower this morning clearing the huge pile left in the driveway by the snowblower and any remaining snow on the rest of the surfaces.
I have to miss my gym day today because I'm going for an annual eye exam. I'm seeing Dr Slezak at Ministry because my insurance no longer covers Eye Clinic of WI. I expect to be yelled at thoroughly for wearing my contact when it was damaged and forcing myself to remove it half at a time when I was far from medical assistance. I know I was extremely fortunate not to have damaged the eye. It will be interesting to get his take on the monovision option I have been doing since then.
Food:

Happy Groundhog Day! No shadows visible here. It's just after 8 am and the predicted snowstorm hasn't started yet. Schools were called off for today, so kids are feeling like it's a holiday. It's Tuesday, so it's my unscheduled day so I feel kind of holiday-like also. I slept in til 7:45 because I stayed up past 10:30 to finish reading The Martian. I enjoyed the book once they diversified from just his personal log to include the happenings at NASA and with the crew. The story was too one-dimensional for the first part, even though the premise was good. It was fun to follow his creativity in dealing with adversity; I strongly doubt whether I would have been able to keep going as long as he did.
Went out shortly after 2:00 to shovel what is already down, and glad to get the first layer off so we can just deal with what continues to fall. Not good for more than about 2000 steps, but certainly some aerobic exercise.
Food:
8:05 am 1 c Quaker Oat Squares, 1/2 c original soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, coffee

Another month marches by. We have several medical appointments this week: I see the eye doctor and the dermatologist and Bob has his annual physical. Hopefully most of these expenses are covered under insurance as preventative care. I would prefer not to incur additional large expenses with paying off the St Maarten trip and saving for the food. I started looking into a Scotland hiking trip which might be a possibility for this summer, but it would probably need to be scheduled soon to lock in airfare and a spot on the roster. It is an independent hiking trip operated by Mac's Adventure, and I would tack on 3 days in Inverness at the end since we're already over there.
Put a pork roast in the crock pot this morning to make pulled pork.
