Thurs 31 Dec
Sayonara, 2020! People will be extremely happy to see the back end of this year, hoping beyond hope that next year shows improvements. I thank the Lord that our family has made it through this year with our health intact, safe and doing okay. We have all (except Taylor) been able to continue our regular source of income so we haven't gone hungry or had to worry about evictions or power shutoffs. Michael and Taylor got married this year. Things haven't been so bad for us. But my heart aches for much of the rest of the world who have had to deal with losses of loved ones to Co-Vid, disability from illness, loss of income, etc. And for the violence and racism that have hurt so many. Lord, please send healing in 2021 and show us the way to make the world a better place. (And please let Trump leave office peaceably.)

Wed 30 Dec
Had a lovely holiday dinner with Michael and Taylor yesterday evening. The duck they slow-cooked was absolutely scrumptious. The goose I cooked was a little dry and quite a bit chewier, but it was a big bird, at the top end of what Julia Child said would begin to be tough. Really enjoyed the food, the camaraderie, and the gifts were a hit.
Food:
7:50 am Caramel pecan roll, 101 g blackberries, coffee

Had a dream, half-awake, this morning that I was having a heart attack and had to go to the hospital. It was a bit disconcerting.
Skipped the annoyting Yogalates instructor at the gym and did a Pilates mat at home instead. Much more satisfying and safer, too.
Food:

11:40 am Mac n cheese
Exercise:
8:50-9:35 am Pilates mat

Chilly with a thin layer of snow outside, enough that I think Bob is going at it with the snowblower. I should try to get the kids' gifts organized and wrapped today and make a final decision on what to put aside for Taylor's birthday next week Wednesday.

Here we are, post-holiday but actually also pre-holiday since we're celebrating with Michael and Taylor on Tuesday. Kind of a nice mix of relaxation with a hint of anticipation. I looked at NYE specials in Madison, and they are a mix of take-out and dine-in in small groups. Once place lets you rent "snow globes" for parties of 4-6 people. It's good that people are being creative in managing things as well as possible, but I'm sure there are too many places where people will choose to gather in large groups anyway.
Waiting for the Hot Chocolate cinnamon rolls to finish baking.
8:10 am 101 g blackberries, coffee, hot chocolate cinnamon roll (to come)
10:30 am Chocolate covered dunker
12:15 pm 3 eggnog pancakes w/butter & syrup, 2 slices bacon, 3/4 c eggnog
26 December 2020
Sat 26 Dec
Happy Boxing Day! No Farmer's Market today so no real out-of-house commitments. Weather is somewhat milder, so I suspect a hike is in the offing. I'm also doing catchup laundry and may do towels and possibly even merino today.
Food:
8:25 am Caramel pecan roll, 101 g blackberries, coffee
10:30 am Chocolate coated dunker
12:15 pm Whole wheat English muffin w/butter, butternut squash bisque, 2 slices Swiss cheese

Merry Christmas 2020!
A quiet Christmas day ahead for us with Laura in Madison and Michael and Taylor in Ironwood. I still need to wrap our presents! I'll make a rack of lamb roast for dinner this evening, maybe roast a butternut squash to go with it and bake some sweet potatoes? Haven't thought that far ahead!

Christmas Eve 2020
The cold weather did indeed move in and Bob is fretting over the temperatures for our walk with Hartmans. We haven't yet been in contact this morning, so I'm not sure of the plans.
Had a really nice visit from Michael and Taylor yesterday evening, sharing wine and giving them their Christmas stockings and kitty gift, saving the main gifts for our dinner get-together on Tuesday evening. They sent a picture of Mewis in the cat house, so he seems to like it. They seemed to like all of their stocking stuffers, including Michael's papaya!
Food:
8:05 am Pear coffee cake, 101 g blackberries, coffee

Wed 23 Dec
Today I pick up our Christmas goose and get my hair done. Will try to get the butterhorn dough prepared as well, and maybe put up the creche. Busy day.

Completely cloudy sky last night obscured any possible view of the "Star of Bethlehem" convergence of planets that hasn't been seen since 1225. Hopefully there will be Internet pictures from elsewhere on the globe where the skies were clear.

Soltice comes but twice a year. After today, the days again start to lengthen. Always a pleasant thought. This last week before Christmas generally just disappears.

Had a really nice trip to Madison yesterday. Visited with Laura (and briefly with Kat), saw Annie, spent lots of money at Costco, good Trader Joe's run with yummy sandwiches to eat in the car for supper, safe travels on decent roads.
Packers won even though I didn't watch.
Food:

Didn't sleep very well last night, just rested at the surface of sleep. Did finish baking the cookies yesterday evening so we'll have some to give to Laura today, and to share with Michael/Taylor and Leone/Mick and Hartmans.

If I were still working, I'd be getting very excited for a four-day weekend to come. The seasonal attractions are wonderful, but the time off this time of year for tired workers is also important. I feel so fortunate to be able to be retired and not have to get so stressed out often. I found out yesterday that Bootstrap is closed not only on Christmas Eve, but also the afternoon of New Year's Eve, so I don't return til next year.

Thurs 17 Dec
Got the stocking stuffers in one go at Aldi yesterday evening, enough to fill everyone's brim-full except mine. I should have no problem topping mine off at TJs. Had a little mix-up with Farmshed; apparently I was sufficiently confused by their interface that I ordered the delivery and not the soup, though I do remember submitting the soup order. We were able to get it sorted out and Trevor brought it on his delivery bike, so Farmshed chili is waiting for dinner tonight.
No Kathy walk this morning, so I'm going to try to motivate to get the cookie dough made.

