Mon 30 Jun

My usual Friday breakfast client rescheduled to today. We'll see if she shows up. I will prepare by just having fruit and coffee at home with a fall-back Kind bar at the office if needed. I'm not holding my breath that she'll remember. I suspect she's started drinking in full again. (Follow-up note: she was there.) A to0-many-treats day. Retirement cake at morning break, s'mores at afternoon break. Oh, my! Food: 6:45 am 1/4 large cantaloupe, 100 g raspberries, coffee 8:15 am 2 eggs, 3 slices bacon, 1 slice French toast w/butter & 1 tbl syrup, coffee 10:10 am Slice chocolate cake w/chocolate icing (retirement celebration) 12:05 pm Vanilla soy shake, chocolate raspberry croissant (from Batch), plum 2:15 pm S'more (one graham cracker, 1 marshmallow, 2 squares Hershey bar) 5:45 pm 3 oz buttermilk marinated grilled chicken breast, 1.9 oz roasted sweet potato wedges, med ear grilled corn Exercise: 4:55-5:45 am Jane Fonda Complete Workout video

It can be so hard to get through exercising when it is hot, stuffy, and sweaty in the basement. Dad is going to put up the wall-mounted fan for me again which helped last summer. Hope it helps because I really had to fight with myself to not quit my workout this morning when I was drooping. Dad and I walked downtown to the "new" 1-yeaar-old wine bar on Main St because I had seen a sign that they are now doing brunch w/bloody Mary's, mimosas, crepes, and quiche. His food was pre-made but freshly heated and plated and the crepes were very nice. I had a kir royale and Dad had a regular mimosa. You can get all-you-can-drink for $20 each, but we were satisfied with one each. It was a nice relaxing Sunday that may happen more often. Also nice to be able to walk there and back. Food: 8:30 am Chocolate chip danish, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 102 g raspberries, coffee 12:45 pm 2 crepes, eggs, bacon in one, cranberry/brie in the other, kir royale 5:55 pm Ham/gruyere croissant from Batch, salad w/fresh greens, 5 pea pods, 1/2 large tomato, 1/2 c sliced mushrooms Exercise: 6:50-7:40 am Ballet DVD 7:40-8:10 am Cardio Dance DVD 12:00-12:15 pm Walk to Indulgence 1:15-1:30 pm Walk home 4:45-5:00 pm Bike to Kmart with Dad 5:30-5:45 pm Bike home

End of the first real month of summer already (or almost). Damn, it flies by fast! Two more long-time co-workers are heading into retirement. I am now the penultimate longest employee at Gilfry. Yikes! Today's wellness challenge is 15 min of arm exercises, e.g. free weights, pushups, etc. After breakfast. Food: 6:55 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 100 g raspberries, coffee Exercise: 8:00-8:20 am Jessica Smith Arm Workout YouTube

Fri 27 Jun

My breakfast client was a no-show this morning, so I had my fallback - oatmeal from Starbucks at my desk. Convenient that Starbucks is right across the street from Olympia, so I get some to go if she doesn't show up. Would have liked to drive back to the Pinewood tonight to try the fish fry, but I called them after Dad got home late and the earliest available table would have been at 7:30. This was at 5:45 and I didn't think I could wait that long to eat so we deferred to leftover grilled chicken drumsticks. We have a wellness challenge at work with a different thing each day for a month. Today's challenge was to eat a new fruit or vegetable. This is very difficult for us as we have eaten pretty much all the fruits and veggies available around here. I tried Trig's and Aldi's and couldn't really find anything that was really new to us. I opted to cook up the bag of TJ's shelled edamame as something we haven't really cooked at home before as my best effort. Good enough. And, BTW, they were delicious. Food: 6:45 am 1/4 large cantaloupe, 102 g raspberries, coffee 8:30 am Starbucks oatmeal w/dried blueberries & nut mix 11:30 am Vanilla soy shake, 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese, fresh chives, small piece Costco coffee cake, plum 12:30 pm 3 mint M&Ms 3:00 pm 2 Kopiko hard candies 6:00 pm 2 cold grilled chicken drumsticks, 2 wedges watermelon, 1/2 c TJ's shelled edamame 7:00 pm 5 oz chenin blanc Exercise: 4:55-5:30 am Jessica Smith Stride & Strength YouTube 5:30-5:45 am Jessica Smith Power Walk Quickie YouTube 4:10-4:40 pm Neighborhood walk