Chilly morning, required turning on the house heat. Fireplace isn't enough and takes too long to warm the house when it's under 20° outside. Michael and Taylor stopped over with coffee cake as a thank you for Bob getting the furnace fixed and for the down comforter we gave them. Sounds like they'd prefer to do Christmas dinner on another day and to cook food separately, share portions, and eat at home with FaceTime. Whatever.
Food:
7:55 am Lemon blueberry coffee cake, 101 g blackberries, coffee
12:15 pm Slice Loven Fresh whole wheat, butter, slice Bourbon ham, slice baby Swiss, small English cucumber, Bosc pear

Chilly morning. Packers won, though once again they didn't let the viewer relax til the final seconds of the final drive. Looked like they were going to give away their comfortable lead on numerous penalties and a long kick return, but they held on by their fingernails.
Plans still in place to visit Laura on Saturday, so I'm going to try to fill a stocking for her this week. Let Michael know that we'll willingly courier anything they might want to send.
Food:
7:55 am Morning bun, 101 g blackberries, coffee

Starting to get chillier again now, but since it's almost mid-December, we really have nothing to complain about. Bob had to get up this morning and go get Taylor's furnace going. They had a blown fuse and she is home this weekend doing a girls' weekend with Grace. Reggie had bought some fuses so they had what was needed to fix the problem.

Hoping very much that David will be at the Market today with pre-Christmas goodies for us. Will be so nice to taste his artistry again.
Oh, well. Not this week (again). Heard he was delayed a week, so maybe next week. He'll probably trot out his traditional specialty goodies so we'll have to wait even longer for morning pastries. The fish lady whose daughter makes delicious morning buns had a big supply and insisted on giving us a discount for bulk purchase. We'll have good bakery this week anyway, if a little repetitive.

Looking forward to walking with Kathy this morning, and hoping to settle whether they will come for brunch on Christmas Eve this year, just the two of them. It's only two weeks away so I need to start planning. I also plan to broach the subject of eliminating the gift exchange altogether, except maybe a few Christmas cookies that would already be made. A little anxious as to the overall response.

Not nearly so dark today. Yesterday must have just been very overcast to be so dark in the morning. Today I can pick up a quart of Cheese Louise tomato basil soup at Farmshed! That will be a long-missed treat. Maybe I'll make grilled cheese sandwiches to accompany it for dinner tonight.

Another cloudy day emphasizes the lack of light in this part of December. I'm not used to such darkness in the morning for my shower; usually there's a hint of sunrise in the east. Only a couple more weeks til solstice, and then it will start improving again. Hope Laura recovers enough in the next couple of weeks to give me some ideas of what to give her for Christmas. I have a few things put aside for Michael and Taylor, but nothing as yet for her. Also need to quiz M/T about a major gift idea.

Getting into the darkest days of the year, but then they will turn around soon. For now, we just get through December. Poor Laura sounded truly exhausted yesterday on the phone, but it didn't help that I woke her from a nap. I pray that she makes it through this end-of-semester crunch and gets some good rest before next semester starts afresh.

Happy St. Nicholas Day! I no longer put gifts in anyone's shoes or even mail things to the kids anymore, but I still have fond memories. We were able to get a whole week's worth of morning buns from the fish lady this week, and her daughter makes them far less sweet than Clasen's so I really prefer them. You can taste the butter in the dough.

Weekend already! They certainly fly by quickly. Gotta get a few more decorations down from the attic that I missed the first time, and try to find the remote tree switch for Taylor. Want to get to the Farmer's Market fairly early today. Otherwise no weekend plans at this point.
Spent lots of money on food this morning: a week's worth of morning buns and fish from the fish lady, parsnips and yellow carrots, a red curry squash, eggs, and frozen tamales all at the Farmer's Market, then English muffins, a big pork roast for pulled pork and buns, frozen lobster bisque, two nice pieces of prime rib for tonight, Orville Redenbacher's for Bob at Metro Market. Good food to come!
Food:
8:00 am Brioche chocolate chip roll, 101 g blackberries, coffee

Pulled a red Moscato for tonight's wine, so need to think on something to mix it with to make it less cloying. This cherry coffee cake I bought from the people who run the farm stand by Family Video has been quite good. Sort of like a homemade version of the grocery store bar coffee cakes, a little more substantial. Not bad.

Walking with Kathy this morning; seems like it's been a long time with missing Thanksgiving and possibly also the week before. Don't think it's quite as cold this morning as I had expected either which is a pleasant surprise. Also back to Bootstrap this afternoon after a week off for Thanksgiving.

Putting up the basic tree was not pleasant in that the lights did not all light and couldn't be fixed by Bob. New lit trees are very expensive and Bob clearly wasn't in favor of a real tree, so I was somewhat depressed by the situation. Didn't bother to get down the decorations. Went for a Schmeeckle walk, listened to O Ole Night radio show, watched the Bake-Off final (Peter won!), and finished my Bess book. Try again today.

Happy Thanksgiving! So strange not to have a to-do list to cook for the meal today. Picking up food from Rockman's is sort of weird, but it's likely just the two of us, though we'll share with Michael and Taylor as he intends to share some of their home-cooked feast with us. Hopefully we'll video chat or at least phone chat with Laura as well today. Michael and Taylor have been invited for a visit if they feel comfortable, but I'll abide by their decision.

Made the pumpkin pasta sauce recipe I found on SparkPeople for dinner yesterday. It was good. Different. I think I'll put the lamb roast into the Crock Pot tonight. Saw Anna putting her garbage cans down yesterday so we checked to verify the holiday schedule, and now we have our garbage out for pickup as well.

Had a really nice visit with Laura yesterday, even though she sat on a blanket on her lawn and we sat in the car with the doors open. We all ate sushi and caught up, and then we went inside and met her brand new black kitty! She hasn't even settled on a name yet, though she's leaning toward LaBrea (like the tarpits). I prayed that the Lord would help heal her soul from the broken relationship amid the stress of school, and he sent the kitty to love her. Thank you, Lord!

Sure was nice to have one more warm day yesterday. Even though I had Bootstrap in the afternoon, I appreciated being able to take orders out and be comfortable. It was quite the busy day.
We decided to order Scott Rockman's high-end Thanksgiving dinner since Michael and Taylor have decided it is safer not to get together. Was nice to chat with Scott when I ordered yesterday.

The warm day has arrived as promised. Already low to mid-forties when I got up. Kathy has a conflict and can't walk today, but I'm going to go out on my own to take advantage of the warmer weather. Feel bad that I need the car for Bootstrap this afternoon, but Bob has asked to drop me off and pick me up. I'll text him about 15 min before pick-up time and hopefully it will work out okay.
Good night's sleep; woke up once to pee and pretty much stayed asleep the rest of the time. I like it.

Christianah called yesterday! And after I had just been talking about her to Bob in the morning, wishing I could tell her that Michael got married! So nice to chat and catch up on our families. Picked up food from Michele's last night when I saw an ad on Facebook around 3:30 pm for a 4-pack of shredded beef sandwiches w/mac n cheese, coleslaw, and cookies for $20. In the earlier days of my PCHHS employment, today would have been the Veteran's Day holiday. My mom and I often took the day to go shopping to the Appleton mall to get a headstart on Christmas and just have a fun day out. We didn't get the day after Thanksgiving off then, and I usually worked since my coworkers had out-of-town families to visit, but it was a quiet day to catch up on filing and commiserate with the few others who also were covering their sections.

Had a great evening with Michael and Taylor yesterday to celelbrate their wedding. Killed the bottle of Veuve Cliquot, a bottle of Meoimi pinot noir and opened a bottle of zin. Didn't sleep too well after steak and scallops, chocolate cake, and too much alcohol but it was a lovely evening.

Was bummed out yesterday when Michael asked to postpone the wedding dinner to tonight because he was tired and sore from their Sheboygan visit and his time on the rifle range with "the guys". I won't allow myself to get too excited about tonight until I know for sure that they are coming.
Temperatures were a little above 60 when I got up this morning! Unfortunately, this is likely the tail end of the lovely weather streak, but we have surely been gifted with beauty, especially last week when stress was running so high about the election.

The popular vote count continues to rise in Biden's favor and it is hopefully looking good that he will get enough electoral votes from at least one, if not more, of the as-yet-uncalled states to win the election. Still trying hard not to get too hopeful to avoid bitter disappointment if Trump finds a way to undermine the election.
Another gorgeous day, with temps at 55 already when I got up at 7 am. Going to Madison to get new tires on the car, enjoy another sushi lunch with Laura, and get our erranding done (including finally returning that bulky shower caddy that doesn't fit my tub).
Food:
8:00 am 3/4 c lowfat plain Greek yogurt, 1/3 c pumpkin granola, 101 g blackberries, coffee

I'll be relieved when merely writing the date no longer causes stress, even if it's just because the results are done and nothing more can change. Tomorrow is likely to be fairly high stress.
Had a nice chat with Laura yesterday. She's been stressed with work obligations, but is cracking along with her lifting program which gives her joy. Michael called Bob yesterday for assistance in picking up and taking home a small chest freezer, just as I had suggested we get them for Christmas. We may end up just calling it part of their wedding gift now as we chose to pay for it as well.

I find myself getting progressively more nervous as election day approaches rapidly. I know there's nothing further I can do, but I'm scared to hear the results. What will be, will be.

Halloween!
First Halloween with no Trick or Treat in my memory. Alas, Co-Vid. At least there's no candy in the house to tempt us. Heard yesterday that the St Pt school district will go to all e-learning, no classroom between Thanksgiving break and the New Year. They are apparently unable to have enough staff to work the current model and need time to work on it.

Fri 30 Oct
Tomorrow is Halloween with a full blue moon, forecast for 50° and sunny, but no Trick or Treat. We shall have to go for a hike, and maybe howl at the moon if we can stay up that late. I'll wear my cat mask to celelbrate the holiday.

So strange to think of Halloween coming this weekend with no Trick or Treat. Co-Vid has truly changed the world we live in, with no foreseeable end in sight. Sigh.
Had to split my Jane Fonda Complete Workout into two sessions as I was getting winded. Must be getting old.

Hopefully folks will wear masks in Yogalates today. I suggested to Robin yesterday that maybe they could rig up video in one of the reservable private rooms so people could participate in class without concern for masks and without endangering others. She said she's mention it as it had been considered before by management anyway.

Last week of October, and our son really did get married! They stopped by on their way up north for a honeymoon week in Ironwood so we got to give them illicit hugs, somewhat safer since they had just tested negative for Co-Vid. Hopefully we aren't infected and contagious to give anything to them! I announced it on Facebook and texted Mick, so our family and friends know, and many congratulations have been coming in.
Sarah Wilke was in my Pilates class today! So nice to catch up. Hope to see her again in class in the future.

Nice trip to Madison yesterday, and were able to share a nice sushi lunch with Laura at the picnic table across the street. She then headed out to go hiking with friends and we finished our shopping at Trader Joe's, having done Costco and the bakery before lunch. Now we have a week's worth of breakfast treats, mostly morning buns (that were BOGO) along with other goodies.

Friday again already. Probably going to drive down to Madison tomorrow, but not sure if Laura will be available to see us or not. May have to settle for a Costco/TJs trip. Hopefully yesterday's rain is done and gone.
Decided to leave before yoga class today as there was again a woman without a mask, one of the two who had been in Yogalates on Tuesday. Explained my concerns to Robin and to the front desk.

A grey and probably precipitous day outside. Kathy let me know early in the week that she couldn't walk today, so I'll stay in this morning and only go out for Bootstrap this afternoon. Maybe driving down to Madison on Saturday. Laura may have an opportunity to go hiking, so if we see her at all, it would have to be before or after her hiking.

Hoping that when I go to the gym this morning that the "trend" of a few people not wearing masks does not continue. If it does, I will have to stop going to classes. The gym is already a dangerous enough place without a level of mask noncompliance.

This week is more cold, grey, inside days. Not likely to match my step totals from last week when I got out for several long walks, especially evening walks at Schmeeckle. Not very inviting to go out in the cold and possible precip. Lapping the living room is more like it.
I was not at all happy in Yogalates as there were two participants who were not wearing masks and nothing was said to them. It is dangerous enough to be exercising indoors at gyms without people who choose not to wear masks. I said something to Alexis immediately after class and she promised to say something (presumably to the offenders), but if this becomes a trend, I will have to stop going to the gym again. I am not willing to engage in risky behavior with CO-VID so rampant.