June is flying by. Summer finally arrived, and now it is doing its best to speed by as quickly as possible, but I guess that's nothing new. I so enjoy being able to go for walks in the evening without bundling up and shivering, and these lovely mornings listening to the birds sing outside the open windows. Summer is sweet. Food: 6:50 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 101 g raspberries, coffee 11:45 am Vanilla soy shake, slice Costco coffee cake, large plum Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am Kristi Yamaguchi workout DVD

Tues 24 Jun

I learned on public radio yesterday that it was the true Midsummer's Eve, the eve of St. Jean Baptiste Day. It is also when the summer moon is high and there is a lot of honey in the bees' hives. It was called the Mead Moon because they used the honey to make mead, and this is also the origin of the phrase "honey moon". Some author said, "Midsummer's night is not long, but it sets many a cradle rocking." We have a fitness challenge at work this summer running from this past Monday for four weeks. Every day they have a different healthy task to accomplish. Today it was 15 min of lower body work, e.g. squats, leg lifts, etc. Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 extra large cantaloupe, 101 g raspberries, coffee 12:00 pm Vanilla soy shake, slice Costco coffee cake, large plum 2:45 pm 100 cal pack dark chocolate pomegranate 5:10 pm .5 oz Way Better sprouted chips 7:55 pm 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese w/fresh chives, 1/2 large tomato, 1/8 angel food cake, 1/2 c sliced strawberries, 1/2 tsp sugar Exercise: 4:50-5:10 am Jessica Smith lower body workout YouTube 5:10-5:50 am Jessica Smith Latin Spice Walk YouTube 5:35-6:00 pm Walk to Pilates 6:00-7:15 pm Joan's Pilates class 7:15-7:40 pm Walk home

Mon 23 Jun

Tired this morning, not sure why. Perhaps the antipasto supper last night wasn't quite enough to fuel me through the night to the morning workout. Apparently a friend of Michael's was drugged and raped this weekend. She had been at a bar and is currently in the hospital. Picked up a store-bought angel food cake at Copps to go with some of our Farmer's Market strawberries for dessert. Yum!!! Food: 6:45 am Slice Costco coffee cake, 1/4 extra large cantaloupe, 102 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm Strawberry/banana soy shake, small scone, 151 g strawberries 12:45 pm 2 Delta cookies 4:45 pm 1 (the last!) I was plagued by a quite large, fast centipede in the basement this morning. I never did catch him. The worst was when he came out of hiding directly at me while I was on my back on the mat. I opted not to finish the mat exercises in ballet since I missed him again. Oh, my! What a lovely supper! We did an antipasto picnic-style at the table w/Prosecco, wonderful prosciutto, morel/leek cheese, wild ramp soft spreadable goat cheese, truffle spreadable French cheese, toasted ciabatta crackers, Way Better sprouted chips, and a wonderful salad of fresh lettuce, spinach, fresh tomato, strawberries, pea pods, & cilantro, mostly courtesy of the Green Bay Farmer's Market. Food: 7:35 am Lemon-filled croissant-type pastry, 1/4 extra large cantaloupe, 102 g blackberries, coffee 12:00 pm 2 large slices Fun Guy pizza (mushrooms, caramelized onions, spinach) 7:00 pm 5 oz Prosecco, salad, 3 thin slices prosciutto, assorted cheeses & crackers, sprouted chips Exercise: 5:50-6:35 am Ballet DVD 6:35-7:20 am Jessica Smith Belly, Buns & Thighs YouTube