Yummy Trig's caramel pecan rolls for breakfast this week. Almost an acceptable substitute for David's good pastries. Temperatures are heading chillier now as we get into the meat of October, but I guess we can't have a mild fall forever. Packers tanked yesterday after a good start; Aaron had two interceptions and just kind of fizzled. Had a surprise opportunity to watch a video oboe/clarinet concert with Anna Petersen and another chamber musician thanks to Joan's Facebook notification.

Very nice hike on the Ice Age Trail yesterday in spite of snow on the ground. If we hadn't had difficulty finding the trailhead so that the falling snow/rain had stopped when we got there, I don't think I would have convinced Bob to do the hike, but as it was, it was just a bit chilly at first. Poles helped with any slight slipperiness on inclines and it was a great hike. The volunteer at the checkpoint/turnaround was Gail Piotrowski, someone we hadn't seen for many years. She was very enthusiastic about the trail and invited us to join the volunteer group when our schedules allow.

I chose not to go to class at the gym yesterday because it was pouring rain and high winds, but the app said it was too late to cancel. I called the gym to let them know I wasn't coming, but now I seem to be closed out from booking future classes. Hopefully that's only temporary but I'll ask about it at the desk when I go in today.
Found out that it was not an issue with the app "punishing" me for missing class yesterday, but rather an ongoing problem the app is having with playing nicely with iPhones. I have been able to circumvent it in the past, but my fixes were not working today. After Yogalates, I had to again approach the front desk because not all the classes, including the one I wanted, were displaying on my app for the next available date. They were able to get me registered at the front desk.

Home again (with the typical rise in the scale from a brief vacation), but we had an excellent weekend. We were able to do everything I had hoped for, eat good Wild Tomato pizza and have our dinner at CHOP, hike some beautiful trails in Cave Point/Whitefish Dunes State Park and one of the Land Trust sites (Lautenbach Hills). Got another peck of Honey Crisps and some delicious local pears. Beautiful room at RunAway Lodge @ Valmy with our own full kitchen, balcony overlooking nothing but trees, and a comfortable king bed. Life is good!

Supposed to be the warmest day today, possibly up to 77°. Should be able to leave for Door Co after lunch. We'll have to see what Bob is able to eat once we're there. I'll have to discuss with him what to bring from home.

Weather continues to be gorgeous and Bob is feeling better today, so it looks as though we may not have to cancel the Door Co weekend after all. We have a full kitchen in the room so we don't have to eat out if he doesn't feel like it. I can cancel the reservation at CHOP if necessary and we can pick up things that suit us both. It remains to be seen. It should still be beautiful for hiking at some of the lesser-used trails.

Bob isn't feeling well now, seems somewhat similar to what I had a few weeks ago. So far no fever or breathing effects, so not likely CO-VID at this point, just some stomach discomfort, dizziness on occasion, loss of appetite. Dizziness hit during his shower, so he's laying on the couch now.
Forgot to put on my Fitbit before going to the gym, so I need to play catch-up. Oh, well.

Decided to change from Yoga Flow to Yogilates, even though I prefer the time slot of the former. I'm still a Pilates gal at heart, so I prefer more emphasis on that discipline. Neither class is a formal Les Mills format, so she can do whatever she pleases as an instructor. I'm not guaranteed that Yogalates will be that much more Pilates-focused, but I'll go with it. It's also a less well-attended class so less people is better.

Nice trip to Madison yesterday. Were able to have lunch with Laura at the picnic table. Leone called while we were there to beg off from a birthday celebration, but was able to speak to Laura a little. She is going to give Laura her very lightly used sewing machine, and Laura is delighted since she was thinking of getting one. Had rather too successful shopping trips at Trader Joe's and Costco.

October already! 2020 may be bereft of many of its landmark events, but the time moves along just as surely. Pretty scary with winter and moving indoors in the immediate future and CO-VID spiking dramatically in Wisconsin. They should probably shut everything down again, but I'm pretty sure they won't.
Today will be a most busy day, walking with Kathy, directly to a hair appointment, home with barely enough time for lunch before an afternoon at Bootstrap. I pray Bootstrap isn't too busy so Kathy decides to walk. It will only get worse if she isn't on shift to help.

Had a weird dystopian dream about people being "re-engineered" to not require food or water (or going to the bathroom), just taking a small daily pill that contained all the needed nutrients to run the body without waste. It had been developed to eliminate hunger and was distributed first to all the underfed populations, but then was accepted by everyone. No more obesity, considerably less disease. No restaurants, grocery stores, farmers, cooks. Weird.

Heading into a chilly week as October rolls around soon. Didn't get into my Pilates class this morning, but will try to get into next week's as the new app states that signup starts at 10 am today. Had a wonderful week in Grand Marais. Despite some worrying, our cabin reservation was waiting for us (even without recent confirmation). The cabin was clean and cozy and very adequate to our needs. It was chilly on Thursday, so we had a fire in the Franklin fireplace that made the interior almost too toasty. We had a large picture window to the yard behind our cabin that was not really open to any other people except through back or side windows. We were treated to a young black bear that wandered in from the woods and climbed a crabapple tree behind cabin 5 to get his snacks. He came back so often (three times) that I named him Buddy. We also had visits from several grouse, though not at the same time as Buddy.
The color was absolutely beautiful, at peak, and second only to the amazing first year (but not far behind)! We had beautiful sunshine on Monday, Tuesday, and part of Wednesday to really bring out the color, and even in the cloudiness the rest of the time, the brilliant colors shone through. Somewhat unusually, the yellows of the birches were also close to peak along with the brilliant maples. We did a long hike on Moose Mountain/Mystery Mountain along a newly-improved mountain bike trail on Tuesday, Lake Agnes on Wednesday, Carlton Peak on Thursday, and Kadunce River on Friday. Good hiking, some amazing views, and wonderful mild weather. It was actually a bit warm on Tuesday and Wednesday.
We enjoyed two meals and last-day takeaway from the Coho Cafe (lox and bagel sandwiches and good pizza), delicious fish and chips from the fish market, adequate burgers from My Sister's Place takeaway. We had one evening of the leek and potato soup I had brought from home. It was nice to have a comfortable place to eat in the cabin so we didn't have to sit outside if it was too cool toward the end of the week. We did eat at the Gunflint cafe-on-the-street on Monday night.

The day is here! We are actually getting ready to go, and I hope that they are waiting for us in Grand Marais. I'm a little unsettled for not having received any confirmation email, but I seem to remember that Nelson's isn't real internet-savvy. I pray it's not a bad sign.

Just saw a picture of the brilliant foliage from the really good year we first went up to the North Shore. Hoping for even a shadow of that glory this year.
Delighted that my scale dipped back down again below 150 today. I was a little afraid that once it crested, it would keep rising now that I'm eating meals again.
Packers won! Good game!

Remembering five years ago right after my retirement party, we went up for a week at the North Shore and stayed in a cabin at the Gunflint. That's where we fell in love with the gas fireplace. Got lots of good pastries and a loaf of bread from David to take up north. Good cinnamon rolls w/fruit pieces for this morning.
Scale is creeping back over 150 again, so need to be careful. We had Culver's sundaes last night, which may have been a factor.

Feel like I'm progressively improving, but slowly. Scale has remained below 150 for three days running now. Wish it could stay there even when I am able to eat more normally. Did breakfast and a fairly substantial lunch of french toast and sliced banana in milk yesterday, but wasn't hungry for dinner. Managed a glass of chocolate milk and about 2/3 of the leftover slice of foccacia.

Somewhat nervous to say it, but feeling a bit better this morning. Slept well, stomach feeling pretty good. If I get another good poop this morning, should be feeling pretty normal. Weight just now crept under 150, but hope that doesn't mean I'm losing muscle mass from not doing Pump. Will do some strength training here at home today to keep up.

Only ate very minimally yesterday (102 g blackberries, 1/2 c cottage cheese, and a bowl of cereal all day), but I feel much better today for it. I hope to be able to eat breakfast today after we get some fresh pastries at the Farmer's Market. It's raining, so we'll likely drive to the market. We'll probably have to drive to Bukolt also for the pre-show for Walk for Hope, though I had really hoped to walk there and back as our "virtual walk". We will try walking to Bukolt even with raincoats and umbrellas.
I'm chancing a whole lunch today. Let's hope it takes.

My stomach did not like having to digest a normal supper last night. I woke up in the middle of the night to the awareness of the digestive processes taking place less than comfortably. I did manage to have a BM while getting ready this morning which has improved my well-being, but I'm still far from normal. Glad I canceled my gym classes for today; no doubt I wouldn't have been going. Not sure how much I'll eat today.

Walking with Kathy this morning, on time and hopefully not as fast as last week. Also hoping my stomach is sufficiently recovered to enjoy the birthday dinner this evening with Michael & Taylor that they will cook here. Not sure if I'm supposed to bake the cake, so I will try to do one if I can.

Taking yet another day off from the gym to more fully recuperate. I felt good in the morning yesterday and, although I needed a noon nap, okay in the afternoon. My stomach was fine, but come supper time, I just didn't feel like eating. Bob and I shared one of the chocolate raspberry tarts from Michael & Taylor, and that was enough for me. Hoping today brings me closer to normalcy.

Stomach continues to be less than comfortable, with upper GI gas bothering me in the night particularly. I hope it goes away soon. It was encouraging yesterday that Michael said some stomach issues seem to be going around, though it seems that with masks and other precautions, things shouldn't really be "going around" much anymore. I'm still tired physically too, though I didn't feel there was anything to be gained by sleeping in much this morning.

Today would have been MN State Fair day in a normal world. First miss in my memory. It will be nice to have a little visit from Kurt & Barb today to get a little piece of the tradition. I feel like I should have found turkey legs for the grill or maybe make chocolate chip cookies and put them in the Sweet Martha bucket today. Sigh.

David had sent me a Facebook message saying that my danish were on him today, but Emma was working and didn't appear to know anything about it. I wasn't comfortable bringing it up, so we just paid normally. He also had quiches and foccacia, both of which we bought. He did his sticky caramel rolls again which are really amazing, but no eclairs.

Happy Birthday to me! I got a fun card from Bob and birthday texts from Michael and Taylor already, though M&T aren't comfortable joining us at Father Fat's to eat in a public place. But I got a surprise lunch date at Hilltop with Bill & Paddy today. And M&T offered to cook a dinner for us next week sometime. Hopefully that won't fade into nothingness like Michael's planned birthday dinner did.

Had fun with the first-of-the-month new critters on Animal Crossing yesterday. I always seem to play longer near the beginning of the month while I discover the new things. Robin taught the Yogilates class yesterday so it was nice since I had not been able to get into her Pilates class on Monday. Today looks to be sunny and comfortably cool.

I'm officially on Medicare as of today! Hopefully that will allow me better access to medical care without worry of huge bills. Certainly the bills for the insurance itself, including the supplement are about 1/3 of my previous insurance costs, and there shouldn't be huge deductibles to pay if I really need to see a doctor.

Grey day, a little rain in the night. The Pilates class is full, but I'll try to get in anyway. She said only one class has ever been so full she had to turn someone away. Hoping for luck.

Had a very nice trip to Madison yesterday even though Laura was too busy with school prep to spend any time with us. We did lunch at La Brioche, shopped TJs, Costco, and Woodmans, did a short 1-mile nature hike at Governor Nelson State Park, and topped off with good grilled cheese sandwiches and beer at Lone Girl Brewery in Waunakee. We had a very perky waiter named Alan who made dinner fun. Lovely cool sleeping weather dipping into the low 50s. I'm even wearing long sleeves and long leggings today!

Having a very much "I don' wanna!" day with regards to the gym. Weather is cooperating by bringing in a thunderstorm, so I'll probably give in. Matter of fact, I think I'll take the bull by the horns and cancel my classes on the app for today. There! I canceled Body Pump but still thinking about Yoga at 10:15. Giving myself a chance to change my mind for a little while yet.
Didn't help a gray, rainy day that my soy milk has gone lumpy. Couldn't face takig a bite of that disgusting mess, so I was wasteful and threw it out and made another bowl with soy milk from a new container. I dislike wasting food, but I just couldn't make myself eat that curdled mess.