Sat 21 Jun

Happy summer solstice! Had a lovely dinner in De Pere last night and looking forward to a delicious breakfast. The people here are always so nice. Sebastian and Maria make a point of stopping by our table to say hello. The servers are always pleasant and chatty. And of course the food is outstanding. Looks a little overcast outside. Apparently it's been chilly and grey here for the last few days. I'm hoping it's not icky to walk the Farmer's Market. Had half a Croque Madame for breakfast with a wonderful blueberry muffin, juice, and coffee. Farmer's Market is in a new place in Green Bay, in the street starting at St Brendan's and going down to Main St. Bought a flat of fresh-picked strawberries (which I need to tend to before bed tonight so they don't mold in the heat), more rhubarb, pea pods, lettuce, cilantro, mint and probably some other things I can't remember. Did a Costco run, then drove up to Door Co. Had some of my favorite fig almond gelato at the Door Co Creamery and bought some ramp goat cheese to go with the beautiful prosciutto we bought at the Farmer's Market (from the Nala Cheese people). Checked out the outfitter stores we like (no purchases). Ephraim was having their annual Fyr Ball festival so the streets were packed. We went to our new favorite pizza place in Fish Creek and had their Fun Guy pizza, half of which is in the fridge in the garage now. The weather in Green Bay and Door Co was cool (low 60s), overcast, and occasionally drizzly all day. When we got home about as far as Waupaca, it started to clear and it is 75 and sunny here. We took a lovely walk to get in the rest of our daily steps and enjoy some nice weather for a change. Just a dish of strawberries and a large, cool glass of water is enough for me for the rest of the day.

Thurs 19 Jun

Still feeling tired and wishing for a day of pure leisure. This weekend, we're going to DePere on Friday evening so Saturday will be Green Bay Farmer's Market and likely a drive into Door Co for awhile before heading home. I volunteered to help out cantoring on Sunday at 10:30 so I have to get up an hour earlier than usual on Sunday. Hopefully the energy reserves will recharge soon. Bake sale at work this morning. I indulged in an absolutely amazing slice of cheesecake with chocolate ganache topping and fresh raspberries. Painted my toenails a deep, dark purple shade to mask the bruised and blackened nails on a couple of the toes. Should look nice til nails start falling off. Ate my Pinewood leftovers for supper. Too lazy to make a veggie to go with. Glass of Prosecco will have to suffice. (It is made from grapes!) Food: 6:45 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 50 g blackberries, coffee 8:30 am Slice cheesecake w/raspberries & chocolate 12:30 pm Peach soy shake, cinnamon scone 6:00 pm 4 oz chicken breast, 1 oz goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, mashed potatoes, butter, 6 oz Prosecco 6:45 pm Jello sugar free dark chocolate pudding cup Exercise: 4:55-5:45 am Leslie Sansone 4 mile Power Walk YouTube

Happy Birthday, Michael! 23 years old today. We go to Pinewood in Mosinee tonight for the celebration dinner. Hopefully the thunderstorms will be done by then. Really wanted to do a YouTube workout this morning but the TV downstairs would not go into SmartTV mode. Long day. Glad the work part is over. Extremely delicious dinner at Pinewood, and nice time with Michael and Taylor. Also, the UPS man brought the clothes/shoes we had ordered off 6pm.com just before we left to pick them up. I threw bows on the packing boxes so he got to open them directly. Food: 6:40 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1/4 large cantaloupe, 101 g blackberries, coffee 11:45 am Blueberry soy shake, cinnamon scone, 91 g green grapes 3:00 pm Milky Way Midnight miniature, York miniature 6:15 pm Brandy old fashioned, tossed salad w/honey mustard dressing, chicken breast w/goat cheese & sundried tomatoes, mashed potatoes, few bites of brownie w/ice cream Exercise: 5:05-5:35 am Leslie Sansone Fast 2 mile walking DVD 5:37-5:43 am Intense abs set 2:50-3:10 pm Walk to pick up form from MILC at work

It seemed to get quite still and sticky after the rain stopped last night. I am appreciating ceiling fans to keep some movement in the air. We start Joan's summer Pilates class this evening. Melissa picked strawberries with her family this weekend and brought in strawberry shortcake to work this morning. I like Melissa. I was very hungry after Pilates. Turkey sausages on the grill tasted very good. Happy Father's Day to Bob! We are going to try Father Fats for brunch after church today. Michael has his birthday on Wednesday and he has chosen the Pinewood in Mosinee for his celebration. Well, so much for Father Fats. On Mother's Day, all the restaurants bend over backwards to put on specials. On Father's Day, Father Fats at least closes. We ended up at Ranchitos where we had margaritas and machaca which proved very nice and yummy. And an after-lunch nap was also most welcome. Spent some afternoon time after our walk playing dominos. We both had foggy brains from napping and needed something to get the brains in gear. Food: 8:25 am Sm piece rhubarb coffee cake, 1/4 med cantaloupe, 100 g raspberries, coffee 12:00 pm Margarita, 2 egg machaca, 2 homemade tortillas, 1/4 c refried beans, chips & salsa 1:45 pm 3 mint M&Ms 6:20 pm Caramel macchiato Greek blend yogurt Exercise: 6:35-7:25 am Ballet DVD 7:25-8:05 am Cardio Salsa DVD 3:30-4:25 pm Walk w/Dad to Schmeeckle