Made it through the day yesterday without turning on the A/C. Can feel the humidity this morning, but the temperature isn't bad. Gotta keep remembering that we'll miss the warmth when it's winter cold. I always think toward the end of winter how nice it will be to be able to walk outside in the same clothes I'm wearing without jackets, hats, mittens, etc. Gotta enjoy that now.
Got through Body Pump in the hot sun by promising myself I didn't have to stay for Yoga today. It was a new release and a bit tough.

Bootstrap was a mess yesterday afternoon with a very angry Thursday worker, Patti, who lambasted me for the changes as if everything was all my fault. I was quite upset for a while but Bob and I took a nice back of Schmeeckle walk after he got home and then got spring rolls and steamed buns and a honeydew bubble tea and all was right with the world.

Had a really lovely trip to Madison yesterday, getting in our Costco/Woodman's errands first, lunching with Laura at the picnic table across the street in the school property, quiet afternoon time to do Duo while Bob helped Laura replace her basement handrail and then napped, found Basil Mint cider at East Side Woodman's, shared cider and sushi with Laura and Kat at the picnic table for dinner, then a quiet drive home.

Got a fresh hair cut/color, had an afternoon walk with Kathy yesterday, Bob was satisfied with leftovers for dinner. Nice afternoon. Today appears to be nice weather again so should be able to hang out laundry after gym.
Doing Body Pump outdoors in the sunshine drains me easily twice as much as it usually does indoors. I managed to recover enough to do Yoga, but I'm wiped.

I saw one meteor in the Perseid shower last night, about 11:45 pm, when I got up to use the bathroom. It looked just like the shooting stars on Animal Crossing but I didn't have to press A. It wasn't a comfortable place to sit and watch for more and I wanted to get back to bed, but I should have found a better viewing place for a while because I really didn't sleep very well the rest of the night.
Decadent carrot cake muffins for breakfast today. And yesterday we got an unexpected treat of a $12 dinner special at Michele's for take-out. I had grilled pork chops and Bob had broasted chicken and we both have leftovers.
Not sure whether Kathy and I will walk this morning. She injured her back yesterday in Sheboygan and will touch base this morning.

Ten degrees cooler this morning than the same time yesterday, and less humidity to boot! Talked to Melissa DeBot yesterday and determined that, starting next week, I will be switching my Bootstrap afternoon to Thursday, continuing to work with Kathy. We will still do Wed this week, which is good because I get my hair cut on Thursday this week. I should be able to take the Wed yoga class starting next week since I don't have anything in the afternoon now to be rushed. It will be a little weird to do Bootstrap on a different day after five years of Wed afternoon.

Wow, it's warm this morning. You can feel the humidity even with the A/C on. The outside temperature was 73 when I got up at the normal time, higher than it's been all summer by a few degrees. We were supposed to get storms in the night, but they apparently passed by us. It's possible we have another hot streak coming this week.

Kathy said she is dealing with exhaustion and ear pain this week, so no walk til next week with my friend. Will try to motivate to get out on my own this morning after sufficient time to relax. We worked our butts off at Bootstrap yesterday afternoon, so a little less pressure to move is welcome. Looking forward to seeing Heather for dinner this evening on the patio at PJs. Hope it works out.

One more month to be a pre-senior citizen. Much as I've been looking forward to Medicare, it seems somewhat inconceivable that I'll be 65. That was always the threshhold to "old" when I was growing up. I remember making a sign for my mom's 65th saying something like "Welcome to being a senior citizen!" Not sure how I'll feel about that in a month when it's me.

I'll be on Medicare in less than a month now. Card is already in my wallet. Gotta finish the paperwork and decision-making for the Supplement plan and apply at the beginning of September for SeniorCare. Received notice that we will get about $550/month toward Bob's health care premium at least til December, so the Security bill should plummet.
Had a great spontaneous weekend in Door County. Liked the Feathered Star B&B very much. Room was spacious, comfortable, well-furnished with real antiques. Breakfast was a homemade coffee cake and very nice fruit salad, juice and coffee, with cereal available. Had great weather, picked beautiful cherries at Hy-Line, delicious dinner at CHOP on Saturday and lunch at The Cookery on Sunday, nice small hikes at Peninsula both days.

Taking a little mini-trip to Door County today to pick ripe cherries, eat at CHOP, and stay at a new-to-us B&B outside of Egg Harbor called the Feathered Star. We have passed it on the road many times but never checked it out. Their prices are reasonable so it may become a new resource. But first, walk to the Farmer's Market for pastries. It's nice that we can do Mass at our convenience by watching Fr. Tom online so we can just celebrate when we get home tomorrow.
Plenty of good pastries now, fresh eggs, brats, and fish. We go to the home of fresh veg and bring home proteins and carbs. But in our favor, we have more fresh veg than we can keep up with from our CSA.

Still getting used to trying to find the Blogger interface since they changed things. Makes me have to think at the very beginning of the morning! The weather is continuing beautiful. Wow, it's nice to have relief from high heat and humidity! I slept so much better last night! I feel more like myself again. Back to the gym today for Yogilates and Body Flow. Hopefully my somewhat wonky right knee will last.
Good thing I looked at the calendar, I would have gone to Yogilates and forgotten the ZOOM meeting I set up with the agent regarding Medicare supplement. I canceled both classes as I doubt I'd be done and able to get to the gym in time for Flow.

Oh, dear, a new Blogger interface to get used to. Hopefully I can figure it out. So far, so good.
Had a nice drive to Appleton to Costco yesterday so I could stock up on blackberries. We found lots of other things to buy as well, and were able to get some things for Michael and Taylor, too. I bought a chicken croissant sandwich box from the prepared food counter which we ate in the car so we wouldn't have to find a restaurant or drive-thru.
Enjoyed a portion of the Simply Folk sing-along streamed on my phone while playing Animal Crossing last night.

Slept about 15-20 min late this morning. Woke up in the wee hours with a lot of soreness in my knee so I got up and took ibuprofen. Once it kicked in, guess I slept more deeply again.
Hoping to drive to Appleton to Costco today as Aldi had no blackberries at all. I'll go into withdrawal if I have to rely on blueberries instead.

Had a very nice week up at the North Shore. Felt safer there than in Point. Nearly every business required masks and nearly everyone complied without obvious complaints. Coming through Minocqua was another story altogether. We stopped at Charlie's for ice cream on the drive back and were the only people, staff or customers, with masks. I heard some sotto voce comments and we got some "looks" for wearing our masks. We took our ice cream to the nearby boat landing and parked in the shade where we didn't have to be near the others while eating.
It was great to have cooler temperatures for a break in Grand Marais. Bob had to dig around to find the extra quilt for the bed the second night as we had been quite chilly the previous night. I slept with my wool socks on! The days were pretty comfortable in long sleeves/long pants with shorts weather on the last day. Grand Marais had been having a hotter than usual spell as well, so they were also relieved by the cooler weather. We had rain on Tuesday as predicted so we got Northport pasties and ate them in the room in the evening, but the other nights we were able to sit outside on patios. The last day was warmer, especially on the Gunflint Trail where we went for the day, and sitting on the patio outside the lodge was a perfect punctuation to the trip.

David himself was at the Farmer's Market this morning, so it was nice to chat with him. He said his wife is up at the North Shore now with some girlfriends, returning soon. I think something I ate last night at the Dane didn't agree with me as I felt a little uncomfortable for a bit before falling asleep. I also had some muscle cramping in the night which may or may not have been related, as well as some gas. Hopefully whatever it was has worked its way out of my system by now.
Two ZOOM meetings this morning, the Coalition at 8 am and Maria at 9 am to figure out Medicare options. I actually pre-washed the new sheets so they can be put on the bed today having been washed, something I usually never did.

My Fitbit had a seizure in the night, beeping steadily and no display at 5 am. I just took it off and set it aside til I got up, then went down and put it on the charger and pushed for a hard restart. Nothing appeared to happen but I left it on the charger. When I came down to breakfast after showering, it has a display again but charge is only at 30% after 45 min or more on the charger. I suspect it may have run completely out of charge, hence the beeps and lack of display in the night. Since I charge it every morning, and yesterday I left it on the charger until after gym by accident, there's no reason the charge should have been low.
Charge dissipated again completely during Body Pump, so headed to Target to buy a replacement. I'm now up to a Charge 4.

Sure was lovely to have a weekend with somewhat lower temperatures and humidity. We made good use of it by hiking at the Plover River Ice Age Trail on Saturday and at Roche-a-Cri on Sunday. It was great to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. Bugs were present, but not overly annoying except in a few spots. It was high summer at its nicest. One more week before we get to go up to the North Shore and enjoy lots of hiking. Temps up there appear to be highs in the upper 60s/low 70s, just about perfect for long hikes. Let's hope they stay that way for us.

Approaching mid-July already, more than halfway through 2020. Most people will be glad to see the backside of this year with its CO-VID, race riots, the election. Unfortunately, the passage of time in and of itself doesn't get rid of unpleasantness. We have to work at that.

Computer was weird this morning, the unit hot and had to turn it off and on to get it to come up. Hope there aren't problems. Weather still hot for an unconscionably long time now. Used the herbal rub on my lower back this morning and it seems to be helpful.
Made it through Body Pump and Yoga, though my back was considering skipping again today. Feel better for the effort.
It is a gorgeous day today! Temperatures are milder and it feels wonderful!

Was extremely pleased to see Marilyn in a drop-in visit at Bootstrap yesterday afternoon. Concerned about Kathy who didn't come because she wasn't feeling well, enough that she thought she might try to get tested for CO-VID. If she tests positive, I should probably get tested as well even though I last saw her a full week before. I believe she's the first person I know with whom I've had direct contact who has been even worried.

Trying a new class at the gym today, first day of Yogilates. I don't believe I've had the instructor, Karen, before. Hopefully I'll like it. It's back-to-back with Body Flow, so I'll be tired at the end even though neither class is cardio.

Had issues signing into Google to get to my blog, likely caused by the issues signing into Google yesterday to get the Nest app back on my phone. So frustrating to get kept from your own programs.
Had good fortune this morning when my Fitbit strap was on the verge of breaking and Bob remembered that there was a spare unused strap that had come with a former Fitbit in the drawer. He was able to replace the faulty part, even though this is a larger size, and now I can wear my Fitbit again.

It continues warm, but Bob opened up the house with the fan in the early morning to let in some fresh air before we need to close down again. I hope we can safely make the Madison trip today to pick up more berries at Costco and some Klarbrunn's and Seattle Cider at Woodman's, especially if another lockdown is possible soon. Spontaneously ordered the prime rib special from Michele's last night for dinner - yum!

A most quiet Independence Day, though indeed there are still folks who have purchased their own personal fireworks to make noise at night. No Riverfront Rendezvous, no municipal fireworks, no large gathering picnics. Indeed, with the increasing number of new cases, there may be another lockdown in the foreseeable future.

I'm now okay with having the A/C on all day while this hot streak continues. As long as I can have my window fan at night (and Bob turns the air off at that time). We're still running the small fan in the dining room even with the window closed just to keep the air moving.
Looking forward to some new thing on AC today including the ability to dive into the ocean to retrieve treasures there. Software closed down yesterday evening around 8 pm for updates so Bob only got a few minutes online yesterday. I've already had fun catching new fish and bugs since the first of the month; now there will be many more new things to explore. Good for the hot weather when it's too warm to do much outside during the day.

Hot weather continues. No walk with Kathy this morning as Charlie and MJ are bringing Ellie for her to babysit. I get my hair cut this afternoon, so I'll walk downtown then, so I don't need a complete walk this morning, but I'll try to get in quite a few steps so the rest of the day isn't obligatory.

Into the second half of 2020 already. The first half was certainly "interesting times". The second half looks to be more of the same for at least a significant portion, and then, who knows? I am glad to be retired and not as active a part of the "reconstruction" period ahead.