Nice to have a Saturday at home to attend to home chores in a leisurely way. Applied for a credit card today that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees to be used primarily in Italy. May also use it when we venture into Canada or other places outside the US as long as it doesn't charge an annual fee. Clothes drying on the line today. Nice. Had a bit of a scare when I accidentally washed my Fitbit, but it seems to be working okay. I gained about 1200 steps in the washing machine. Made a really good spaghetti sauce for dinner tonight, with some Chianti Classico DOCG. And we'll have fresh rhubarb coffee cake when it comes out of the oven. Life is good. Dad and I worked together to clean off the dining room table. Our reward is warm rhubarb cake. Food: 8:00 am Steel cut oats w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c Door Co cherries, soy milk, 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g raspberries, coffee 10:00 am Sm lemon poppyseed scone 1:15 pm Citrus Blend Greek blend Light & Fit yogurt, sm lemon poppyseed scone, 101 g blueberries 6:00 pm 1 c whole wheat spaghetti, 3 oz extra lean ground beef, 1/2 c caramelized onion/garlic sauce, red pepper, onion, ramps, garlic, fresh mushrooms, fresh herbs, 1 tbl grated parmesan, 5 oz chianti, fresh spinach & mixed greens, 3 grape tomatoes 7:30 pm Sm piece rhubarb coffee cake Exercise: 2:50-4:20 pm Walk w/Dad along the river

Fri 13 Jun

Still so far, so good on the pager. Every quiet day is a gift. Looking forward (?) to cleaning off the table this weekend and getting some household things accomplished. Promised a client I'd go to lunch with him today because he was feeling so down. Have to make sure that doesn't slip into a precedent. Just had my first page 10 min before leaving the office, and was able to resolve it in that remaining 10 min, except for a few minutes to write up the paperwork at home. Resisted the urge to end my report with "DUH!!!" Dad and i topped off the week with a meal at Red Mill. I had their homemade crab cakes w/red pepper sauce, subbed in their delicious steamed broccoli for rice, and a cup of very nice homemade clam chowder that was well-seasoned and not too thick. Dad had their seafood sampler w/sauteed haddock, 2 scallops and 2 shrimp. A glass of white Menage e Trois and a stop afterward at King Kone, followed by a nice walk, and the evening is complete. Food: 6:40 am 1/2 grapefruit, 101 g raspberries, Happy Farms Light spreadable cheese wedge, coffee 8:15 am Cheese omelette, 2 slices wheat toast w/1 pkg orange marmalade, wedge cantaloupe, wedge honeydew, coffee 11:30 am 3 pecan crepes (plain) 2:45 pm Butterfinger miniature 4:30 pm 1 Fiesta egg 5:25 pm 5 oz white wine, 1.5 crab cakes w/red pepper sauce, cup clam chowder, 2 small slices vegetable bread (butter on one), large clump steamed broccoli 6:15 pm 1/2 and 1/2 Zanzibar chocolate and Huckleberry Finn ice cream (small cup) Exercise: 4:50-5:25 am Jessica Smith Cardio Bootcamp YouTube 5:25-5:45 am Jane Fonda Workout with Weights video 6:35-7:05 pm Walk with Dad

First two nights of on-call have been blessedly quiet. Always a good thing. Mary Hofer and I walked to Tokyo Steak House for sushi after an early lesson, her last of the evening, yesterday. Tues 10 Jun