Ah, the return of heat and humidity (and the accompanying weight gain). Hard to stay very comfortable, even though the house hasn't gotten too bad yet with the fan. I suspect I'll give in to A/C if it continues to escalate this week. Had Pilates yesterday and Body Flow today. Usually means I don't get my steps for that hour so I blow the daily streak.

Went to the Necedah Wildlife Refuge yesterday; it was very nice but a bit buggy and the temperatures/humidity were higher than I had anticipated. Didn't have as much energy to walk as I had wished for. Chatted with Laura, and she was also low on energy yesterday. Must be the weather.

It's Father's Day, and I even remembered to give Bob his Versa. Since Taylor didn't get us pastries yesterday, I think I'll try to bake a White Gull Inn coffee cake and use Joanne K's peach jam for the filling. But it's a very nice day today, so if we can go hiking, that will take priority.

Going to St Brendan's this evening for a slightly "normal" evening out of town. Hopefully we can get a dinner table on the patio, and they will bring breakfast to the room. The Farmer's Market will be in place, with 10' separation between booths and limited access.
Going to see if I can gain full participation in the Zoom Coalition meeting today. I managed to access it on my phone yesterday with video, but didn't realize til I was leaving the meeting that I had to move to a different screen to unmute the mike so I could speak.

Michael is 29 today. I know he's grown up because for his birthday, he wanted to go to the dentist. Also, he got engaged a couple of weeks ago. He is definitely growing up.
Realized this morning that if I had chosen to wait til 65 to retire, I'd just be getting ready now. Also, we probably wouldn't have visited New Zealand as I wouldn't have taken a full month off, and who knows when/if the travel situation will be ripe to have a trip like that again.

Mostly sunny morning, still comfortably cool. Hiked at Hartman's Creek yesterday, followed with a prime rib sandwich on the deck at Wheelhouse. Gym classes are full up for most of the rest of the month. I could get into Body Pump on Tuesdays starting next week, but none of my other regular choices. Thanks to judicious applications of ibuprofen, I never did get as sore as expected after Friday's Body Pump, though I may not be out of the woods yet. I shall need to try to keep up better with strength training before the next time I'm able to get in. I should also check the app periodically in case someone has dropped out and freed up a spot.

Flag Day. Nice visit to Madison yesterday to spend time with Laura and see Kat as well. Did our Costco run and picked up food from La Brioche which we ate picnic-style on the back lawn at Laura's. Bob installed a new outlet in her dragon room for her Nintendo, I put in the new car seat covers in the car. Looks like lovely weather again today, so hopefully a hike is on the agenda.

Gonna do it; going to the gym for Body Pump this morning. Made the reservation last night so I'm prepared and psyched for class, even though it's been more than three months since I've done a class. I'll definitely use lighter weights and take it carefully, but I expect soreness in the next few days.
Oh, my. It's been a long time since the last Body Pump. Even with light weights, I struggled. I was the only one in class wearing a mask, which hid when I swore.

Still supposed to be warm today, then cooler in the later part of the week. Bob is willing to think about travel to the North Shore in mid-July, so I'll start looking at lodging options, probably at the cottages so we can cook/eat in if necessary. Might give the restaurants there time to settle into the new normal.

Today is our 36th wedding anniversary! And were my parents still living, it would have been their 75th! Bob isn't sure what year his folks were married, so we don't know which one it would have been for them. Looks to be a lovely sunny day, but oddly hot for one day only.

Last day of May looks sunny and nice. Many churches are opening their doors today for the faithful and fearless, not necessarily following CDC recommendations for group contact. Church is actually one of the worst dangers since so many people sit in place indoors and speak (and possibly sing) to increase likelihood of droplets entering the common airspace. I'm glad our church is choosing to wait and that Internet church is still available where we know we have no additional risk.

Had a great little getaway in Door County from Tues-Fri. Cherry blossoms were in full bloom for the first two sunny days, though they were damaged by the heavy rain on Thursday. We got some great hikes, seeing trilliums and tons of forget-me-nots in blue ponds throughout the forests of Peninsula State Park. Got plenty of hiking in each day at Peninsula and Newport with minimal contact with anyone else. The businesses in Door County seemed pretty universally careful with face masks, sanitizer, social distancing as the norm. Wilson's, site of an ice cream lunch post-Newport hike, even provided the small disposable face masks at the door station in case you didn't have one of your own. Their staff all wore custom-made Wilson's face masks that were fun and attractive. Even the troll statues (which have now been converted to leprechauns with a change in ownership from Trollhaugen to O'Malley's) were decked out with masks, and a bear sculpture for Edgewood Gallery sported a sheet-metal mask. I saw no negativity toward masks or people wearing them.

Tues 26 May
Today's the day! We're moving our "shelter at home" to "shelter in Door Co" for a few days. We'll stay at a well-cleaned unit at the Newport Resort, self-housekeeping and eating in the unit. We'll likely get a takeout pizza from Wild Tomato and a takeout dinner from CHOP and an unknown third takeout for the other evening. We're going to try to get some good hiking (and hopefully trillium-viewing, maybe even cherry blossoms!) Got to scout out whether bathrooms are open in State Park campgrounds and text Sue W so she can plan her camping excursions. Might text Fr. Tom a picture if cherry blossoms are open.
Food:
8:10 am Chocolate caramel pinwheel, 101 g blackberries, coffee

Memorial Day! Sunny and warm, beginning to be humid. I picked up several ticks on the hike at Steinhaugen yesterday and a passel of mosquito bites, mostly on the back of my left thigh. I sprayed with bug dope, but didn't spray over my clothes and they bit right through the leggings. Lesson learned.
Looks like thunderstorms now, mostly to the north of us on this round but possibly more to come. Probably means no hike today.

Memorial Day weekend. A little grey outside again, but not currently raining (though it did last night). Online Mass again for us, though the Lutherans have opened their doors again this morning. I'm glad our church is choosing to be safe, though they will reopen the doors on a limited basis next weekend by direction of the bishop. If they will continue to stream the Mass, we will likely continue that venue as long as we can.