We did a partial slow hike at Rib last night since I'm going on call for a week now and we can't go back for awhile. We both have some blisters from Walk Wisconsin that made us limp a bit, but I think it's good to work the muscles a bit in recovery, even if at a slow pace. I'm still managing the morning exercise, but I'm not really able to move with as much zest as usual. Food: 7:00 am Steel cut oats w/flaxseed meal, protein powder, 1/2 c frozen blueberries, soy milk, 1/2 c grapefruit, 101 g raspberries, coffee 11:45 am Chocolate soy shake, slice Dutch Country 100% whole wheat bread, 1 tbl PB, med banana, 2 oz soy milk,1 tsp sugar 12:30 pm 6 g Green & Black mint dark chocolate 2:45 pm Milky Way Fun Size bar 6:45 pm Macadamia-crusted tilapia filet, 2/3 c mashed sweet potato w/butter, 1.75 c Pictsweet broccoli/cauiflower/carrots, 8 oz skim milk Exercise: 4:50-5:45 am Cardio Dance DVD 5:45-6:15 pm Walk with Dad

Ah, the morning after Walk Wisconsin. When your body feels thoroughly abused down to the tips of the toes. I'm predicting three toenails will go this year. I foolishly forgot to put on my toe protectors which might have saved two of them, but this year the big toe on the right foot looks distinctly bruised which is new. Exercise this morning was pure will power. Bob must really be hurting today. He couldn't even manage walking to St. Joe's; had to turn back as soon as we crossed Center St. Didn't really feel like supper after finishing the spinach fettucine leftovers for lunch, so we just went to King Kone for ice cream. Food: 8:35 am 1 c Trader Joe's multigrain flaxseed cereal, 1/2 c light original soy milk, 1 c fruit salad, 100 g raspberries, coffee 12:30 pm 1 c spinach fettucine w/1 oz strip chicken, about 10-12 cloves garlic, and pieces of bacon 1:00 pm 31 g Calimyrna figs 2:30 pm 1/4 chocolate-drizzled caramel corn 5:15 pm Sm dish berry chocolate ice cream Exercise: 6:50-7:40 am Ballet DVD 7:40-8:25 am Jessica Smith Disco Walk YouTube 2:45-3:15 pm Walk to and around St. Joe's picnic

Walk Wisconsin day! At least is has dawned sunny and lovely; let's hope it stays that way for much of the walk. We go at 9:00 for announcements; the buses should be there around 9:15. We aren't the fastest walkers, but knowing the weather may deteriorate as the afternoon comes on may help us pick up our pace a bit. Someone brought donuts to the potluck last night, presumably because yesterday was National Donut Day. There were several left at the end, so we each brought one home for breakfast. Dad's idea, for the record. Food: 6:45 am Chocolate-frosted raised donut, 1/2 grapefruit, 103 g raspberries, coffee

Tues 3 Jun

We had a very nice anniversary dinner at Tokyo Steak House last night. We ordered the Love Boat of sushi/sashimi and they brought us a fried ice cream dessert. Now it's time to settle down to eating at home for awhile. I guess we have the annual ACT potluck on Friday evening so I'll have to shoot for making something healthy. The ACT group is known for mayo and fried things. Speaking of fried things, I'm finishing the baked treat from the weekend with a large round fried dough doughnut this morning. There is a disturbing amount of sweet things on my food list today. So far it looks partly cloudy out. Hoping the rain holds off so we can get a solid hike in today. We found a nice section of trail off the nearby trailhead. We did a shorter piece of it yesterday and would like to take it quite a bit further today if weather permits.

Happy Anniversary to Dad and me, and to our parents, both living and deceased. 30 years for Dad and I today. It's been a good ride, and hopefully we have many more years to share. I gave myself a day off from weighing in today because it's so humid, I can feel myself swollen and bloated. I know that makes the number on the scale go sky high with little meaning, so I opted not to even look at it. Food: 7:00 am Lemon filled croissant w/powdered sugar, 1/2 grapefruit, 99 g blackberries, coffee 11:00 am Peach soy shake, 1/2 8" flatbread pizza w/sausage, mushroom, caramelized onion, white cheese 1:15 pm Milky Way Midnight mini 4:45 pm 1/3 large molasses cookie Exercise: 4:50-6:00 am Jsne Fonda Complete Workout video 5:10-5:55 pm Walk around University
